Well I am disappointed. This feels very much like the team is giving up because of the recent database issues. There are plenty of cures out there, but the team is out of energy, out of drive to continue.

Perhaps its time to re-think the design of Boinc to make it vastly easier to manage. Create a ‘self-healing’ Boinc that will operate with very little oversight. I’m sure some volunteer coders could step up to the plate and help with that.

Alternately - why not open up the full Seti@home code to public so others could take the project and create a new start?

Here is a conspiracy theory. Has the starlink project and its expected interference on radio astronomy been a factor in the decision to shelf this project?

Very sad day. 2 of my 3 computers cannot get new tasks.

It has been a good run.

Well folks buckle up, it's time for a last ride!
I'm glad to have been part of this awesome project since... 3 April 1999!
Catch you all on some other noble project!

wow ... I'm sad. Started in April 2003 with one computer, kept buying computers and gpus, ended up with 12, 100% dedicated to SETI. My house was warm in the winter. I'm at 86.2 million credits, I was hoping to reach 100 million -- not gonna happen. Now, systems are quiet. Oh well ... thank you for all the Research.

Geeze, such drama when the crunching part of the project comes to its natural conclusion.
It's been going on for 20+ years, did anyone expect crunching to continue forever?
This is what was expected from the beginning, so why all the drama?

Not forever but as long as we find an alien signal so yes basicly forever 😂

well, it wont happen right away, but they will be able to allocate more resources to that task. hopefully get started on that second stage analysis sooner.

The very unfortunate aspect is that rather than running concurrently and continuously that the project needs to be taken down for months or years (if not forever) to do this analysis. As Dr. Korpela noted, if the donation level had been higher ($1 million annually or greater) then Nebula could have been built to work in this concurrent manner. Considering that there are 80K active participants currently, that works out to only $12 annually each.

I tried, but my investments are in the toilet right now with the worldwide trade wars and disease-fuelled recession, and the personal and workplace lottery pools resulted in as much luck and long-term results as anything else I've attempted. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Anyone have Jeff Bezos' phone number handy?

SETI is a search for our meaning and our place in the cosmos, It's a question that has been longing for an answer since the first humans looked upwards to the night sky and wondered if they were alone. It's as deeply emotional as it is scientific. This project not only allowed us to try to answer it, but actually to directly participate in finding this answer, to whatever degree we chose. There is nothing that will ever quite replace it.

The saddest part of this is to read the farewell posts of volunteers who have contributing since the beginning and have never posted before or only a very few times. For twenty years they silently and uncomplainingly kept this project, and hope itself, going, and now they have nothing more they care about to contribute to.

I hope that you can have some empathy for them.

April 3rd 1999 user here. Sad to see it stop, but hopeful it will come back. Even more hopeful that maybe there is a result somewhere in there!!!

I've been 'searching' for 20 years. Never thought we'd find much if anything but we shouldn't stop. If anything we should increase our efforts.

Probably would be better to have Yuri Milner's number. We know for sure he would donate money to the cause. Oh well......

I started way back on 27 May 1999 under another name
I will be sorry my CPU has no SETI work to crunch
but will now help Rosetta@home.

Until such time SETI calls us to action again...

Very sad, especially when I was about to release a new version of BoincSpy ( last release was in 2014 ). Its still useful for other projects but was focused on seti@home.

Hope that those other UC Berkeley astronomers will get on board soon :).

In the mean time. I will be switching to the following projects after March 31st.

distributed.net
Einstein@home
World Community Grid.

Its been a blast...

Thank you to the team and everyone who contributed!
Please, keep us in the loop.

I will miss crunching!!!

Hopefully we will find a definite answer to the question "are we alone" in our lifetime...

All the best!

I have to wonder....the people who have been crunching here....when this finally ends....will they move over to different projects or just drop out completely? I am looking at other projects now but I do not have the same passion or desire for them as I do seti. I am curious what % of users will just say farewell and remove the program. We all knew this day would come, but it was very sudden, not much lead up warning...at least that I knew about.

I started in February of 2000, and continued off and on throughout these past 20 years, even getting kicked off of SETI@home once for cussing a poster in the forums, lol. It saddens me because I felt a part of something great, though I do know that it still *is* something great and hope all the knowledge that is found in all these years of collection are as valuable as we'd like it to be.

Now I'll have to try to find something I can feel as strongly about to 'help' in my tiny way, but I'll keep my SETI@home 'running' just in case it comes out of 'hibernation' for one reason or another and will just automatically get WU's, heh.

Thank you SETI staff and scientists for your devotion and for letting us help with such a huge project!
