Never heard a peep out of the general rabble until this year.

Well you obviously missed the posts last year, and I think the year before. Then it was mostly about people with access to hundreds of "work" machines should have a separate category

However it is likely to be worse this year because there is the "special app" and the "GPU spoofing" meaning some will be able to bunker 6400 task per machine if they wish.

For reasons I wont go into here, I spent money on my machines and GPU's got round Linux, installed the special app, really for the WOW event ,mostly for my team.

I currently have the time and money to do this, but there are many who do not and would feel totally overpowered by someone running high end CPU and GPU's in multiple rigs.

So lets not call other posters "rabble" it helps to made the divide bigger.

I remember it because I was one of those that raised the comments. But my disgust was with people or a group pretending to be an individual having machines listed under their account which they didn't own, didn't maintain or didn't pay the power bills...ie GridCoin or other Bitcoin types groups. I felt that they should be listed as a "Group" since technically that is what they are instead of being listed in the individual section. It wasn't fair to me or any others that actually do pay and maintain their own fleets of machines. I had no problem with them if they wish to compete group to group but group against individual I believed was/is unfair. The bunkering by this time I had come to accept as part of the challenge.

... meaning some will be able to bunker 6400 task per machine if they wish.

Please forgive my ignorance but, what is the problem for that?

Provided the host is fast enough to crunch all the data in time and the user take care not to report all the work at the same time to avoid swam the servers. Please enlight me, i can't understand.

The WoW is a Event, a time to celebrate, not a competition, yes ultra heavy users will certainly win, but they win everyday. We all need to applause them for their huge contribution to the project.

As some others i'm here to enjoy the moment, share some good time with some friends, etc. And if possible find the dam ET call!

My personal only goal beside that is to beat my own top mark in 2012 when i have >14 GPU's (a mix of 570, 590, 670 & 690 at the time) running 24/7.

Apparently because i not hide my hosts and develop a "spoofed bunkering host" that was noticed by someone and my intention was misunderstood starting all this exchanges of msg. For that i ask to forgive me. Will take more care in the future. Never imagine something like this could happening.

Long live to the WoW Event!

It just goes to show you, it doesn't matter what you do to entice more people to produce more work for SETI, some people will always complain. The concept of the Event itself is pure genius. In the months where some people would be turning off their machine due to the heat, hold a 'contest' that encourages people to place More machines into production and run their other machines even harder. Since work in process of validating counts, the Event actually starts Months in advance, just when people would start turning off their machines. Add to that, the work completed during the Event will be validating for Months, basically into the Fall. Genius. I really don't expect any problems different from a weekly Outage that carries on into the next day and results in a Hundred Thousand 'Bunkers' returning work. We are all Bunkers every Tuesday, the numbers are far fewer at the Start of the Event than after an extended Outage.

So now we are complaining about a few hundred people running their machines at full tilt instead of turning them off? I can think of many other things to waste my time on other than complaining about people producing more work for SETI when normally production would be down. The object is to produce more work, don't worry about the details.

Hi,i become answer from kleines grünes Männel

Hi.
Yes, "cheating" and also "cheating problem" are wrong wordings. Why?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheating
Cheating generally describes various actions designed to subvert rules in order to obtain unfair advantages. ... The rules infringed may be explicit, or they may be from an unwritten code of conduct based on morality, ethics or custom, making the identification of cheating conduct a potentially subjective process.

Explicit written rules on Wow! page? No.

Unwritten but custom? At every 3rd part challenge (I exclude challenges organized by project stuff itself like PG challenge) the usage of bunkering is allowed. Why? The organizers have no access to the user individual work unit data (when downloaded, when calculated, when credited). We (like all the others) only see that "uppsss, cumulated credits of user x are now y higher then one hour before", and so we say "Ok, user x gets y credits for this challenge". And that's why - Rules that can not be checked for compliance are not worth drafting. And there are several methods of bunkering (stop wu at 9x%, cancel network connection, edit hosts file, router config, Methode 6) - you can open your bunkers at start of the event or on 2nd day or fluently over days... It would be like a race of rabbit and hedgehog.

Unwritten but based on morality and ethics? As an agnostic I could say ... hmm, better not. That could go in the wrong direction. But the answer could be the aim of the Wow! event.

It is just a fun (!) event for those who are crunching s@h and also for those who crunched s@h. We often read "Crunching for so long, starting with s@h, but I 'forgot' this project." That's why we've made this event as a user event (with a necessary individual registration) to allow also no team users to participate, an obscure group formation based on the signs of the zodiac (others would simply say constellations, to take the primary focus away from the team rating), but of course the expected team and country ratings.

Greetings
kleines grünes Männel

PS: Yes, for deregistration pn to Terminator https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_user.php?userid=7779803 or use feedback form on our page.
PPS: Why the stats are not complete atm (diffs, yesterday, charts, user stats)? I've changed the basics of the page (as a part of the migration of whole team page to another system). And the real life has prevented me from completing the issues mentioned in time for the start of the "test phase".
PPPS: I hope this is reasonably understandable English.
PPPPS: I would answer for myself, but since I only within the 2 weeks Wow! in the year s@h calculate ...

Best regards

I could give a Rats Ass about spoofing my client, but it would be nice to have.
If not all can do this, Bunkering should not be aloud in wow, jmo.

All can do this, you just have to have the skills to do it. Bunkering is allowed as anyone that can figure out how to do it is allowed to do so by the rules of the WOW. No one is pulling your arm to make you participate. Don't want to do it, then don't. The WOW will continue either way.

I do believer its coffee time.

Myself, not interested in the spoofed client, as I have 2 x GPU's that just happy crunching along with what they get.

Bunkering, well thats been around since Adam was a boy, happens at Pentathalon time, it happens in Formula Boinc, it happens on the Boincstats challenges and its happens during WOW.

Mostly on projects that have a quorum of 2.

Not to sure with Primegrid challenges as they have the requirement of downloading and returning the workunit during the actual challenge for it to count.

But this is most likely the bleeding obvious to all that haunt these forums.

Well bring on the WOW, and happy crunching.

Cheers :-) :-)

Ah the old bunkering vs non bunkering. Heaven forbid, don't upset the bunker boys! LOL.
I'm entering this years event just for a bit of fun. Certianly not to win as that can't happen unless you bunker pure & simple. I'm personally against bunkering. It's not cheating but it also doesn't feel right to me. It feels more like a case of "If you can't beat them, join them" when it comes to bunkering.

The way I see it - at a competition (like running or cycling), all contestants line up equally at the start line and begin the race when the starters gun fires. Bunkering is a bit like blood doping. Loading up before the race for an advantage.

I've accepted that this isn't a competition (or it is but bunkering vs bunkering) it's just a bit of fun. And yes, groups like grcpool.... well I just ignore their existence as it's a managed pool, not an individual. Not even worth mentioned those who choose Gridcoin.

Goodluck to all.

I disagree. Pure power wins out over the bunkering.

W3Perl doesnt bunker, but always wins (last couple years) due to the amount of work being done every day. even bunkering can't catch him.

or the year Charles Long was participating doing a blistering 12-13M/day. you just can't compete with that.

I agree. You get an instant pop at the beginning of the contest to push your little saucer further up the lanes toward the LGM in front of your competitors. But over the length of the contest, pure daily output trumps all.
