Brings back fond memories of using TheDraw to do ANSI graphics for BBSes.

Exactly what it was supposed to do. When I first joined SETI@home, I was using my P2 (if I remember correctly it was running at 800MHz), running windows NT4.0 SP 6 (followed by Server 2000, probably already happened by this time). I had CAT 5 cable strung all through the house to get the kid's workstations on the LAN. We had just left the days of ASCII art, BBS, and AO Hell over 56K Modems (US). I'd just got my first cable connection. DBCS was a brand new thing then. The days of IRC, programming in Windows was MFC, not .NET. I was running the SETI client on 5 home PCs, and I had 4 Dual P2 workstations at work I was running on that client. It took at least half a day to process a task on the faster machines. I can't imagine running S@H on a 486. How things changed.

Edit* Within 3 years, I'd be working on what was the world's 495th fastest supercomputer in Monterey, California, with an OC 3 connection. One 128 processor Cray, 2 128 & 1 512 processor SGI, to round off the suite. I assisted with the distribution for the products on a Sun E10K, and a few other Sun boxes.. I even wrote a few Visual Basic apps to modify the GRIB data we produced for varying purposes.

Then I must be blind, because I have trouble making a thumbs up, out of that one....
Time to bring back ASCII art.

Eric has posted about how many Tasks or Workunits are still in need of Validation in response to https://www.facebook.com/groups/317689381579505/permalink/3487289331286145/

If you are a Facebook member, you can see his comments.

In summary there are less than 2% of the "Results out in the field" that are still needed, around 17,200 at the time of his post, 9 hours ago.

I'm not a facebook member or user, but the comments are perfectly findable.

Including the second one, which hasn't been posted here before:

Eric Korpela: Yeah, the hoarders can be a problem, too. We'll still accept results after we've got them all validated, but the canonical result will already be in the database.

I checked through everything I have left today and made sure that none of them were pending for any reason. Everything else I have already has credit assigned, and that will be finished on one machine today, and the third machine...maybe day after tomorrow. I can safely say nobody is waiting on anything from me.

Looks like someone has messed with the back-off parameters again. Instead of a consistent 30 minutes, it's now 15 minutes for a couple cycles then bounces you out to 24 hours.

Each of my four pendings gained another wingmate overnight, making five in total. Two of them seem to be returning tasks already, so there's hope: two others haven't returned a sausage, including the one that got 96 of the resent tasks. This is going to take a while yet.

Hi Jim,

Yep, I just looked at mine and I'm at just under 24 hours. :(

Oh, but, Mr. 1337 got a boat load of tasks on his Core 2 Duo yesterday. I highly doubt anyone else is getting anything at all.

I have 0 pending and 4 inconclusive. I haven't gotten anything for about a week or more. I believe maybe since the 22nd of April.

I may just do as Juan has when I run out of inconclusive tasks. Or then again, maybe not just in case it doesn't take too long to get SETI running again. ;)

Have a great day! :)

. . Re Mr 1337 ... :(

. . Like you nothing for ages now, but I will leave the rigs connected to the project even with 24 hour backoffs just in case someone takes over the infrastructure with something interesting. Meantime I will persevere with E@H and WCG. If I lose interest/patience waiting for 'a new hope' and disconnect then I will probably shut down everything and take a holiday ...
