I have two Dell XPS 8930s running SETI (no other distributed program). Two days ago, BOTH PCs showed "intel_gpu GPU (missing)". Prior to this each was processing files intel_gpu in the 1.5 hour range. Except for intel_gpu, both systems continue to process SETI as before. PC#1: processor i7-8700, 3.20GHz, 16MB Ram, 12 threads, NVIDIA 1070. PC#2: processor i7-8700K, 3.70GHz, 12 threads, NVIDIA 1070. I have routinely updated both systems...Win10, plus security upgrades, plus bios updates, etc. Both PCs are running 24 hours per day for SETI. PC 1 is less productive because it is used for other tasks in regular hours; PC 2 is more productive because it ONLY runs for SETI, therefore has less overhead and housekeeping tasks. From day #1 both PCs ran SETI on 12 threads, ran NVIDIA, and ran intel_gpu. BOTH PCs stopped running intel_gpu on the same day. I can only think that an update, i.e., bios update did it. I have two older laptops running SETI AND Einstein and both of those are running intel_gpu just like always. HELP!! The loss of intel_gpu on two machines at approx. 1.5 hours per file production is considerable! I don't write code, so hopefully there is a simple solution to this. Thanks in advance. JB.
((Of course, I know there were comments long ago from some people that running intel_gpu actually reduces overall output. There are also comments about having NVIDIA GPUs process two or three files at the same time. So.....is what happened to me a blessing instead of loss of production??))

Drivers. Update your intel GPU drivers from Intel, not via Windows Update.

One thing though that we just learned, present Intel GPU drivers contain a lot more device extensions than BOINC can recognize and store, so it is possible it will fail detection on that. A new BOINC version will be tested for that this weekend. You can also install older drivers first.

Ageless: Thanks for your comments. I update Windows 10 via MS messages, and bios and driver updates via messages rec from Dell or HP. I think for now I will just sit it out and watch for BOINC updates. Same goes for NVIDIA.... I have researched from in here, from Dell, and from NVIDIA web site to try and understand all comments regarding which drivers I should use to maximize their SETI performance. (For example, to maximize NVIDIA use for SETI, I connect the PCs to the monitor via the video card, and not NVIDIA.) To say it is confusing, for a non-computer jock like me, is an understatement. I have also noticed a jump in work credits past couple of days and am trying to determine if this was because the intel_gpu is no longer working or if other things are at play. On my two old laptops, I am trying to work out the correct combination for SETI and Einstein so that may be having an effect also.

What I hope to make clear in this response to your message, is that comments from you and others are very much appreciated, because at least for me (and many others??) improving SETI performance is important to me, and not always a simple thing to achieve!

The other thing I would test is running without Intel gpu tasks on those two machines.

It is distinctly possible the whole system will be more productive without using the Intel gpu's for data crunching. I have seen at least 1 apparent exception to this rule but only specific testing will confirm it for your systems.

This also usually means setting your % of cpu's used to say 90% which usually speeds up the Boinc processing.

I might be another exception to that rule. Today I decided to run my iGPU again for giggles. Oddly enough, I think it is crunching them faster than CPU tasks, and I am not getting the thrashing problem that I have had before. The computer is very slow to use with the iGPU crunching, yet only suspends computation occasionally when I'm web browsing or using Office. I think I will only activate it when I am not going to be using it for long periods of time. I'm also running 100% of the CPU cores 100% of the time.

Of course, the computer also runs MW and Einstein, so that might affect things (thermals seem to be better when MW and E@H tasks are running than when S@H tasks run). Fingers crossed, the iGPU will continue to be a good choice going forward, but let me run it this way for awhile and see what happens.
