Message 2025252 - Posted: 28 Dec 2019, 0:59:57 UTC

I have three machines all running the latest Windows 10 with updates. Suddenly today one of them has been giving me statements on specific tasks that use a GPU, saying task is suspended because machine is in use. This machine has two NVideo GPUs and the task manager shows little or no activity on either of them, and Dell diagnostics on the GPUs give them a clean bill of health. I would appreciate any advice/help you can offer.

Many thanks,

Bill

As first step, in the BOINC client: Options > Computing Preferences > Suspend GPU computing when computer is in use should be unchecked.

Many thanks; that did the trick. However, I'm still a bit confused. Just what web-based preferences does a Seti task use, from Seti or perhaps GPUGrid? Right now I have the Einstein project open in the bottom part of the screen (Projects), but the option for the web-based preferences site is the seti web address. When I received your reply, I went to each of the sites for the projects I handle and ensured that they represented the correct preferences. Barring contradiction, I'm going to assume that each project uses its own web-based preferences and that what I see in Options is just a quirk.

Thanks again for your great assistance. Glad to know knowledgeable folks are hear to respond to a newbie's misunderstandings.

You're welcome. :^) You're correct that the web-based preferences in your project profile are independent. This setting to suspend the GPU when the computer is in use isn't one of them though as it's machine-specific; most people with more then one computer will have one "daily driver" they actually use which it would be on for, and the rest are BOINC-dedicated and it would be off for them.

Adding to what Kevin says - in the past I have found Einstein to "decide" to mess up the settings, even when "use local" settings is selected, so just be a bit careful.

When you go to https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/prefs.php?subset=global, see the "global" on the end? That means that for this location/venue, all of the preferences on this site will be used by all projects where you've set the same location/venue (default, home, work, school). You only have to set these preferences in one place, at one project, they will propagate automatically to the other projects when BOINC contacts them.

When you then look in BOINC Manager->Options->Computing Preferences it will show at the tip that you're using the web preferences and at which of the projects you set them. When using the local preferences and checking here, it will give you the option to change to the web preferences and for which project (has the latest settings).

Project preferences like https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/prefs.php?subset=project have preferences settings for that project only. These do not propagate to other projects. That way you can set for instance to use a GPU at Seti, but not at Einstein.
