Can we really play games with quarantining?

Can we afford to allow the holiday industry to game against quarantining??...

Now that most of the last reporting period numbers are in and the world has passed 29.7 million cases and 938,000 deaths. The U.S. has passed 6,788,000 cases and is the 1st country to record over 200,000 deaths. India continues to blitz the field becoming the 2nd country to officially pass 500,000 cases. Spain has taken 9th spot in both passing 600,000 cases as well as 30,000 deaths, though I expect much of their 9,437 new cases for the period to be redistributed as historical cases again.

Costa Rica has moved up 2 spots into 52 place, Nepal into 54th, Czechia into 63rd while Libya moved past Bosnia and Herzegovina into 75th place as Denmark took 78th from Cameroon (another questionable numbers country) and Hungary moved past Zambia (yet another questionable numbers country) into 86th.

.Anyhow there are some more moves to be pulled as gaps are disappearing (some very fast) so stay tuned.

Well the last reporting period saw the world's total case tally pass 30 million and sadly 994,000 deaths. :-(

While the U.S. and Brazil continue to see who can be better than the other with both daily counts India just keeps on charging along with their daily case count and Spain is fighting hard to keep Argentina at bay. France has become the 13th country to pass 400,000 cases and has Iran in its sights as Iraq became the 18th country to pass 300,000 cases while Romania passed Kazakhstan to take 30th place and Morocco jumped over Oman into 37th.

Meanwhile the Netherlands has claimed 40th place from China with Sweden coming up fast, Nepal has replaced Singapore in 53rd as Uzbekistan claimed 56th spot from Algeria who now comes under threat from Switzerland and Palestine passed Serbia for 68th place.

Well that's the latest ups and downs, but more are in the winds, in the great COVID Race.

[edit] Yes I think that I've said a few times before that experts reckon that India's real death toll is 4 to 6 times higher than recorded and the reasons why. ;-)

So long as they stick to the plan people can cope with data coming out less frequently. The big worry is when the plan breaks or there is no plan and data appears at random intervals.

It will be interesting to see what happens during October in China - it's one time of year when they like to get together as families and friends from all over the country - great fun in a "normal" year, but somewhat worrying this time around.

For reasons only known to the lazy ones at the The Public Health Agency of Sweden, from September 14th, they only report our Covid-19 data Tuesdays-Fridays. They have never reported our data on weekends anyhow.
But then, what do I know about being lazy, since I retired at 64 :-)
Yes Sweden is doing some funny things with their reporting lately as the death count is in during the reporting period, but the daily case count doesn't get registered for many hours later (which is usually done while I'm asleep these days).

Anyhow, even without Sweden's daily case numbers (and a few others), and Spain hasn't thrown in an historic number that needs redistributing, it looks like the world has set a new daily case record in excess of 314,750 well passing 30.3 million cases while the death count passes 950,000. :-(

Peru has become the 5th country to pass the 750,000 case mark (but Colombia is still closing in on them) while Argentina became the 10th country to pass 600,000 cases (and is still currently closing in on Spain), France knocked Iran out of 12th place (and is now chasing Chile down) meanwhile Bangladesh (15th) has been hammered by monsoons, floods and landslides (east India and Myanmar are suffering the same problems) as well as putting up with over 1.2 million refugees fleeing racial tensions from Myanmar (who's numbers I'd take with a tipper load of salt) so their current numbers are well down on normal (plus they have the same reporting problems that India has, maybe even worse) and Iraq has passed Pakistan to take 17th spot (but Pakistan's real numbers could be even worse than Bangladesh's, but for many different reasons).

Anyhow Turkey, Italy and the Philippines are in a race to pass Pakistan and even if the Philippines doesn't get there 1st it'll wind up in 18th place soon enough (the Philippines also suffers the same problems as India, but on a slightly lesser scale) while Germany (22nd) looks to be picking up the pace a bit more to hold off Indonesia (with Israel and the Ukraine in their own race behind them) as the Netherlands provisionally takes 39th place from Sweden (they'll cement that at the end of this current reporting period anyway) and then there's a gaggle of countries in an "argy bargy" (though Honduras (currently 47th, is making its way through it) though Costa Rica (52nd) and Nepal (53rd) are closing in on that pack.

Well that's today's update done and tomorrow will produce a few more place changes, of that I'm sure.

I posted back here about the CDC changing their testing rules and if it was the cause of a sudden drop in numbers, well I guess that we'll soon find out as the CDC flips back to science.

CDC reverses course on testing for asymptomatic people who had Covid-19 contact.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now says that close contacts of people with Covid-19 should be tested, regardless of whether they have symptoms — reversing controversial recommendations it made last month, reportedly over the advice of agency scientists.

CDC's testing guidelines now bluntly counsel people who have been within six feet of a person "with documented SARS-CoV-2 infection" for at least 15 minutes to get screened. "You need a test," reads the latest version of the document, released Friday.

"Due to the significance of asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic transmission, this guidance further reinforces the need to test asymptomatic persons, including close contacts of a person with documented SARS-CoV-2 infection," the guidance also says.

The agency came under fire from public health experts last month when it altered its testing guidelines to stop promoting testing to most asymptomatic people with extended exposure to someone with a confirmed infection. It left the decision about whether to test such people to state and local public health officials and health providers.
I wonder just how many "Super Spreaders" were allowed to be out and about there multiplying in that time.

Well a good portion of Spain's recent high daily numbers has now been historically redistributed changing Sept 11's world daily case record of 310,676 increased to 316,239. In fact at least 45% of their latest numbers were involved, but they still displaced South Africa from 8th spot.

The U.S. has shown higher new daily case numbers of late, is that due to the CDC backflip? Or is that they don't won't India to knock them out of 1st spot before the elections?

Anyhow, Colombia has become the 6th country to surpass 750,000 cases while Argentina (10th) is on track to overtake South Africa by next weekend, Chile (11th) looks it'll succumb to France while the U.K. has got another breath of air and is striving to at least retain it's 14th place and it looks like Turkey will become the 19th country to pass 300,000 at the end of this current reporting period edging out Italy for the privilege (but they both still have the Philippines closing in on them fast).

Ecuador has taken 28th place from Qatar while Belgium (36th) is now striving to hold off Morocco and Czechia has passed Ghana to take 60th. Meanwhile Moldova took Kyrgyzstan out of 62nd as Azerbaijan took 64th spot from Afghanistan and Lebanon passed both Australia and El Salvador to take over 72nd place with Libya now in striking distance of Australia's 74th place.

Denmark (78th), Hungary (83rd), Greece (now up to 85th) and Croatia (87th) are all moving up the lower ranks and if anyone is wondering how our Kiwi cousins across the ditch are doing, well they're now down in 152nd amongst a lot of questionable company.

Seeing as most of the weekend's figures are now in the world's total case numbers have passed 31.4 million while deaths passed 969,000.

The U.S. now accounts for more than 7 million and 204,000 of those while India continues to gain on them with numbers of over 5.5 million and almost 89,000 deaths (officially that is) and Brazil passed 4.5 million and 137,000 deaths.

France took 11th place from Chile while Morocco passed both Egypt and Belgium to take over 34th spot and then Belgium passed Egypt for 35th as the Netherlands rolled Oman for 38th and Guatemala slipped past China into 41st so the U.A.E. followed suit into 42nd.

Poland replaced Japan in 44th while Czechia became the 57th country to pass 50,000 case, quickly followed by Switzerland and then Algeria, as Denmark removed South Korea from 77th place, but the big mover over the weekend was Tunisia who jumped from 99th into 92nd.

Stay tuned for more developments in the never ending race.

The Coronavirus headlines at many sites feature the news that the US death count has passed the 200,000 marker, twice the maximum number predicted by Donald in May, but according to the NYT, using figures from the CDC, the excess mortality for the period March until now is over 250,000.

The world has now passed 31.7 million cases and 974,000 deaths. :-(

Anyhow Colombia has replaced Peru in 5th place while Mexico became the 7th country to pass 700,000 cases as Spain closes in on them (a lot of Spain's 10,799 new cases are actually historical and will be redistributed later in the week, again, and we can expect that to continue over the week, again) and France (11th) continues to power on, but whether they'll make up the near on 200,000 cases required to mount an assault on South Africa (9th) and regain a "Top 10" spot will be a tough act (South Africa will shortly be passed by Argentina).

Iran (13th) is now being hunted down by Chile (12th) and the U.K. (14th) is trying to close the gap there as well while Iraq (17th) will pass Saudi Arabia within 48hrs before going after Bangladesh*, Turkey (19th) will do the same to Pakistan* and Italy has become the 20th country to pass 300,000 cases as the Philippines is set to become the 21st while Germany and Indonesia are in a race to see who follows next.

Kuwait has become the 37th country to pass 100,000 cases, but the Netherlands are gaining fast on them, meanwhile Guatemala (41st) and the U.A.E. (42nd) are in pursuit of Sweden as Ethiopia became the 48th country to pass 70,000 cases while slipping past Portugal who is now under threat from Venezuela and the race between Costa Rica (51st) and Nepal (52nd) looks to be tipping in Nepal's favour as they both pass Bahrain.

Czechia has passed Uzbekistan to takeover 57th place as Austria replaces Afghanistan* in 65th and Hungary replaces the Ivory Coast* for 80th spot.

Anyhow that's enough for today.

* denotes numbers that I'd take with a bucket of salt.

Of course it's not dangerous, so far, it has only killed more people in the US than Americans killed in battle during the five most recent wars combined: the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Iraq War, the War in Afghanistan and the Persian Gulf War.
