Automation doesn't seem to help either.

Train collision hits iron ore giant Rio Tinto in WA.

Mining giant Rio Tinto is investigating a serious train collision on its rail network in Western Australia.

One of its autonomous trains smashed into a set of stationary wagons about 80km from Karratha in the state’s Pilbara region just after midnight on Monday.

The company confirmed no one was injured in the smash but three locomotives and 22 wagons were impacted.

“We have notified the appropriate regulators and commenced an investigation,” a spokesman said.

“Work will soon begin to clear the rail line.”

The Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator is also looking into the collision......

If you're going to do something, you might as well do it right.

In an unassuming rumpus room, model rail enthusiast Peter Michalak has been working for more than a decade on a mammoth project that has cost him tens of thousands of dollars and caused him to suffer "lots of" burnt fingers.
He estimates it will "easily" take him at least another 10 years to finish the intricate and nostalgic recreation of the broad gauge train line that once ran from Adelaide to the Victorian town of Serviceton.
...
So how much has it cost so far?

"Please don't ask," Mr Michalak said.
"Just locomotives and rolling stock, there's at least $20,000 worth of stuff on there. That's not including the track, or the scenery, or the bench work.
"It gets expensive, fast. Very, very fast."

The video is well worth watching.

Another foolish truck driver tries to take on The Afghan Express causing an inconvenience to travellers.

Truck crashes into The Ghan near Alice Springs, with passengers moved to busses.

Passengers have had a once-in-a-lifetime trip cut short after a cattle truck hit The Ghan train in the Australian outback.

The truck collided with the luxury passenger train about 10am local time on Sunday at a level crossing about 60km north of Alice Springs.

A spokeswoman for Journey Beyond, the company that manages the The Ghan, said no serious injuries had been identified by passengers, train drivers or crew.

“Coach transport has been arranged to collect guests and transfer them to Alice Springs,” she said.

“Emergency services are currently attending the scene.”.........
