With the news that SETI will be using the Very Large Array for data gathering, does anyone know how the data will be analyzed? Will it be sent out through BOINC for SETI@home?

I have not seen the news that you are referring to? I believe if work is not sent out through boinc Seti at home will be made redundant unless they are going to make its own piece of software to be used on our computers.

I believe you are referring to the Breakthrough Listen post about the 2nd dataset being released. And the future telescope locations that are going to gather data for BL.

No mention at all of whether that data is going to be released to Seti@home. I hope so since the 2nd dataset contains targets in the Southern Hemisphere sky observed by the Parkes array in Australia.

But until we see some official project news by David Anderson or Eric Korpela, I would assume we will just continue to crunch old Arecibo data and the occasional new stuff from Green Bank.

Interesting that we have been doing a lot of re-crunching of old Arecibo work and very little new BLC data has been added in the past couple of weeks. Food for thought.

I was referring to this article: https://www.seti.org/seti-institute-and-national-radio-astronomy-observatory-team-up-for-seti-science-at-very-large-array.

The antenna is in New Mexico. Here is the first paragraph. It looks like an order of magnitude or more data than SETI presently monitors. It looks very exciting.

February 14, 2020, Mountain View, CA – The SETI Institute and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) are announcing a collaboration to bring a state-of-the-art search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) instrument to the Very Large Array (VLA) for the first time. Thanks to a new, cost-effective Ethernet interface, it will be possible to employ the VLA to search for technosignatures 24 hours a day - 7 days a week, as well as explore other natural astrophysical phenomena in novel ways. The new system is called the Commensal Open-Source Multimode Interferometer Cluster Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (COSMIC SETI).

You must remember that the SETI Institute and SETI@Home are 2 separate organisations. ;-)

Cheers.

Quit true.

I read about the VLA on the BBC website https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-51223704

Interesting read.

I think SETI@home has committed suicide with the creation of Science United by dr. David Anderson. I have enlisted my main computer to it giving astronomy, physics and chemistry as my interests. I am running thousands of Milkyway@home tasks, almost thirty thousand so far, hundreds of Asteroids@home tasks and very little else. I get no credits and never see the SETI@home screensavers on my Windows 10 PC with a Ryzen 5 1400 CPU, 24 GB RAM and a nVidia 1060 graphic board.

Science United was not created by SETI@Home, but by David Anderson who got a grant to do the initial development. I think SETI is a victim of Science United.

if you wan to run more SETI tasks, then just start running SETI directly. or you can use a more traditional method and sign up for the projects you want to support then setup your resource share accordingly. It's not that hard.

You can't really complain about SU not doing what you want when you've relinquished all control to it for the sake of simplicity.

I'm always amused by David Anderson's posts on the SU messages boards. 'SU passes 1 million job mark' (29 Jan 2019) and 'SU passes 4 million job mark' (29 Apr 2019). So that's a million jobs a month.

We do a million jobs three times a day.

So, the VLA data will not be compute by the seti@home project ?

I have been running SETI@home, Einstein@home, creditprediction.net, LHC@home, GPUGRID,AQUA@home before joining Science United. It gave me Milkyway@home and Asteroids@home and little else. Placet esperiri.

I wouldn't expect to see any attempts until there is a steady stream of data coming in from Parks.
Given we already have a couple of good equatorial/northern sky sources it might be an idea to look for another one "down South" - there are a few candidates to choose from, but, as always, it depends on funds and willingness to co-operate with S@H.

I was not far truth when I wrote that SETI@home was committing suicide with Science United. Now I am running thousands of Milkyway@home tasks on mostly CPU. GPU users can go to Einstein@home or GPUGRID (nVidia only).

Science United was a Boinc project, as far as I am aware it was not developed by SETI@Home

It's even more remote than that. Although About Science United makes it clear that it leverages the use of the pre-existing BOINC project, the Github code repository makes it clear that the ownership belongs personally to David Anderson, and that David is the only person to have made a code contribution to date.

The National Science Foundation grant applications 1550601 and 1664190 were also awarded to David Anderson as Principal Investigator, with academic sponsorship by UCB.

David's other collaborators on this project are named in the award abstract for 1664190: (a) the Texas Advanced Computing Center, a supercomputer center, and (b) nanoHUB, a web portal for nano science that provides computing capabilities.

I have a mix of my earlier BOINC projects and of Science United projects. In my Science United home page under the Scientific Projects page I see listed tasks , like LHC@home tasks, which I never saw running with the Science United tag but with my BOINC tag. They were all listed in Science United.
