Hi,

I've been re-installing windows 10 as every time I try to use CUDA on my RTX 2080 for making Seti@Home working.

Some say to use the system install, some not, some as is in the Boinc intall, I remove the check mark for not server intall, then with server install, as admin and not, all users or just admin...

So it been about 11 times I've re-install everything, including the CUDA toolkit 10 when the CUDA is not working in the basic BOINC install... as suppose to.

Any help will be appreciated as I can't find the proper way to make it work.

I was very happy with my AMD EAHD5970 that was working fine for 11 years...

Now I change for new tech as Ray tracing and AI for later; but CUDA is not working in this program.

The card is working fine for anything else: Adobe Premier, online Games, video Benchmark ... CUDA results are flying even without the CUDA Tollkit.

For processing SETI applications (on Windows based computers) you do not want to do a "system" (service) installation of BOINC - the required drives will not be accessible.
You need to prevent Windows 10 install the drivers for your RTX2080.

It would appear that your RTX2080 has been detected by BOINC, but is not being used, so:
There are two "families" of application for the nVidia cards - those based on CUDA technology, and those based on "OpenCL". For your computer, under Windows, the latter applications will be the fastest.
You do not need to have the CUDA toolkit installed (some reports say having it installed may be counter productive).
Make sure you have the "use GPU" options set to either "all the time", or have the suspend level set to significantly more than the the default when computer use is more than 25%".
Makes sure you have the "run nVidia GPU tasks" option selected your account settings (on the web site) otherwise you won't get any tasks.
It appears you are running the "stock" applications, once your computer starts to get tasks for the GPU it will try several different CUDA versions, and the "SoG" application. After a few tries it should settle on the SoG application (this is the one that uses OpenCL) - the run times with this application are typically less than half those of the fastest CUDA application (at least under Windows - you will have seen some really fast times for a highly optimised CUDA 9/10 running under Linux, these applications are not available for Windows yet as they use some techniques that Windows doesn't play ball with)

Finally - allow the (CPU) tasks you've got to complete - it could be that these tasks are "blocking" your computer from getting any tasks for your GPU (I had this happen the other day on one of my computers that has just "suffered" a major upgrade....)

Hi Rob,
Thank you for your review and explaining how Boinc & Seti@Home application work.
I've re-install as you recomanded and still the same issue.

But, I've read your recomandation again and there is one thing that I didn't see anywhere, even on other forums, is this option you mentioned: "Makes sure you have the "run nVidia GPU tasks" option selected your account settings (on the web site) otherwise you won't get any tasks."

Because I was using on this PC the ATI (EAHD5970) before, this option is not part of the BOINC setup to be changed!
I've change it to NVidia and it start receiving task for it!

Thank you again for that part, I have another less critical question: "(cuda42) and (cuda50)" are those will change to OpenCL by themself or it need a push to switch?

Because it show for the new downloaded task: estimating time 4:11 mins to run, but it take 25-26 mins.

From my previous ATI card, it took only 21 mins to complete, on OpenCL.

So a 11 years old card work faster than the new one... kinda useless new card for that purpose.

I'll try the Linux side one day, just to see the results... since my PC is mostly working on videos rendering, that is why I'm not using Linux

In any case, I really appreciate your insight that actually worked!

Richard.

Seti will work through the various applications incuding the OpenCL one before working out which is the best. This can take a few days or moreto do. If after a week or so it is still selecting CUDA then there is a way of forcing, but I need to be at my computers not on a phone to explain it properly.

I'm glad you've got the beast running now. I find more is learned by making small mistakes than reading someone elses's cookbook.
