Yes I'm there too.. I have those thermostats and I usually see them fooling with them. But if they mess with them too much, the thermostat drops off the wifi and then it defaults to my preprogrammed settings. So....

I just looked at my bill and I am 95% and have a number of neighbors at 99 plus this is a new community and there are new homes for sale all vacant which distorts statistics so I feel much better and am back on the WOW.

Hello Keith, that's very interesting what you write. Thank you for the informations. The energy industry is on the move. The coming times will be exciting. I changed my behavior to consume energy. Seti counts only with solar power, which I generate myself. At night the computers are switched off. Everyone has to do something if the energy turnaround is to succeed. This is my personal opinion.

I try to offset my Seti power usage with solar generation. For the first two years with only two computers and a car, I was net-zero. But adding 3 more computers have moved the needle in the wrong direction. I need to increase my solar generation by 120% to offset power usage now. Coming up with enough ground and rooftop real estate is a challenge.

What can cause the huge spikes in Munin graphics for Average turnaround? Average usually is around 30-40 hours but the spikes are around 200-350 hours. Someone is returning a lot of long overdue tasks in batches? It must be huge batches for the average to jump so high.

WOW event, bunkering.

Keeping ahead of the competition by having one machine in reserve, use GPU spoofing, download several thousand tasks before the event starts, set machine to not report tasks, release a few thousand at the start, download replacement tasks, set the machine to not report. Crunch these tasks, when done, release these in bulk to "jump ahead" of the competition. Rinse and repeat till the end of event, when all tasks, probably 4-6 thousand are released.

To do this successfully hide machines while event is on. Keeps the competition guessing.

PS I am not doing this it is what I think happens.

Hi Bernie,

I have to wonder, why can't this event just be straight forward; no spoofing, no bunkering, just straight forward crunching to see who comes out on top? We already know who's on top.

This is analogous to secretly having an NOS system installed in a race car (not an official race mind you). When the race gets near the end, the driver engages the NOS to jump past the competition and BAM! He's the winner.

I won't enter a contest like this because of all the shenanigans that users pull.

Have a great day! :)

Siran

[edit]
And I don't want to hear "It's all for the science." BS. It's for RAC and credits. Granted, science gets done, but that's NOT the gist of a contest like this.

I have one computer only, I do this for science not for EGO..

I have only one too. I do for the science and the fun.
Bunkering, spoofing or whatever are just different ways to have fun.

WoW is an event, a celebration, not a competition, that is what some still not understand.

No matter how much you could crunch, the important is participate in the party.

BTW this is exactly the same philosophy of SETI@Home anyone could participate, no matter the size of his cruncher or farm, from a single Pi, to a large minning cruncher, all are welcomed to the party.

Sure WoW is a competition for some people, and it has always been like that.
However valid science are still being made. That is what counts.

I don't compete with anyone else than myself, and my results from previous years.
This year, I will beat my results from last year at least :-)
Don't forget to have fun though, no matter your reasons for participating.

+1 , Amen to that!

The problem is we humans, we tend to make a competition out of almost anything. I think it's in our nature or how society has formed as to become what we are.
Some people tend to spend their money on going to a golf course, some buy a sailboat and think that's it, some are trapped in addictions and perhaps even need to steal money to continue with their addicts and some people are wacky enough to buy shitloads of graphiccards to crunch as hell to tap their own back and say. "Hey, look what i've done, i'm good. *pat* *pat*"

My own goal is trying to get to one billion credits without filing for personal bankrupcy, because for sure, this hobby ain't that cheap. And we're doing it for free as well! :)

2 cents from me.

While others just carry on as they always have done, but maybe chuck a few extra computers on line for the couple of weeks of the WOW event "just for the heck of it".

I fit in this category. Most of my computers will be shut off except for one or two until the next Wow event

Well, for some folks it is life or death, and they see the only way to live is to spoof, bunker etc. so they do it to an extreme.
There are others who spoof and/or bunker as a way of life.

Well I am one of those who enter the event for the Just For The Heck Of It lol :-)

Each to their own, and anyways its all a bit of fun, we all have a little bit of fun with each other and team mates .

Happy crunching and Cheers

I have always looked at WOW as a way to see if I can beat my previous year, due to family problems in 2016 and 2017 I was unable to crunch to the end.

Last year I did my best but somehow I didn't feel it was enough. So this year I was keen to beat last years total. I seem to have managed that ;-)

As others have said it is a once a year bit of fun, seeing just how well you can do.

After the event I also will "power down" most of my farm, and redesign and upgrade it for next year.

I am retired and it is a hobby I enjoy and it keeps the mind active.

PS My "adventure" in Linux was 100% driven by this event,

My goal has always been to beat my previous years efforts. Seem to doing that again this year. Though a podium finish is out of the question this year, at least for participant. I think it great fun and enjoy the challenge. Last years Bronze podium for Participant was right up there with finally breaking 80 for 18 holes of golf for me.
