Message 2039586 - Posted: 22 Mar 2020, 2:17:37 UTC - in response to Message 2039205.

I have seen it written in several places that new work units will no longer be available after 31 March 2020, but what about the unfinished work units that are still on our computers after that date? Will they still be collected?

Thanks

My impression is they will stop giving out tasks no later than 31 March. But will continue to receive results for weeks/months.

Sad to see the hibernation, but there is an urgent need now to "solve" the Chinese Disease COVID-19 problem.

I'm switching to Rosetta@Home to process protein folding/modeling.

SETI lost my previous data and accounts; I had joined early 1999 and ran the SETI project on all available workstation hardware and the servers at a 5000+ employee organization. Wish I had those numbers!

Best to all!

Craig

I am going to mostly do Rosetta as well near term.... I am not sure why it is so unpopular....

On Science United Dave Anderson says that he will give more priority to Rosetta@home tasks. But I am getting mostly Milkyway@home tasks.

That is one of the problems with SU, you can't effectively control what your host will do.
Yes you can select projects, but you not control the mix you are going to receive.
If you wish to run Rosetta do by the old way, better attach your host directly to there.

I suspect that most of us realize that the careful analysis of results to date and SENSITIVITY should be done, definitively if possible. As a next step, a review of BOINC and SETI processing structure (system analysis), laying out improvements with costs, etc, also makes sense. After making needed system improvements, SETI should start up again, if this whole approach to finding a technological civilization stands scrutiny. Our little (big?) brothers are out there. Let's find them. I will be making contributions to SETI to help pay for it.

Just seen the news. Been busy with the end of the World as we know it, etc.
Very sad, but we have to move on. Been a member since Aug 99.
Had SETI on so many PC's I've lost count.
I'll sign up for another project in April.
Keep up the good work guys.

Thanks for all you have done across the generations.
A member for over 20 years using every computer I've had access to in that time.
A little disappointed we have not yet made contact but, hopeful that we will, in time, get there.
Live long and prosper!

Same here. My first computer running SETI was a IBM compatible with an 8088 processor.
Now look at what is out there. 8 core screamers!!!!!

take care

What SETI could do, is write programs that can comb through the data available,in search for other signs of (non intelligent) life.

By the way.... Has anyone checked to see if the dolphins are still here?
I've been with SETI@Home since '99, will continue (or my computers will) crunch numbers for other projects.
What a long strange trip it's been. Looking forward to what comes next.
Thanks,
Paul M.

You need to follow the "Nebula" thread (https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_forum.php?id=1511) as that is where you will be able to see (for now) the concept of how the next phase of the analysis is being planned and how the initial work is proceeding (slowly).

SETI@Home is not about communicating with the little green men, but saying "Based on our observations there may be a little green man in that region of the sky". Where region is quite a small area, with any source many light years away.

Hi,
I am sorry to hear this .
I am member since May 1999, so I think I can say I went with you all the way .
It was fun and joy . I feel I did something useful all this time.
Even when I was digging in employers computer and admins questioning why I spend so much CPU time on some strange tasks :-)

It was an experiment and if successful it had changed the world .
But even with not "finding them" I feel we tried at least .
Not trying would have been a failure but we did not fail ,we tried and that counts.

Thanks for your enthusiasm and thanks for getting the project started and running for all these years.
20+ years we had never meet in person but we exchanged data all the time :-)

Good Luck and whenever someone restarts the effort, we can tell him where "they" are not to find!

Regards from Arizona (was Texas, was Switzerland, was Germany .... long time ago, darn )

Wolfgang

It must be seen as an important event, it has made The New York Times.
The Search for E.T. Goes on Hold, for Now
A popular screen saver takes a break while its inventors try to digest data that may yet be hiding news of extraterrestrials.

One of the great science fiction fantasies of all time — that you might discover aliens texting you from outer space on your computer — is about to take a breather.

For the last 21 years ordinary people, armchair astronomers, citizen scientists, sitting at home or in their offices, were able to participate in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence — SETI — thanks to a screen saver called seti@home. Once installed, the program would periodically download data from the University of California, Berkeley, process it while the computer was idle, and then send it back.

On March 2, the ringleaders of the seti@home effort, a beleaguered and somewhat diminished band of Berkeley astronomers, announced on their website that they were taking a break. On March 31 the program will stop sending out data and go into “hibernation.” The team, they explained, needs time to digest its decades of findings.

The suspension of new data mining removes yet another pleasant diversion that some of us — there were about 100,000 seti@home members at last count — could pursue during our social distancing prompted by the coronavirus pandemic.

Just a proposal:

Why S@H don't make it's part on the Covid-19 crises and delay the end of new work for a couple of months, until the crises stops, that could help us to stay at home passing the quarantines.

Awesome post!

Love the way you put it:
"...overclocked to the point all the blue smoke came out of'em."
-and-
"Bless this project and all the over clocking fun it brought to the masses."

Reading this made my day... THANKS!
