If they do that, I hope they give us enough notice to switch to backup projects, and flush through all cached tasks before the outage starts - so we don't start filling the new database with crud as soon as it comes back online. . . Does this mean you will have to change your nick to the Smug Swede? Since you should no longer be grumpy. There will be much rending of clothes and gnashing of teeth now. And the local pubs will do a roaring trade .... Stephen the Sad :( |

Since seti@home is shutting down at the end of March the points raised in this thread is moot. . . Very sadly, very true ... Stephen :( |

That's OK - it should work equally as well at Einstein & Milky Way Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

Since seti@home is shutting down at the end of March the points raised in this thread is moot. I'm just 2 months away from 20 years...it has been a good and fun run. |

Perfect timming, just when we finish the new unlimited spoofed client with CPU & GPU capacity... LOL My Imperious Leader! I made some calculations and my actual SSD could hold only up to 50000 WU. Hope that that number is enough for you! My Master! |

@ Stephen "Heretic" ... lead by example and drop all your machine work fetch sizes ... Good idea. My slowest computer had a turnaround of 1.14 days, and my fastest was 0.21 days. I don't know how many "days" 20 or 60 tasks is, so I just reduced them to 0.1 on the fast ones, and 0.3 on the slower one. After a day or so, I will check to see if I need to up or down the number of "days" requested. Stay tuned for an update. |

@ Stephen "Heretic" Don't waste your time, SETI will stop to produce new work in March 31. So the DB size problem will cease very fast after that. |

@ juan BFP Ops... for a million WU cache i will need a lot bigger SSD. A 1 TB would do. Heck, my M2 NVME has enough room, with 147 GB for more. This stick also has Windows 10 on it. 705KB*1,000,000=705 GB |

@ juan BFP Don't waste your time ...It wasn't a waste of time since I now have two or three backup/take over projects for when SETI stops sending work (and on the outage days). |

@ juan BFP I use an old sata 3 - 64GB SSD for the OS and the project plus a 3 TB HDD for the rest. The large cache requires to run on a SSD to be reliable and avoid high lags. But i will try to do my best to fulfill My Master wishes! Right now the cache is at · In progress (15299) only but is slowly increasing and the Boinc directory uses 12.3 GB. |

@ Stephen "Heretic" . . Since there is no point in sending out new work that will never be crunched I suspect they will end the splitting before that date. But yes, it is all a moot point now. Stephen :( |

@ juan BFP . . So that is why I keep getting "no tasks available" ... LOL. Stephen < shrug > |

Don't waste your time, SETI will stop to produce new work in March 31. So the DB size problem will cease very fast after that.Assuming they keep things running till all existing work is returned, i'd say it will take 6-8 weeks for a big dent int he database to occur. You have to wait for all those WUs that are waiting for their Quorum result to timeout on the systems that are holding things up. And with the present 4-8 week deadlines, that'll translate to 6-8 weeks for it to occur- then there should be a rather rapid drop in the size of the database over a few days, then a gradual decline after that down to 0. It is distribution of new tasks that stops on 31st March, I would guess that the number of new tapes loaded will be reduced in the last few days so there is a bare minimum of work going out at that time. I would also guess that there have been discussions behind the scenes as to how long after 31st March results will be accepted back, my guess is another month to catch as many of the last batch of data as is sensible. As to the current slow delivery of work - look back over the last few weeks and we've seen an shortage every 2-3 days, so we were due one.
