I keep on finding machines with a black screen and a white arrow. I need to power off and then back on to get them to boot backup. Anyone seen this?

That sounds like you are logging off the current user and dropping out of the X server. Look for X11 issues or graphics driver issues.

Yes, if you are logged off from the Desktop, you have no video drivers loaded which are required for crunching gpu tasks.

I noticed the system with nvidia 430 doesnt crash the one with 418 does.

The 418 drivers are now deprecated. The 430.40 drivers are the default installed Nvidia drivers in the distro now.
