BTW: Wouldn't in make sense (besides of the fact that some people & ressources are needed for maintenence :) to keep Astropulse alive ?

Because the volume is massively lower, maybe it wouldn't be as big a headache as MB is.

So does this mean there will also be no more BOINC updates?

If there will be, where do we go to get them? I've always your website..........

I built 3 rigs just for crunching SETI@home, the last of which was completed right after Christmas and puts out about 200k credits worth of work every day. This really does bum me out. I figured the work had to change at some point, I just didn't guess it was going to stop altogether. Although I signed up in 2010 (it was run on the family computer starting in 99), I only very recently decided to get back into crunching and wasn't privy to the writing on the wall from two years ago. It's a shame, I made it to 25th in RAC in a short period of time. I was ready to do work. The other space projects are magnitudes less inspiring than SETI, and I'm really going to have to think about whether I care enough to buy the electricity. It's that, or just wait and hope for something similar or SETI-related to pop up and shutter the "SETI Lab" for now.

Sad.

You can download a BOINC Manager from multiple locations, not just Seti@Home. Remember Seti@Home and BOINC are two different projects. BOINC is not going to stop "processing" :)

Message 2036818 - Posted: 8 Mar 2020, 21:29:11 UTC - in response to Message 2036731.

Question about how BOINC works: If you set projects with a resource share of zero, does it ignore them until you enter a higher number even if it'll end up idle or does it first look at any with a higher share but if there's no work from those it asks for work from zero-share ones too?

The way I've seen it work here is that it will not request tasks for a "0" project until the moment it runs out of work from non-zero projects. Normally, it will then request only a few tasks, perhaps even just 1, for the device (GPU or CPU) requiring work.
This is not universal, though, in that in some cases, on some machines, it will "flood" the machine with work rather than 1's and 2's. Personally, I have only seen this on Einstein project, and there may be other factors involved related to how much work your client requests.. Einstein's servers have been tweaked and act oddly, and are well-know for sending more work than expected for whatever reason.
Since the rewrite of the client scheduler in 7.16.x things got a bit weird as well. 7.14 was pretty well-behaved, in my experience.

Thank you for the opportunity to participate in SETI activities. I may not sign up for other projects because no one has inspired me as much as Carl. My focus is on the youth of the US. I want them to be as enthused as I about our Space Program. If you ever generate a youth program (pre-k through undergrad) that provides activities, scholarships and high school through undergrad internships, please contact me. I am retired and I would love to use my time sharing my love of the cosmos. Thank you, Danke, merci beaucoup, molte grazie, muito obrigado/muita obrigada, and muchas gracias SETI deserves all of this and more.

Sniff
A 20 year relationship is now a days a rarity. I will fondly remember the friendships this project made possible. A few of you I was able to meet in person. Packing half my suitcase with anni-shirts will be missed on my travels.

Good luck those of you @SETI! I hope that in your research there are some more WOW moments! I personally have enjoyed all the time that was permitted to me to be able to participate in such a great undertaking. As others have said such a wild ride! I too look forward to the day when SETI comes out of hibernation with something new and until that day comes, there are other project ventures that need computing power so of course I will be contributing. I was kind of hoping to hit a few more milestones myself before the inevitable conclusion but alas, life! Eh

Good tidings to all of you and thanks!

Sincerely,

Antony

Knowing Life Exists using a 'Listening ' 'Program' is so important, We would have a 'Listening' Post on Far Side of Moon.

If We Don't have one, then 'Listening' is Not Important.

Cost would be UNIMPORTANT since So Many Highly Educated have said......well, you know what they have said.

Yet NO ACTION relative to 'Importance'.

Oh Well, Time to spend another Couple Trillion on War and taking care of migrants or fighting 'them' off.

Yep WOW

May we All have a METAMORPHOSIS. REASON. GOoD JUDGEMENT and LOVE and ORDER!!!!!

I would like to remind everyone of an email we all got dated December 27, 2019. I would like to hear the comments from administration.

Here are some excerpts from said email. Mind you, this is less than 3 months ago.

From Jeff Cobb...

"Our program of searching for intelligent extraterrestrial life continues to expand"

"We are putting the finishing touches on our Nebula software suite which will analyze all results from both SETI@home and SERENDIP IV. This work will result in two major papers."

"This year saw the further commissioning and improving of SERENDIP VI / FASTBurst"

"We continue to obtain raw data from Berkeley's Breakthrough Listen program"

"From Green Bank, we will be getting data from observations of galaxies and targets selected by the...TESS program."

"Parkes will soon be conducting a survey plane of our own Milky Way galaxy and we will be distributing those data as well."

"Please spread the word about SETI@home and encourage people to participate."

"Second, SETI@home needs the funding to obtain the hardware and develop the software required to handle new data sources."

"I'm hoping that you will give generously to our efforts."

Ok.

So. We have a few possibilities. None are promising.
First, we were all erroneously lied to in this email, and this was a cash grab and those who donated, LAWYER UP TIME BABY!
If the email was, in fact, truthful, then SOMETHING HAS CHANGED AND WE'RE NOT BEING TOLD WHAT.
I fail to identify a 3rd possibility. Perhaps the community might shake it's tendency to have the attention span of a goldfish, remember things like this email THESE PEOPLE SENT, and HOLD THEM TO TASK.

Anyone?

Don't hold your breath. Much as I love this project, and have personally invested thousands in it, communication from project staff to the volunteers has always been horrendous.

I think the simplest explanation is that highly skilled and educated scientists got sick of playing IT support and trying to keep a crumbling infrastructure running when they could be doing "real science" instead. For the past two years it seemed to me that the enthusiasm just wasn't there any more. While I'm sure there are good reasons, I'm personally pretty hacked off at how this has been handled. But, as noted above, effective communication to us "peons" has never been part of the S@H skill-set for the 7 years I've been here.

Hi Jim,

I believe you hit the nail directly on the head! Look at the condition SETI has been in for the past several months. I believe you are correct in your assessment.

Have a great day! :)

Hello

And Breakthrough Listen ?
https://breakthroughinitiatives.org/

Is there any infrastructure that would allow us to process/do research? They have released "raw data" but I probably lack the technical competence to create some to do any data cleanup and/or analysis.

When I'm out of Seti wu's, I'll be running Milkyway and Einstein. At least the forums will be here.

Guess I'll be devoting my Linux machine to the Einstein@home folks when its Seti tasks are done .

See you guys there ... hey they have a wordlink thread there too!
I'm putting myself to the fullest possible use, which is all, I think, that any conscious entity can ever hope to do.

If the 'volunteer' section is closing on 31st march, then why is my PC still downloading data to be processed, that has a 'early May' deadline ?
