I will miss the flicker of the lonely screen keeping the cats company in the darkness. No more will I have the comfort of a little light in the great cosmos of the study when I get up at 3AM. to take a pee. Is there nothing more? Could be a party somewhere, maybe a restaurant at the end. YES! 42

It was sad to read the news that the crunching has to come to an end, there was so much to look forward to in the future with Parkes data etc.

Beat wishes for the analysis side, hopefully the hibernation is not too deep and crunching can start again in the future.

Is it strange to say that this is simultaneously shocking and unsurprising?
Any computer I used since the original SETI@home client was updated to handle proxy connections (v. 1.06 I believe it was?), since I was on one at the time, crunched for S@h constantly ever since, with just a few quick dashes to Climateprediction.net, World Community Grid - Clean Energy Project Phase 2, and MilkyWay@home when S@h couldn't generate work for a longer amount of time. Always a single computer and just doing CPU work (also BOINC installed as a service, so I gather it couldn't even do GPU work, but I specifically disable it anyway, that'd use too much power, and this one just has integrated graphics too), so I don't go through a batch of WUs too fast, can take myself over shorter-duration problems.
What I'm trying to say is that, yes, I did... Not sure if expect, but definitely hoped for it to go on pretty much forever... for reasons that likely have little to do with the stated purpose of the project and much with personal matters, mental links, and the fact that I'm extremely hard to budge, so good luck getting me to start something, but if I do then it's next to impossible to get me to stop. So, yes, felt quite committed to SETI@home, and did search for other projects to split the computing time with a few times but couldn't find anything that "spoke" to my like that. Maybe there was that Clean Energy Project, but WCG is... different, that puts me off, that project wasn't something to reliably send enough work long-term, and also used way more resources and could add significant wear to HDD.
Returning to why it's shocking, with Breakthrough Listen and talks of other telescopes sending data, and a long-term drop in the number of volunteers (or at least so I think?), it seemed like there there would be ever more work to send out. And just recently increasing the WU limits seemed to indicate something like that.
But it's unsurprising mainly because of these recent database problems. Then again, the entire SETI project always seemed to be on borrowed time, always starved of funds, in recent years more and more of manpower as well, it's been hanging on by a thread for decades... Yet it always seemed to manage to hang on, and SETI@home seemed to be something it focused on. But from the moment I first read about Nebula I worried about that, that S@h will no longer be the focus, no longer even be seen as important really, and resources will switch to that. And I guess these recent problems made some decisions easy (relatively speaking).

Sorry, probably ranting... Again, I shouldn't be surprised, but I find myself quite in shock since the notification first popped up.

In the end... Thank you for these nearly 21 years. It meant... a whole lot more than "donating" computer time or searching for alien signals or any other actual science goal, stated or not.

But SETI@home did lead to BOINC and many of the other distributed computing projects... So, joining the others who've been asking in this thread: What do you recommend to switch to?
An environmental project would be my top preference, but I'm seeing few, if any, of those. Astronomy is second. Highly doubt I'd touch anything else. And definitely safe, bug-free, and low resource use. Looking for something I can still stick to CPU only and with a similarly low amount of RAM use and disk writing. Computer's weak and old and want to be able to continue using it in this manner, crunching continuously even while I'm using it.
And in case you haven't noticed, I much prefer to commit to one thing, so definitely looking for one project that will be able to provide constant WUs on its own for the foreseeable future.
Any ideas?

Wow. Nearly 21 full years of SETI computing for me. Hard to believe it's ending.

Well.... As a newcomer and living on disablilty I have spent every available extra $$$ on PS, ram, ssd, cpu liquid cooling and GPU updates for an older i5 machine. I just ordered a cpu liquid cooler for my new 2 year old i7 machine, cooler due here Friday. I came in late for the game and am dissapointed that I didn't get to participate more than a few months but also very happy that the data will now get analized. I did not know that was not happening. Hopefully my contribution, however small will have some use for the cause.

Seti@home was my first passion but I think I will look into Rosetta for my updated hardware to process. I wish I could have contributed monetarily as well but all I could afford was the additional hardware as my donation.

I think with the current world issues Rosetta would benefiet humanity the most at this point.

Thanks for ride however short and best wishes to all.

Well that's bittersweet! I have been running other projects so I guess they get more CPU/GPU time.

I will miss crunching WUs, too. But I'm also curious about what Nebula will deliver as results.

Thanks to the Berkeley Team for hosting this unique project!

I've been crunching SETI since Oct'99 (on & off), sad to see SETI@H go, but I hope they find something amongst the analysed results & then have an area of a specific star system to focus on with new data to crunch! :)

Alas ... that's a bit depressing.

I'm into SETI@home since 17 Oct 2002, and all my PCs ever since had constant full load whenever running. That accumulated 9,910,636 credits up to this very moment (SETI@home only ! More to find on other projects ...). BTW: BOINC was even on my smartphones, crunching all thru the nights while charging ...

Probably worn out 2 NVIDIA GTX 570's on it, and finally got a RTX 2808 super in order to wield a really big alien searchlight ...

I hope the follow up analysis would show up many a things interesting.

And I hope the final weeks would get me the chance to pass the 10 million credit milestone ;-)

Let them astronomers find new tasks for SETI@home ... I'd let the project connected and stay tuned. And I hope the final paper(s) would be open access (I'd rate any paywall in front of the results as real annoyance, pals). Maybe there's more SETI search in the future, which could utilize the infrastructure, too ?

So have a nice rest, SETI@home ...

Very sad day. 2 of my 3 computers cannot get new tasks.

Ah not just me then, it just took them a little while to pick up new tasks.

It will be certainly be interesting to see the paper(s) you submit to the scientific journals summarizing the results of your data analysis. May those results be all we hope and pray for! As Spock would say, "Logic dictates that there is a bunch of them out there!"
The search must go on!!

Seti is by my knowledge the biggest distributed computing endeavor undertaken. The sheer size and scope of people involved who donate their systems via time and constant investment in unfathomable. I can only surmise that this level of computation on such a grand scale would be in the millions if not billions of dollars to recreate in a closed environment. Wielding this type of power is most impressive. Most scientific communities would sell their right arm for such a system & user base. It completely perplexes me that a higher education institution would squander such a resource. Collectively as a userbase we have no equal. There are people from all walks of life and abilities that are more than willing to contribute. We have the knowledge, power, and finances as a whole to make this happen. Why was there never an olive branch extended for the community to get more involved and help? Yes some helped with purchases of equipment and probably some with some fruitful insight, but never really has there been any large push to say “Hey were struggling over here. Can maybe some of you guys help us with code and db management?” No all we are met with is a short blurb about how they are going to “go over the data” and write a “research paper”. This news literally makes me ill.

I've been participating since 17 Jun 1999.

Total credit 866,572
Recent average credit 776.44
SETI@home classic workunits 136
SETI@home classic CPU time 9,796 hours

Where am I going to find a screensaver this cool ... and scientifically plausible?

It's been great guys (no gender implied)!!!!

I loaded Rosetta but SETI@HOME still keeps running. I've suspended them, however, when resuming Rosetta the SETI@HOME starts again. How do I stop SETI@HOME? I was going to let the SETI finish.
Thank you for you help.

Set No New Tasks for SETI@home and finish what you have of them or abort them, but do not leave those in limbo.

Cheers.

RIP SETI@home -  probably replaced by a more efficient AI for future data collection that can eliminate all natural sources of all signal energy out there.
