White House unveils plans to reduce nicotine in cigarettes
wrote:
The amount of nicotine in cigarettes sold in the US is set to be reduced to minimal or non-addictive levels.

The White House on Tuesday unveiled the plans which could dramatically reduce cancer deaths... But the measure is likely to face opposition by the tobacco industry.

Smoking remains the US's leading cause of death, accounting for 480,000 every year...

IIRC that doesn't work. The craving is for a quantity of nicotine, so having less in each cigarette means more cigarettes.

So not sure the tobacco industry will fight that hard.

Of course if they get that habit more expensive than junk ... .

Pollution: 'Forever chemicals' in rainwater exceed safe levels
wrote:
... rainwater in most locations on Earth contains levels of chemicals that "greatly exceed" safety levels.

These synthetic substances called PFAS are used in non-stick pans, fire-fighting foam and water-repellent clothes. Dubbed 'forever chemicals', they persist for [very many] years in the environment.

Such is their prevalence now that scientists say there is no safe space on Earth to avoid them.

... "vitally important" that the use of these substances is rapidly restricted...

... four specific chemicals in the class, suggests that levels of one PFAS in rainwater around the globe often "greatly exceed" US drinking water advisory levels. Soil around the world is similarly contaminated, evidence suggests...

... Removing the chemicals in the study from drinking water at treatment plants is possible, if expensive...

... "It's not because there's anything wrong with the risk assessment. It's just because you can't apply those things. It's just impossible, from an economic viewpoint to apply any of those guidelines."...

TfL junk food advert ban: Has the policy cut obesity?
wrote:
A new study from top academics has claimed 100,000 obesity cases have been prevented due to a ban on junk food advertising on the Transport for London (TfL) network.

But is it true?...

... Since February 2019, adverts for foods high in calories from sugar or fat, or high in salt, have been banned across the TfL network.

Food and drink brands, restaurants, takeaways and delivery services are only allowed to place adverts that promote healthier products - rather than simply publicising brands.

The measures were introduced to help tackle child obesity...

... The ban directly led to 94,867 fewer cases of obesity than expected, a 4.8% decrease... The same study found the policy has led to 2,857 fewer cases of diabetes, and 1,915 fewer cases of cardiovascular disease.

Decreases this large would save the NHS an estimated £218m over the lifetime of the current population...

... These conclusions are based on a previous study into the purchasing habits of nearly 1,000 Londoners following the advertising ban, compared to 1,000 people in the north-east of England...

... And the effect for the subgroup of people "where the main food shopper reported public transport use" was an even greater reduction, of 1,307 calories [per day]...

... the report that found households were buying 1,001 fewer calories of food - which he worked on - is "our best estimate to what the impact of the ban has been". "It's certainly not 100% accurate, but it's not a rubbish estimate either,"...

... "There is a body of information that links advertising to purchasing and eating of food," he said. "From there the impact on calorie consumption, its effect on body weight and health outcomes, is pretty predictable...

Are we long overdue to put an end to the costly no-morals-no-cares unhealthy advertising?

This really does cost lives.

Stay healthy!

Startling!

Yet 'obvious'?

Yet how can we have 'overlooked' and ignored this for so long?...

That interview covers some aspects of what we call "mental health" and "anxiety", however, the findings that are discussed apply widely to how we all eat and enjoy our food and with that, how we enjoy our lives.

(Keep with the interview, the practical comments come after quite a lot of back story. There are some good surprises in there...!)

Enjoy!

Johnson & Johnson to replace talc-based powder with cornstarch
wrote:
Johnson & Johnson (J&J) will stop making and selling its talc-based baby powder around the world from next year.

The announcement comes more than two years after the healthcare giant ended sales of the product in the US.

J&J faces tens of thousands of lawsuits from women who allege its talcum powder contained asbestos and caused them to develop ovarian cancer. But the company reiterated its view that decades of independent research shows the product is safe to use...

... At the time the firm said it would continue to sell its talc-based baby powder in the UK and the rest of the world.

The company faces lawsuits from consumers and their survivors who claim J&J's talc products caused cancer due to contamination with asbestos.

Talc is mined from the earth and is found in seams close to that of asbestos, which is a material known to cause cancer. A 2018 investigation by the Reuters news agency claimed that J&J knew for decades that asbestos was present in its talc products...

So why the change only now, decades later?...
