"The planet named GJ 357 d, is six times larger than Earth. It orbits a dwarf star with two other previously unknown planets.

This potential "super Earth" is located within the outer edge of its star's habitable zone, where it receives about the same amount of stellar energy as Mars does from the sun. If this planet has a dense atmosphere, it could trap enough heat to allow for liquid water on its surface. "

First off it is said to be 31 light years away but is is six times larger then Earth.

Would that be 6G to us where 1G is our gravity. Man oh Man that is heavy .

Oh only 31 light years away, we should leave right now, maybe we can be there for christmas.Heavy gravity though , I thought of that straigt away when I read how big the planet is.

They found quite a few of these sort of planets in recent years...I always loved astronomy.

I'm guessing it would take a "Generational" ship to get there.

We need much faster methods of propultion, out chemical rockets are just too slow.

I like the xray telescope that they recently launched too, gives us another angle of vision to find things in space . I find this all very exiting.

I am under the impression we will be able to determine the atmosphere once James Webb Telescope is up there.
It will be so cool to find an oxygen rich atmosphere. That, I understand is strong evidence of life.
If there is plant life then tree trunks must be seriously massive. Any "animal life" would be very strong compared to Earth's animals since it is like 6G.
If I was on that planet I would be flat on the ground trying to lift my head up even a little. Funny thought!
Hey tho, I think I read "Super Earths" are common. Do you remember reading that?

Super Earths are somewhat "common" because they are big enough to be "seen" as they transit their star.

Given a larger diameter, the surface gravity falls off quickly, due to its greater distance from the center of mass. We know the mass of this newly discovered planet, but not its size. Hence, we can not yet know its surface gravity. There are reasonable scenarios where the surface gravity could be only twice that of Earth.

I have read that the gravity is calculated to 2.7G on GJ 357 d surface if the planet has about 1.5 times the radius of the Earth..

Call me if they find an "earthlike" planet circling a star less than 10 LY from us. And even then it would take a means of propulsion way beyond what we can do to get there in less than a lifetime. Unless or until some genius invents some sort of interstellar power plant we are stuck within the confines of our own star system so we better start taking better care of mother earth as it will end up a lot cheaper than making some other rock, even one circling our own star, habitable.
