Yes, that cpu was running red-hot. You need a better cooling solution. Glad to see you got the sensors working. Are you running just sensors in the Terminal or do you have a Desktop monitor like Psensor or GKrellm to display sensors?


I have Psensor running. I need to re-check the preferences because maybe more are exposed now that I have the other installed.

Tom, forgive me if I missed it in this thread, but are these computers you're having high temp problems with in a case, or open? If its in a case, what's your case fan situation?


This one is an open rack with the stock cpu cooler plus a fan blowing on the cpu from the side.

Hey Tom, let me give you a little tip that I have been doing with AMD processors since the K10. Get yourself a little 40mm fan and mount it to the backside of the cpu socket on the bottom of the motherboard blowing air down over the PCB directly under the socket. The AMD backing plate has a big square cutout to clear all the SMD caps and resistors on the underside of the socket. Get yourself a roll of that double-sided foam tape you use to mount pictures to make two legs to mount the 40mm fan to the backing plate so that the fan stands about 3/4" high of the PCB. The air blown down on the socket will reduce both the cpu socket temps and the cpu temps considerably. It will reduce the socket temp by 20° C. and the cpu temp by at least 5° C. Plug the fan into the CPU Opt header that rarely gets used.


Thank you for the directions. Let me see what fans I have laying around here. The replacement cpu cooler should be arrive in about a week.

So this is to blow under the motherboard across the cpu cooler mounting plate? As you can tell I am still having trouble picturing where the fan should be attached.

Yes, just right click Psensor to open the configuration and toggle which sensors you want to display.

Ah, a picture is once again, worth a thousand words. I have some extra fans that may not be a flat as that one but still should work in my open rack. Will get on that Monday when life slows down. Then maybe I can crank up the OC some again while I wait for the newest cpu cooler to show up.

The good news is that the Crosshair MB has been absolutely stable.

The bad news is I appear to be stuck at a 6 gpu maximum. This is causing me to lose some of my RAC.

With 2 M.2 to riser cards installed the system will only recognize 6 gpus.

I need to play with one of the M.2 riser cards. It may not be working. Since I have some replacements....

Running 6 gpus and then adding the 1 to 4 expander card back in to try to get 7 running causes a POST failure. It stops at the same place every time just like it did when I tried without the M.2 cards.

Since I spent a significant time on experimenting I am taking a rest.

I have not yet successfully attached the external fan to the bottom of the cpu plate under the MB. Maybe try again this afternoon.

I am thinking that except for trying to get up to 7 or 8 gpus I am not going to try anything else on the MB till after the WOW contest.

Has become a 6 gpu, all gtx 1060 system. After running 7 gpus for 2 weeks, the system would crash after running many days. It crashed twice.

And I didn't catch it this last time so it has been down for at least a day.

I have been considering trying to transplant the 9 gpu Biostar MB. It would really pump up the RAC if I had 9 gtx 1060's running and was able to get the MB stable at "auto" clock speeds.

That maybe an afternoon or evening project today.

I don't know if the AMD boards have a setting that is synonymous with the "Above 4G Decoding" setting i have on my Intel boards. But look for that if you haven't already.

He did and could not find it. I looked through my BIOS cursorily and did not find it either. I would need to investigate every possible BIOS entry position. Or hope that F9 finds it. But depending on the BIOS, items move in and out of the Find function all the time apparently. At least that is what I read from all the BIOS modders at OCN.

And a lot higher clocks for both cpu and memory than he ever could achieve on that B450 board. If the system does not go down every day or during the night, I would think that his RAC will continue to build without interruptions.
My C7H's just run and run and run. If I don't ever go look at them, I am always surprised that they have been running for a month when I do and then see all the pending updates showing. That is the only reason they ever get rebooted. The C7H is a very solid and dependable board.

Well I transplanted the Biostar MB onto the 2600 box. And guess what. It doesn't want to do 9 gpus anymore. The bios toggle that worked with the 2700 cpu doesn't with the 2600. Instead it cycles directly back into the bios.

I did get 7 gpus running.

If I wasn't have so much fun, I'd have no fun at all............ (From Hee Haw's "If I didn't have bad luck, I'd have no luck at all...).

Its currently the test bench in my bedroom. Not resting.

I may just throw up my hands and plug the "spare" gtx 1070's from the 2700 into the Intel server box so that at least all the high-end gpus are processing for the WOW....

If you want high GPU counts, Intel platform is the way to go. They seem to better support this kind of thing.

But that requires the HEDT platform and the high PCIe lane count cpus to go with it. More $mobo + More $cpu. But agree, less hassle in the end.

I have a open box $30 12 gpu Intel mining board on order that Tbar found. I still have to scramble up a cpu but it turns out one of my spare Noctura cpu fans runs the lga 1151 socket.

Until I can get my cpu fully OCed, I am still losing (slowly) RAC. And once it is OCed I am not confident I will regain much RAC ground. I am going from a 9 gpu box to a 6 gpu box. And even though the ones I lost were all gtx 1060 3GB's they were worth near 120,000 RAC and I don't really think I will be able to get it back on this MB.

I would think it would lead to instability. The current Ryzen 3000 BIOS doesn't even qualify as an "alpha" let alone a "beta"

Get a better cooler on the cpu and then just set the multiplier to 4000Mhz and leave the CPU and SoC voltage on Auto. Set LLC to Auto and the cpu voltage under load should end up around 1.34V and run around 130W under load. Should only run around 65-70° C. under load.

Q-code 90 in the manual says "Boot Device Selection (BDS) phase is started" So confusion about which device to boot. In the BIOS do you have "Fast Boot" disabled? Secure Boot to "Other OS" ? CSM Mode to Auto or Disabled?
