I need to re-install Windows 7, but don't want to create a new Seti ID, plus I'd like to keep all the boinc/seti associated text files I've edited over the years ;-) Am I right in thinking all I need to do is as follows? 1. Re-install Boinc (but don't run it) 2. Re-install Lunatics (again, don't run it) 3. Copy entire \programdata\boinc folder from old install to new install Will that do the trick, would it also carry on processing any existing tasks, if needed, though the plan is to complete all existing tasks before the re-install. Even if you end up with a new ID, you should be able to "combine" the old # into the new one. Basically it takes the credit total from the old PC#, adds it to the new one, and retires the old one. Same OS, same hardware, etc and it works fine. |

Yeah, I knew about the Merge aspect thanks, was more concerned about having to abort a load of tasks, this pc has been a little "fragile" recently ;-) P. |

I need to re-install Windows 7 Support for Windows 7 ends January 2020, at which point you'll no longer receive security updates. You might want to consider running a different OS. |

Set your cache down to a very small size - say 0.1 +0.01 (or even smaller). Remember 0.1 days = 2.4 hours. This will reduce the number of tasks in hand, then a few hours before the final switch-off set No New Tasks to get rid of the bulk of the remaining tasks. You might consider the still free upgrade to 10 if you can stomach the forced updates. The "reset to factory" will reinstall 10, a really nice feature if system has been hosed. you can tell it to keep your files or copy them off like earlier suggestions. 10 includes security programs and updates which are nice. I have several win7 z400 that I upgraded to 10. Just found out that HP released a new bios for this really old z400 system that addresses that spectre "intel" chip virus. I wish eVga and Dell would update their old bios the same way. |

Upgrading to Win10 is NOT going to happen whilst have I breath left to breath ;-) I hate that OS with a passion, and hate Mickeysoft even more for producing it. 7 does everything I need, without hassles, and lack of updates doesn't bother me one iota ;-) P. |

Dont think you need to reinstall Lunatics. Copying the Data file will bring the Lunatics files over with everything else. Just need to reinstall boinc. swap that folder and then run it like ya stole it. I know this because I keep my data folder on a micro sd card because Im always reinstalling operating systems and generally messing around with custom bios roms and DIY pc hardware, etc. Its the easiest way Ive found to keep on going. With that said, Ive got a bad habit of accidentally formatting the sd card during the install of whatever os I am currently playing with. Kind of self defeating.... |

Years ago (early 90's I think, back in the cdrom.com days) I did take an interest in FreeBSD, but it never lasted, these days I think Linux is too fragmented for most people, certainly for me, anyway. I think I've had enough tinkering under the bonnet, I just want to get in and drive, so to speak ;-) I've had various flavours en-route, even commercial ones, such as Xandros (which I liked). But at the end of the day, although brought up on DOS & Desqview, my command line days are well and truly over, I much prefer a gui driven system. Now I think we're getting slightly off-topic, so I'll waxing lyrical ;-) P. |
