Message 2036301 - Posted: 6 Mar 2020, 18:00:44 UTC - in response to Message 2035163.

That is not good news.
I have been processing Work units for over 20 years.
All this time, I though the results I were sending back were being analyzed.
Are you saying you've just been collecting for 20 years, decided you have more than enough data and just now are going to start analysis?
I hope that is not the case.

So can you not distribute the analysis?
I am more than sad and disappointed, I am pissed at this news.

It can't be distributed practically as it needs the entire data set simultaneously to work on. What could have instead happened was having the analysis run while we're still sending and receiving work as usual, but neither the money was there, nor, I am becoming increasingly convinced, the interest to find it and keep the project going as it has. Only time will tell, by how long it takes for the hibernation to end.

Wow! Good-Bye old friend. I sure hope we'll met up again in the not too distant future.
I'm only sorry I didn't get to find some alien communication and win that cash prize you
were offering back in 1999 when you first started this. But, then again, all the data hasn't
been analyzed. So, who knows? I may yet be a winner. We shall see.
Sincerely,

Oh man,

There isn't many things I've been involved for over 20 years. But maybe it is finally time to let my computers rest during nighttime.

Must get used to silence... Still hope you'll find something some day.

Hola, Juan!
Shakespeare covered it... "How like an angel in apprehension and how like a devil in evil deeds." Somehow, we must learn better how to bring out our "better angels." Steven Pinker has a lot of statistics showing that things are getting better (see YouTube), but day to day we don't see it.
Best Regards,
Rich

Message 2036347 - Posted: 6 Mar 2020, 21:41:31 UTC - in response to Message 2035163.

Can I ask some probably stupid, but mostly harmless, questions?

Was (is?) a particular part of the 'sky' being scanned/sampled, or the entire span of the universe?
How much of the targeted area has now been scanned?
How much of this scanned data has been analysed so far?

And, probably most stupid question of all, what is the purpose of the SETI@Home data analysis and the 'back-end' analysis mentioned (or how do these differ)?

Take care all

M

The main region of the sky covered by SETI@Home was a belt north of the equator, with targeted data from a fair number of stars with exoplanets being added later.

The work we were doing was sifting through the mountains of data sorting possible significant signals (billions of them!), which are only now being collated to see if any are present over time (that's the first step of the "back-end" job). Once the list of possibles has been reduced to a more manageable size it is probable there will be some more targeted data collection.

I started with BOINC and SETI@Home near the beginning. Glad to see that all the data that was crunched is going to be used. I will keep the project open on my systems in the hopes of some future announcement for further analysis.

I too remember when the work units crunched on single processors to get done in days. Now am running a water cooled 12-way desktop with more power than the IBM mainframes we sold for millions of dollars. No wonder tech companies struggle to stay ahead of being irrelevant and obsolete.

Best wishes for the next Phase of the Project.

In this World of Billionaires, Millionaires, and others extremely Well Off(Ones Professing How Science Science Science is dA BE ALL and END ALL and Will Enthusiascally CONtribute) - and they CANNOT be convinced to Pony Up a Bunch of Dough for a Project, Hailed Ad Nauseam as a World History Changer, then there MUST NOT BE a CONvincing Argument to do so.

20+ Years to CONvince. And What? It has NEVER ADDED UP.

I Believe it ALL was a way to Create Part-Time Work for a few UCB Profs. It is always nice to have a very Well Paying Part-time Job.

World is FLUSH with CASH to Donate and Is Donated. But Here is a Project Constantly Portrayed as Humanities Greatest Discovery - once Discovered - and NOTHING.

Time to Sleep says S&H. 'cept Unlike a Bear. NOT WELL FED and HAPPY. Or are they?

Yep

May we All have a METAMORPHOSIS. REASON. GOoD JUDGEMENT and LOVE and ORDER!!!!!

Being participating for 21 years, this is by far the longest project I have done in my life, and probably will be in rest of my life. I am so sad to hear it is closing. It's been my pleasure to be able to contribute to the project, together with you all.

Hey, here is an idea. Almost since the dawn of the project the biggest standing joke has been the infamous Seti toaster that nobody ever got. What if some enterprising person or Group produced a stick-on label saying "Official Seti Toaster" or similar and flogged them tor say $2 each.

We get what we always wanted, Seti gets a farewell boost to their coffers to pay for keeping the boards up and going. If nothing else a bit of fun to lift the descending doom & gloom.

+1
That could be a pretty cool refrigerator/PC case magnet ...

Yes a sad day, but it was always going to be a hard road. Especially with the lack of funding.
I would like to thank everyone involved and to all those that worked tirelessly for SETI@home...
