Celebrating the SETI Wow event is a noble undertaking but the month of August in the Northern Hemisphere is proven by record to be the hottest time of the year and we at least in Southern North America can be assured of day-time temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit/40 degrees centigrade for at least 80% of the inclusive days of the celebration. Granted, many of our computer locations are cooled with electric driven refrigerated air conditioning but that can place a very heavy load demand on the electric generating systems and possibly create a financial burden on certain contributors.. I personally want to do my very best to be a team and project good player but I have to consider the demand on the electric grid and I know for sure that others may not be financially capable of full contribution for the duration of this worthy project. My personal plan will probably be to operate at 100% (24 hours/day) for a few days and then perhaps operate my four GPU-equipped computers only during the late evening and nighttime hours under full cooling air-conditioning for the remaining duration. I know for a fact that my newly acquired RTX 2080 GPU equipped device generates heat similar to a small electric heater. Perhaps future planning might give additional consideration to the climate when planning these worthy projects. Winter months it would seem would be the ideal time to conduct such projects as the WOW celebration. Hopefully something to think about. BET |

If held in your Winter then the reverse will happen for those in the Southern Hemisphere, better to do it during Spring/Autumn when world temps are roughly the same? |

The so called "Wow!" signal was received here on August 15, 1977 so why not hold it on its anniversary dates? Cheers. |

The so called "Wow!" signal was received here on August 15, 1977 so why not hold it on its anniversary dates? For several reasons some already stated: 1. Overload of the Electric Power Grid in the hottest period of the year in areas of the Northern Hemisphere. 2. Unnecessary wear and tear on the refrigerated Air Conditioning systems of the computer-occupied structures. 3 Potential damage to computer systems while operating at near high temperature limits. 4. Enhanced cost factors for electric power consumption and for damage to and/or replacement of failed hardware. 5. Personal discomfort from high temperatures within the room(s) where computing components are located. 6. And last but certainly not least: All the factors stated plus possibly others would be measurably reduced by aggressive computing during cooler periods. I appreciate all inputs. Bill Forecast today: 105 Fahrenheit and 40.55 Centigrade. |

The original intention of the event was to "celebrate" the Wow! signal. And that (or naming with "Wow!") in our view only makes sense on 15.8. (start or end of the event). Anytime somebody can organize an event in spring or autumn, but at SETI.Germany the calendar with Pentathlon and WCG Birthday (and the other competitions) is already very full, so it would not be organized by us. Sorry. Best regards Terminator SETI.Germany |

As fully expected, the State Agency responsible for managing electric energy production and distribution throughout the entire State of Texas has declared a "Stage I Energy Emergency. The impact will be obvious and will restrict, probably, most WOW! computing to nighttime hours. |

Now that the event has commenced my record high tasks pending, due to the rampant bunkering, are starting to drop and my RAC is starting to rise. I shall crunch on and try not to let it deter my efforts for this project. |
