They could set a hard cap by limiting the task deadlines to go no further than a specific day. |

They could set a hard cap by limiting the task deadlines to go no further than a specific day. That would work for new work split. Still many months work out there without that hard deadline. Making use of the reduced deadlines for resends would help with those. Grant Darwin NT |

Boinc also has a mechanism for modifying the deadlines of tasks that are downloaded already. |

Maybe moot, but I liked the spitballing from the community. Lots of good ideas to fix a broken project. Too bad we will not have a chance to try out some of the proposed fixes. Seti@Home classic workunits:20,676 CPU time:74,226 hours A proud member of the OFA (Old Farts Association) |

I think we should, just so the servers don't fall over before the 31st. I propose a 2 week deadline for all new WUs (including AP), and a 3 day deadline for all resends. Might as well make a start on clearing the backlog now, not keep adding to what will need to be cleared out come the 31st. Grant Darwin NT |

Wishful thinking. I believe the project admins have just washed their hands of anything to do with the project. I doubt seriously they would implement any changes at this late stage in the game. Well it would help if the validators were validating, My computer reported some tasks at 04:26 this morning, and not one has been validated. And I still haven't downloaded any work. |

I believe the project admins have just washed their hands of anything to do with the project. After close to 21 years of their life dedicated to the project, that statement is at the very least, inappropriate. How many times have they physically or remotely accessed the servers to give them a kick on their time off just to keep people happy? This is all the thanks they get? |

And it's also contradicted by Eric's post in the staff blog:I believe the project admins have just washed their hands of anything to do with the project. After close to 21 years of their life dedicated to the project, that statement is at the very least, inappropriate. How many times have they physically or remotely accessed the servers to give them a kick on their time off just to keep people happy? This hurts me as much as it hurts you |

He and others have put a great deal into all of this and endings are painful. But I believe that Keith's sentiment was that with the plug being pulled on the volunteer participation the staff will be less than motivated to upgrade or improve the operations of that part of the project. There will be no time or money to 'fix' anything on this side of things. Stephen :( |

Something i not understand, maybe someone has the answer. If they know the projects was to as they call "hibernate" if few months, why the make such large moves like increase the server side WU limits, change the server versions, etc. ??? All the pain we suffer on the last 3/4 months was at the end for nothing? I agree change something like deadline will have minimum effect in the following 4 weeks who left fot the project generate new work and could generate another nightmare. The project could be closed (hibernate) without all this mess. |

There will be no time or money to 'fix' anything on this side of things.I can't speak for the whole administration team - I don't know who was involved in making this decision, but I would expect it included the University authorities. In the case of Eric's post, I don't think the remarks about motivation apply. Remember that first and foremost, Eric is an astronomer and a scientist. He has an interest in every part of the SETI project, from the original radio recordings at telescopes like Arecibo and Green Bank (though sadly never Parkes) to analysing and publishing the final results. Publishing results is baked into the psyche of every scientist worth their salt. Also, remember that within the last month, the AAAS has made a substantial report on past and future SETI initiatives. So far, I've only been able to find a somewhat garbled press report - Scientists Detail the Next Era in the Search for Extraterrestrial Life - and spin-offs in other news outlets. UC Berkeley has a much wider involvement in a broad range of SETI activities than just the '@Home' project. Andrew Siemion, director of the Berkeley SETI Research Center and lead investigator of Breakthrough Listen, is quoted as having 'made several program announcements.' I was surprised at the time that no mention was made of the contribution made by SETI@Home to re-invigorating the public interest in SETI and leading to this wider activity by the mainstream scientific community. In hindsight, this hibernation was probably already being planned when Andrew made his speech, and the silence is perhaps related. I hope that Andrew will make an appropriate recognition of the past and future role of the volunteer community in the wider SETI field at a convenient time in the near future. Speaking of Parkes, I played a part in the special fundraiser for the hardware anticipated to be used in adding Parkes data to the SETI@Home project. As a result, two years ago I received a personal letter from UCB, and I'll quote part of it. ... Your support will help to provide the SETI team with the resources to purchase new data processing equipment, which will have a great impact on their ability to understand their groundbreaking discoveries.I think everyone here should feel themselves included in those thanks. |

Something i not understand, maybe someone has the answer. that stuff happened all back around christmas time. ~3 months ago. what's happening now is probably a more recent decision. there may have been talks and suggestions to shut it down and they may have been exploring ways to keep it going within their budget constraints or whatever, but the final decision to actually do it was probably recent. and the final decision could have come from someone far above the guys working on the project, someone saying "I want results or you wont have funding" kind of thing. Something i not understand, maybe someone has the answer. "I want results or you wont have funding" That is what i think too, but have no intel to be sure. My other question is: why not keep acquiring and crunching more data while start processing the old one? The sky is so big. |

My other question is: why not keep acquiring and crunching more data while start processing the old one? The sky is so big.Because they don't have manpower do to both at the same time. Keeping a boinc server running at setiathome scale needs lot of work. And doubly so with all the problems we have had since December. |
