I am a very 'set it and forget it' user of seti@home on my machines. However, I was just wondering if there is still a stream of new incoming data for us to crunch of if the data being sent is older 'pre-crunched' data that we are doing again but with updated versions to look in more detail. They have not produced a new 'science newsletter' in 10 years. I read about Nebula when it was 1st mentioned, but that is on their end, not ours (if I'm correct). Breakthrough Listen was the latest data source I heard of, but is that data being sent to us to crunch yet?

All of the Breakthrough Listen "blc" work units, which are about 95% of what we are getting, are new. The other 5% is Arecibo work, a mixture of old and new data, and new Astropulse data. Re-examining old data could be useful as our algorithms have been improved and debugged significantly over the years.

Thanks for that info! I read somewhere that we are only going to get a very small percentage of the Breakthrough data, is that accurate? The rest is to be done 'in house'.

Correct... there is an analysis done on-site when the data is captured, but there is so much data SETI@Home only is able to process one percent of it. This is unfortunate as our analysis is much more sensitive (by a factor of about ten.)

The upside of this is that, because all of the Breakthrough Listen data will be archived permanently, SETI@Home will have enough work for centuries.

And Breakthrough is a targeted search for SETI, using dedicated telescope time and concentrating mostly on our own galaxy. If we are dedicated to using our sensitive analytical techniques on the prime candidate recordings from a targeted search (not fully confirmed), the chances of success are far greater than using our old Arecibo technique of piggy-backing on whatever radio astronomy was being conducted at the time.

Thanks for the info!! Nice to know we have plenty of work. Admittedly, for me personally I'm not overly concerned about what particular work I'm doing so long as I'm helping out as best I can.

With 8 boxes running at very respectable paces I would say you are helping much more than average.
