Hello,
What should I do with work units? I have work units with deadline in June. Cancel or not?
Best regards

Michael

Message 2041416 - Posted: 29 Mar 2020, 21:59:46 UTC

THE END IS NEAR...

Just pulled up BOINC to find that my very last CUDA work unit is currently zipping through my GTX 1060 card. After that I have only 82 CPU based units to crunch. (Though who knows maybe a few more will be sent over the next couple of days?) Sad to see it all come to a halt / pause after just shy of 21 years. Hopefully someone will step in and find some other way for us to crunch SETI data.

Either that or maybe they're clearing out everything so we can focus on just a few particular frequencies originating from one particular star... with a new project called DECODE@HOME? I can wish, can't I????

A huge THANK YOU to my fellow crunchers that have donated an incredible amount of computer resources over the years. I do believe we all deserve a big virtual pat on the back.

I have been trying to do as many units as possible before hibernation. Thank you for allowing us to assist with this project.

I'm trying to get to 7M credit (at 6.9M now). Useless in the overall scheme of things but I like arbitrary targets!

Loyal SETI@HOME cruncher since the late 90's
I already have prepped for your hibernation and pre switched to Rosetta@home for COVID-19 Research
When you run dry they will get 100% of my CPU time !
I'll watch for you to send out next data batch.

It looks like he has a couple of mainstream boxes. 1 with 4 cores/threads and the gtx 1060 and a Laptop.
His gtx 1060 system is doing a very respectable windows RAC of 22,000+

As Major Hoople would so eloquently put it:

Fap!

(If you don't remember Major Hoople, then you weren't really there.)

Just let them complete...and then the project will be finished as much it can be...and you never know that one of those final remaining tasks could have a signal from ET in there :-)

I understand your reasoning, but I've been participating with SETI @ Home since I got my first Mac 5200 back in 1993. (Or was it '94? I don't even remember now.) The screen saver was a comforting old friend over the years. I may be personifying SETI @ Home too much, but I'm going to really miss it. It was the first program of it's sort that I ever ran.
R.I.P. SETI @ Home.
Later 'taters.

The first screensaver ("Classic" S@H came out in 1999 I believe. I remember seeing it running for the first time back then and I was very intrigued and have been running it ever since (on and off, as other projects have also needed some of my computer cycles).

I can't believe the ride is almost over! It will be interesting to see what the results of the last 20 years of work show. I wonder how long it will take them work through all of this data though?! All of our computers, the last 20 years, now it is just on them.....it makes you wonder if it will be another decade before we hear of any results.

I will be moving over to Folding@home when the last work units are issued to help with the Covid-19 crisis. After that is past I will go back to the astro fields.

I never frequented these forums much, pretty much only when I had a problem...but the others have always been very kind and helpful and I wish everyone well!

If my reading of the "Nebula" forum is correct each data analysis run doesn't take more than a couple days to ship the data and then run the processing.

The slow down is when organic human brains try to figure out another method to try to extract information from the noise when the last one wasn't quite good enough.

My impression is they are not actually shipping the entire 20 years worth of data for the "tests".

So step 1 is reach the point where they think it is reasonable to run the analysis against the entire 20 years of data.
Step 2 do so.
Step 3 write up the results.

I think Step 1 is going to be the hold up because it takes a while to come up with new/better/different ideas on how to extract information from the noise.
I think that if they are doing nothing but trying get the information/data out for the next several months they will have the time to make more progress faster.

My 2cents.
