Ah, a picture is once again, worth a thousand words.

I got to looking for 40mm fans this morning.

Is this a good choice?

I found at least one adapter that should be able drive these.

Is there a better choice?

Unbranded, no technical data...
Turn around and walk away until you are round the corner - then RUN.

Are there any better?
Loads!
Do a search for EBM-Papst on the US equivalents of RS and Farnell. They build fans to last, and live up to the performance figures, unlike so many of the un-branded stuff which either fails early or doesn't meet its performance spec (if it has one).
Word of warning - they aren't the cheapest fans on the block.

(If you've been following my infrequent posts about the 256 GPU monster you will recall that is totally air-cooled, all the "smaller" (less than 500mm dia) fans are EBM-Papst right down to the 25mm ones that direct air across every north & south bridge)

I would recommend the Noctua 40 X 10 fan. The one in the image I posted. Costs less than your eBay total of parts.

That fan looks frighteningly similar to the 120 and 140mm aerocool Dead silent fans. These are junk. They also promise 100k+ hours of use. Sadly, these things fair worse than a standard cooling fan.

Are you referring to the Noctua fan link? You are sadly mistaken if so. I have never had a single Noctua fan failure in ten years of constant use. The Noctua fans are pricey but worth it.

More likely they ripped off the Noctua look to suck people in to buying their rubbish, because it looed like ones that aren't rubbish.

Now, for the next MONTH at least sit back and watch that computer. Don't change anything, just monitor it and let it run. Doing so will get you a half decent baseline from which to see what effect changes have.

Had neighborhood power outage a couple of days ago. Was down long enough for the RAC's to stumble.

The wallclock time on the cpu tasks I "recognize" are usually a bit to well below `1 hour. Some of the others are not.

The cpu speed watcher than I am using (Thank you Keith) shows the cpus pretty much still pegged at right below 4Ghz.

Just added (15 minutes down) a cpu socket fan so that is a little cooler.

Its doing that "set and forget" that everyone should be striving for.
