What SETI could do, is write programs that can comb through the data available,in search for other signs of (non intelligent) life.

By the way.... Has anyone checked to see if the dolphins are still here?
I've been with SETI@Home since '99, will continue (or my computers will) crunch numbers for other projects.
What a long strange trip it's been. Looking forward to what comes next.
Thanks,
Paul M.

You need to follow the "Nebula" thread (https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_forum.php?id=1511) as that is where you will be able to see (for now) the concept of how the next phase of the analysis is being planned and how the initial work is proceeding (slowly).

SETI@Home is not about communicating with the little green men, but saying "Based on our observations there may be a little green man in that region of the sky". Where region is quite a small area, with any source many light years away.

Hi,
I am sorry to hear this .
I am member since May 1999, so I think I can say I went with you all the way .
It was fun and joy . I feel I did something useful all this time.
Even when I was digging in employers computer and admins questioning why I spend so much CPU time on some strange tasks :-)

It was an experiment and if successful it had changed the world .
But even with not "finding them" I feel we tried at least .
Not trying would have been a failure but we did not fail ,we tried and that counts.

Thanks for your enthusiasm and thanks for getting the project started and running for all these years.
20+ years we had never meet in person but we exchanged data all the time :-)

Good Luck and whenever someone restarts the effort, we can tell him where "they" are not to find!

Regards from Arizona (was Texas, was Switzerland, was Germany .... long time ago, darn )

Wolfgang

It must be seen as an important event, it has made The New York Times.
The Search for E.T. Goes on Hold, for Now
A popular screen saver takes a break while its inventors try to digest data that may yet be hiding news of extraterrestrials.

One of the great science fiction fantasies of all time — that you might discover aliens texting you from outer space on your computer — is about to take a breather.

For the last 21 years ordinary people, armchair astronomers, citizen scientists, sitting at home or in their offices, were able to participate in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence — SETI — thanks to a screen saver called seti@home. Once installed, the program would periodically download data from the University of California, Berkeley, process it while the computer was idle, and then send it back.

On March 2, the ringleaders of the seti@home effort, a beleaguered and somewhat diminished band of Berkeley astronomers, announced on their website that they were taking a break. On March 31 the program will stop sending out data and go into “hibernation.” The team, they explained, needs time to digest its decades of findings.

The suspension of new data mining removes yet another pleasant diversion that some of us — there were about 100,000 seti@home members at last count — could pursue during our social distancing prompted by the coronavirus pandemic.

Just a proposal:

Why S@H don't make it's part on the Covid-19 crises and delay the end of new work for a couple of months, until the crises stops, that could help us to stay at home passing the quarantines.

Awesome post!

Love the way you put it:
"...overclocked to the point all the blue smoke came out of'em."
-and-
"Bless this project and all the over clocking fun it brought to the masses."

Reading this made my day... THANKS!

Would someone be able to clarify if they have or have not been analyzing anyone of the WUs that we've been crunching? If they haven't been analyzing any of the data why weren't they?

I am totally amazed at the number of crunchers who have been attached to S@H for close to 20 years and have just now made a first post. I am not criticizing, we all participate in our own way. There are many more who have made just a 2nd , 3rd , .. 5th post. There will be manty many more of course who will chose to not verbalize (the silent majority). Many of course will never have looked at this forum yet they continued to contribute year after year.

Just an observance I wanted to make. not a judgement or criticism. Thank you all for being part of the Seti family. It has been an interesting 20 plus years and maybe, just maybe we will be called back to start anew. Without trial there can be no error. without error one will never know it was being done incorrectly. Even if we don't find ET hoefully we will have learned how to better search..

Live Long and prosper. Stay safe and adjust to the new realities of the world.
Bob

As my Profile states. Despite my reservations regarding this succeeding in finding intelligent life:

"I love this attempt"

But for real, nobody evens knows if that is true. Since the data was never analyzed.
We could even has found several ET's communications or not a single one. Who knows?

I will be running the program full force depending on the temperature on all my computers till the bitter end except for when I'm playing "The Division" which seems pretty appropriate for todays current events.

In many ways, this is very exciting news. All sorts of intriguing stuff could emerge... Or, um... quite a lot of not... But whatever the outcome, I will always feel immense pride to have been part of the search. Thank you :)

Started House Dorrycott in 1999, 21 years now. Three accounts, eleven computers, five OS's and the end comes. Say, weren't we guaranteed a starship when this ended?
