I respect your opinion of course but, Cheating? IMHO No. Why? Because my hosts will automatically return all the WU crunched before their dead line. I just use a very, very large WU cache, not see where that's is against any project rule. So science is done in the same way.

<edit>I believe the only difference from the others who do the same is because i not hide my hosts.

The organisers actually encourage this.

It doesn't actually prevent the WU''s getting crunched and results getting returned and of course the large influx of results in the first hours will benefit everyone as all the wu's validated will in fact count for everyone who has any waiting.

However if you really wish to leave the event I suggest you PM Termimator he has helped me in the past.

Only the WUs crunched between aug. 15th 16: 00 UTC and aug.29 1600 UTC will count.

WUs crunched during the test/fine tuning period (before aug.15th 1600 UTC) don't count for the final tally.

I want no part of it...

That should actually be only WU's "returned" not crunched, unless the rules have changed as "bunkering" was certainly encouraged last year.

Which means work can be crunched in advance but not reported until after the event starts.

There are machines out there with caches in the thousands that are crunching work now, but will not report till after the event starts

I humbly stand corrected, alas :) :/

I'll ask Terminator if this specific problem has been adressed in the 2019 edition in case he can't see or discuss this specific point here in time...

Hi Terminator,

Has this cheating problem (work units bunkering) been fixed in the 2019 edition of the Wow! Event (as discussed in this thread at https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=84374&postid=2003745) ? if you could discuss with us this matter it would be great !

I am sorry for my wording of "Cheating" As long as it's in the rules I appoligise for my comments, was not intended to go on this long..

This is exactly the reason I won't participate in something like this. People crunching now and holding ALL completed WUs until the start of the event? We little guys stand absolutely no chance of winning in an event such as this, not going against users in the top 10 leader boards. What's the #1 user, W3Perl? No way could we compete. I would say that this event was designed specifically and only for the elite here. The rest of us don't count.

If it was fair, only WUs processed and returned DURING the event would count. As it is, it is not.

Have a great day! :)

Results out in the Field has been around 4.7 million for a while. Right now it is around 5.3 million, so I'm guessing there is half a million being bunkered. It will be interesting to see what happens, as it doesn't benefit anyone if the machine goes down, but that is alot of WU reporting and new WU downloading that will happen.

The contest awards medals not just for the individual, but also for Group and Team. Groups and Teams can comprise from 1 to 100 members. They dynamically change from year to year. So a little team like GPUUG with only 24 members can take on Seti Germany with 124 members. There is even more variability in Groups since you get to choose your own group at signup. Instead of joining the same Group as last year, you could for example choose a Group that has your friends in it. I personally just like to beat my prior year's standings for the sense of accomplishment it gives to me.

So yes W3Perl is likely to win the individual Gold Medal again this year, simply because of the normal size of his daily output, there can be changes and movements among the rest of the awards. Part of the fun is to see what new someone or Team or Group has brought to the contest this year. Always are surprises. That is the fun part that I enjoy.

Let me get this straight, we are concerned that people are "cheating" because they stock up on tasks in order to win an event that awards (to my understanding) a bragging rights trophy/medal of no monetary value? For a research project that searches for ET? What are we more concerned about here?

Perhaps if there are many of you that feel so strongly about this, perhaps you should band together and form a "non-cheaters" group for the event?

Hi Keith,

Keith, no offense, but you can enjoy it all you want, you have the horsepower to participate. I would get no fun out of it, I'd be a laughing stock with my 2 PCs, 3 Pis, laptop and tablet. I'm doing this for SETI, not for someone in Germany that decided to put together a contest for the elite crunchers here.

Have a great day! :)

Still having a hard time grasping the fact that people suddenly have this severe dislike of the contest which has been going on for 8 years now. Never heard a peep out of the general rabble until this year.
And no one is forcing you to participate or join the contest if you feel your crunching farm is inadequate to sign up for the contest. I mean . . . . really, what does a couple of hundred people enjoying a once yearly contest change anything with how the other 90,000 regular Seti members enjoy the project. There were participants last year that finished no work units or only a single one on their phone. But they still joined for the camaraderie and I'm sure enjoyed themselves.
