Okay... I've decided to tinker with Linux Mint Cinnamon v19.2, and I'm somewhat successful. But... I've downloaded and installed Mint to a virgin USB thumb drive and booted to the same, I am running it on the thumb drive instead of my SSD. Only thing, Mint does not recognize my GPU which is a 2060. I wonder if this is because I'm using a USB instead of the SSD? But then, in Linux (before I downloaded Mint) I couldn't get my screen to show anything other than 1024x768 w/4:3 resolution. I even tried downloading a different driver specifically for Linux but it didn't work, said the driver was corrupt.

My SETI account does show Linux Mint as a second computer with a new ID, though no tasks yet because it just began.

In the mean time, this is what my event log says at/during start up, I just cut it off when it says "got 100 new tasks":

Any comments, good or bad, or even neutral are welcome and appreciated. Once again, I'll admit I'm a newbie at this and I'm also ignorant with some (much?) of the lingo and stuff.

I'm going to have a cocktail and a smoke and I'll be back in awhile.

Never used a USB for running Linux, less so for mint. Obviously there is no driver installed for the GPU. So you need to find a way to do that. Maybe Stephen? I think he runs linux from a stick. Might want to see if he can tell you how to do it. You never mention what driver you used. I thought you needed 428 or later. Good luck.

I suspect you need to install the video driver.

I'm no Linux guru but I think you want:

sudo apt-get install nvidia-driver-430

Until you fix the driver problem (install it) you can't crunch on the GPU

I suspect you need to install the video driver.

I'm no Linux guru but I think you want:

sudo apt-get install nvidia-driver-430

This is correct. Or rather simplified as:
sudo apt install nvidia-driver-430

This will install the nvidia drivers so that BOINC can use them to detect your gpu.

I'll try it again, but the first time it said the file was corrupt.

And yes, I'm using a new SanDisk 3.1 USB so I don't think it'll be hard on my USB.

What file system did you put on the USB stick? Did you accept the default ext4 during the installation?

You have to reboot to the OS to load the new video drivers.

Video drivers are not standalone like they are in Windows. They are incorporated directly into the Linux kernel. Why you have to reboot the machine to load the new kernel with the video drivers inside them.

I'm not sure what you mean. I put Linux Mint Cinnamon 19.2 on when I loaded it. I've no clue what the default ext4 is.

What file system did you put on the USB stick? Did you accept the default ext4 during the installation?

I'm not sure what you mean. I put Linux Mint Cinnamon 19.2 on when I loaded it. I've no clue what the default ext4 is.

The default file system for Linux is called ext4. Just a different filesystem compared to what you are used to seeing with DOS and Windows. A better, more advanced filesystem that might be compared to the standard NTFS filesystem of Windows. There are many filesystems in use in Linux, all more advanced and mission-critical compared to Windows.

Well I've obviously did something wrong here. I've lost SETI@Home, I can't find it anywhere in Linux. I think that what I did was download and install Linux in memory and it was lost when I rebooted.

So... How do I download SETI onto my USB?

Next thing, I still can't get anything other than the "laptop" display settings: 1024x768 w/4:3 resolution.

Help!
George

From your earlier posts, you installed the Mint distro version of BOINC which is daemon mode installation. Once you get it running, open the Manager Options menu >> Other options and select the "Run the client" checkmark.

To start the client run:
/etc/init.d/boinc-client start

To stop the client run:
/etc/init.d/boinc-client stop

To restart the client run:
/etc/init.d/boinc-client restart

https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Stop_or_start_BOINC_daemon_after_boot

The initial installation of BOINC should have created a startup script to run the client automatically at login.

Open the Settings menu and select Devices >> Display >> Resolution and choose a different resolution appropriate for your monitor.

From : https://linuxmint-installation-guide.readthedocs.io/en/latest/install.html

The live session is similar to a normal session (i.e. to Linux Mint once it is permanently installed on the computer), but with the following exceptions:

The Live session is slower (it is loaded from a USB stick or DVD as opposed to a SSD or HDD).
Changes you make in the live session are not permanent. They are not written to the USB stick (or DVD) and they do not impact the system installed by the installer.
Some applications work differently (or not at all) in the live session (Timeshift, Flatpak, Update Manager, Welcome Screen..etc.).

That sort of answers my question... but then, Mike, how do you run Linux on a USB stick?
