Great news!

Wondering if we couldn't build a distributed file system for this project for example as backup, Tahoe-LAFS comes to mind.

We got so many computers which got probably some spare space for such a purpose.

Just an idea :)

Happy new year from Germany! 😙🎶

I Feel that it is great that funds are being raised for new storage equipment.

I also have a new way to search for advanced space traveling races, (Star travels). It has been discovered in cyclotrons, that when an atom is hit by a high speed partial, there is a release of X-rays. If a race of beings have the ability to travel from one star to the next, they would be the partial, and would be releasing a stream if X-rays as they travel. Might want to build software that will search for the X-ray emission between stars and check if they are moving.

Just a new suggestion. The faster they travel the higher amount of X-rays will be emitted.

Hi all,

This is my first post.

Have you guys considered approaching Seagate directly and seeing if they'll maybe just donate the drives to the project?

You always see Youtubers getting drives free from WD and Seagate. So thought, if you have not already tried, maybe email their marketing teams, or send them a tweet.

Anyways, just my 2 cents.

+!

And welcome to "non-lurker" status! You are right. If we could get the drives donated then we could spend the money or something else that it would be good to upgrade on.

I used the GPUUG site to donate a hard drive a few months ago, but I never saw one get added to the donation purchases shipped page. Anyone know someone over there I can contact about that?

Hi all !
Hi 83poolie !

I was also considering sending a message of the same kind, but then saw you already did it.
I totally agree with you. I'm pretty sure Seagate would be able to offer some hard drives.
As a world leader on the market, Seagate would probably appreciate to be involved in the project.
For my part, if I were a member off Seagate's marketing team, I'll seriously consider that Opportunity.

Why don't juste give a chance to such a possibility ?

P.S. : Yesterday was my 20th birthday participating in the SETI project. Happy birthday to me :-)

So now that they're pulling the plug, does that mean all these donations will be refunded?
Naw, didn't think so ...

And like magic, an answer appears elsewhere:

If you donated for the disk array, we'll still need that. Jeff is in the process of assembling it. If you gave money in the annual drive, we'll have bills to pay all the way to the end (including page charges for the papers).
