There is some questioning about these tests that are being proposed.
As I understand it, some of the tests need trained specialists to perform the analysis and are not that rapid, and others are only meant to be used on people already showing symptoms, using them on others is just a waste of limited resources.

During the last reporting period the worlds case total has passed 48.4 million while deaths passed 1,230,000 with a new daily record there of over 9,000 being reported. The U.S. continues to lead the way with another daily case record of over 108,000 taking their total past 9.8 million as deaths fast approach 240,000 (they fell just 171 short of that mark). India is still cruising along in a clear 2nd with over 8.3 million cases and over 124,000 death while Brazil holds a safe 3rd with over 5.5 million cases and over 161,000 deaths. As Russia fast approaches 1.7 million cases (along with over 29,200 deaths) France is still closing in fast on them with them passing 1.54 million cases (along with over 38,600 deaths. Spain is still maintaining a safe 6th place with over 1.35 million cases while passing 38,000 deaths as Argentina passed 1.2 million cases along with just over 32,500 deaths, but Colombia's 8th spot (with over 1.1 million cases and 32,000 deaths) is now under immediate threat from the U.K. as they're just 9,000 cases behind them (along with over 47,700 deaths). Mexico rounds out the top 10 with 938,400 cases and remaining in 4th spot by deaths with that total over 92,500 now.

Europe's case total has just passed 11 million as they continue to close in on North America's 2nd spot whose tally has just passed 11,681,000. Anyhow let's head back down the list.

Lithuania is now up to 97th place, just behind Luxembourg, while Montenegro didn't take kindly to Luxembourg passing them so they decided to pull their finger out and not only retook the place back from Luxembourg, but also dumped the Ivory Coast out of 94th spot. Croatia has moved up to 76th place and is now set to pass Myanmar, Bulgaria has shot up to 65th spot while Slovakia jumped into 63rd, Hungary jumped into 57th as Jordan took over 56th, Austria has jumped up into 44th and Sweden has jumped back up into 38th place.

Switzerland is now up to 33rd place while Czechia moved into 26th as Poland leapt into 19th spot and Italy has taken hold of 12th place, but they have a big gap to close before they can threaten Peru.

Meanwhile a lot of countries took 1 step forward only to be forced 1 or 2 steps backwards, but 1 thing is for sure and that's that this mad race will continue on.

This one is a bit of an outlier, but it shows that we have to be properly (scientifically) vigilant.

Denmark to cull up to 17 million mink amid coronavirus fears

As many as 17 million minks are to be culled in Denmark after a mutated version of the coronavirus that can spread to humans was detected on mink farms.
A government report said the mutated virus had been found to weaken the body's ability to form antibodies, potentially making the current vaccines under development for Covid-19 ineffective.

That one is a very good catch!

We also need our politicians to heed scientific advice over and above their political 'concerns'...

... As evidenced in the UK for our now second round of desperate 'lockdown' to avoid overwhelming our health service.

(Cue Monty Python...)

For just one very local example, for a shop worker where I called in for some supplies earlier today:

She was suffering tiredness and general aches and pains, but no fever. Conscientiously she went to be tested for COVID, and showed a positive.

From that, she never developed any fever or cough but was left totally exhausted for a few days...

Three weeks later and:

    She has no sense of smell;
    She has only a vague sense of taste and is very unhappy that she can't enjoy food;
And she seems to now be partially deaf.

Otherwise, she looks to have recovered...

She's a very fit and healthy woman in her mid-20s.

Here's hoping she makes a full recovery!

Stay safe folks...

Well it final happened in the last reporting period, the world set a new daily case that broke the 600,000 barrier with just over 608,000 being reported so far and once Sweden finally comes clean with their daily numbers that will pass 610,000, so that takes the world's total numbers past 49 million while deaths pass 1,238,800. :-(

The U.S. also busted it's daily case count record by reporting over 118,200 new cases taking their total past 9.9 million infections and are likely to become the 1st country to pass 10 million during this current reporting period, they also passed 240,950 deaths. Texas will also become the 1st U.S. state to break the 1 million barrier during this same period. :-O

France also put in a record breaking day with over 58,000 new cases and passing 1.6 million cases (as Russia just passed 1.7 million with a daily count of 19,400) while the U.K. put in another big day to fly past Colombia into 8th spot as Italy also set itself a new daily case record of over 34,500 while also becoming the 12th country to pass 800,000 infections. Germany also set its own new daily record of over 21,750 new cases while also becoming the 15th country to pass 600,000 infections. :-(

In the regional stakes Europe (3rd spot) has passed 11,299,600 infections with a daily case count of over 314,000 (so far) and closing in fast on North America whose tally has just passed 11,800,000 with a daily count of just under 131,000.

Luxembourg passed the Ivory Coast for 95th place, Greece and Georgia passed Ghana to take over 81st and 82nd respectively, Bosnia and Herzegovina removed Palestine from 77th spot and now has their sights set on Myanmar who has their sights sets on Singapore who was just taken out of 74th spot by Croatia while Azerbaijan slipped past Algeria for 71st place. Tunisia jumped both Libya and Paraguay into 65th place, Slovakia and Bulgaria slipped past Uzbekistan into 62nd and 63rd spots respectively while Jordan and Hungry both jumped over Venezuela into 55th and 56th spots as Armenia jumped both Ethiopia and Honduras into 52nd place.

Austria leapt over both the Dominican Republic and Kuwait into 42nd place, Sweden (when their numbers finally arrived) should remove Bolivia from 37th while Switzerland became the 33rd country to pass 200,000 cases, Czechia leapt over the Netherlands, Turkey and the Philippines to take over 23rd place while the Netherlands followed into 24th as the Ukraine replaced Indonesia in 20th spot.

Anyhow that'll do for this latest update. ;-)

The world's total case count has just passed 50 million while deaths passed 1,253,500 with many countries breaking daily records with the bulk of those coming from Europe. :-O

Yesterday's reporting period saw 623,277 new cases being recorded and Sweden, plus a few other countries, havn't supplied their numbers as yet (lazy blighters they are) with the U.S. continuing to surpass itself by recording a daily count of 132,540, but even though North America has just passed 12 million cases Europe is closing in fast on them just passing 11.8 million.

Meanwhile that little U.S. state of West Virginia beat South Korea in passing Australia's case count (currently at 27,652) with South Korea still 368 behind so we can keep 89th place for a bit longer, but South Korea won't be enjoying 89th spot for long when they do get it if a few other European countries have their way.

Anyhow, I'll be back. ;-)

Fake news, Wiggo. There's no Covid-19 in Sweden. SARS-CoV-2 can not survive in a socialistic/communistic country.
Look at North Korea, no SARS-CoV-2 there either.
Not when some can enjoy a 4 day weekend instead it seems. ;-) :-D

Well not at all.

There's also Rum nights, Sipping Whiskey nights, Black Sambuca nights, Vodka nights and even the occasional Bourbon night here and there, but only when the rum runs out, as well as Nights Off. :-D

Message 2060891 - Posted: 8 Nov 2020, 1:53:09 UTC

While some countries like Spain, Switzerland and a few others go into their regular weekend blackouts things are getting very interesting in the world's COVID race.

Since my last update little Montenegro and just as little Luxembourg passed Cameroon with Luxembourg taking the lead again in their little race, but along came Lithuania who leapt over all 3 (plus the Ivory Coast) to take up 93rd place and now has Albania targeted as their next victim. Georgia and Greece both hurdled Denmark in their personal race to take up 80th and 81st spots as they take off after Palestine to try to beat them in passing Singapore (78th) while Bosnia and Herzegovina jumped past both Singapore and Myanmar into 75th as Serbia added Palestine to that list to land in 76th and now have Bosnia and Herzegovina, Algeria as well as Kenya (who just took 73rd spot from Algeria) in their sights.

Yes this race is getting murky now, Azerbaijan passed Kyrgyzstan, but still remain in 71st place as Croatia leapt from 74th spot and into 69th with Ireland being their next target, Tunisia removed Uzbekistan from 64th place, then Armenia became the 52nd country to pass 100,000 cases followed by Jordan and then Hungary, but Hungry moved into 52nd place as Jordan took over 53rd which now puts Belarus, Japan (who just regained 50th place from Belarus) as well as Egypt's positions under direct threat followed by a blood bath as Guatemala, Kazakhstan, Costa Rica as well as Oman will soon follow them (in other words, Hungry is very hungry). Well I hope that I got all that straight.

Austria has provisionally removed Sweden from 37th place, but by the time Sweden does get their numbers in Austria would've cemented that spot, Portugal kicked Ecuador out of 35th and are now off after Nepal while Czechia and the Netherlands become the 23rd and 24th countries to pass 400,000 cases in their mad dash for a top 20 spot. Poland zipped past both Iraq and Chile to take over 16th place while becoming the 17th country to pass 500,000 cases, they also join in on a race with Germany and Iran to see who can take South Africa out of 13th spot, Italy became the 12th country to pass 900,000 infections and are now in striking distance of Peru as they continue breaking their own records (Mexico will follow shortly after Peru).

The U.K. continues its mad dash in trying to chase Argentina down while France is going insane smashing P.B.'s left, right and center with a 86,852 new case day blasting them past 1.7 million cases and to within 5K of blowing Russia right out of 4th spot while becoming the 7th country to pass 40,000 reported deaths, but you have to give it to the U.S.A. as they just don't know when to quit. Even though all their numbers arn't in yet for the last reporting period they've put in another 125K new case day and by the time that they do come in the U.S. won't fall to far short of 10.2 million infections being recorded and another day of over 1K deaths has taken that morbid total past 243,250.

Once the numbers catch up the last reporting period will be another day with well over 600,000 new cases being reported, but ATM the last reporting period finished with a world total case count of at least 50,247,297 along with a death count of at least 1,255,628. :-(

When will this insane madness stop?

... When will this insane madness stop?

Indeed... And we are not yet into the northern winter... Will people huddling in enclosed spaces for warmth help reduce the spread (reduced activities/socializing/mingling) or, contrarily because of that, increase the spread due to the expected greater use of heated reduced ventilation enclosed spaces...?

So why has France so badly lost the plot?

Meanwhile, the random survey infection numbers for the UK suggest we have about 50,000 presently infected, which is about x2 that reported by the failed Test 'n' Trace.

And the blanket "test everyone" test/experiment in Liverpool has already hit problems with too few physical testing areas. That number is quickly being doubled to try to get everyone tested...

Covid: Liverpool testing trial sites doubled after queues on first day

All good questions Martin, but who can really say?

I've always maintained (and still do) that if all things were equal then this page, https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries, would look more like this one, https://www.worldometers.info/world-population/population-by-country/, but then there are other factors that have to be accounted for.

How rich or poor that they are, how good or bad their government and supporting structures are, how good or bad are their internal public support infrastructures and health systems are, and mostly the mindset of those populations.

Some blame population densities, but there are countries with higher densities than the U.K. and France that are way down the list (Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Sri Lanka and Vietnam instantly come to my mind) so that doesn't hold a great deal of weight.

Here's 2 lists on population densities, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_and_dependencies_by_population_density#Density_of_the_most_populous_countries, and, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_and_dependencies_by_population_density#Density_of_the_most_populous_countries (the 2nd 1 I find the quicker to look up), but I do find it offensive that we here are listed so far down them. Don't people realise that basically 80% of Australia is basically uninhabitable? And that there are cattle and sheep stations out there that are bigger than a lot of European countries and U.S. states, but only have about a dozen or so people on them. You can only live where there is water and that would improve our ranking greatly as well. :-D

And on the main the people in those countries are happy to carry on under their current restricted circumstances. Sadly there are others in other countries that go out protesting and rioting against restrictions or just going on as if nothing is happening and in doing so just make matters so much worse for themselves as well as combining that with governments that either denied that there was a problem and/or did nothing good to really prevent the spread of it. Then there were those throwing "super spreader events" for their minions in the hope of being reelected.

Others just opened up for "business as usual" far too soon before they even had a proper handle on the problem to start with.

There are likely many other factors that can also be thrown in as well, but one thing that will come out of this is that people, governments and surviving companies will have to learn to live without carrying so much debt as they have. Another thing to learn is to stop stressing out wild animals by either destroying their habit and polluting the environment as well as stopping the consumption of smoked "bush meat".

But in the end we all have to shoulder some of the blame in 1 way or another and only all of us working as 1 can do something to help prevent this happening again.

Covid-19 vaccine candidate is 90% effective, says manufacturer
Interim analysis of vaccine by Pfizer/BioNTech far exceeds expectations of most experts

A vaccine against Covid-19 is in sight, with the announcement of the first interim results in large-scale trials showing the Pfizer/BioNTech candidate is 90% effective, according to the manufacturers, whose analysis shows a much better performance than most experts had hoped for.

The high percentage of those protected makes the findings compelling. Regulators have said they would approve a vaccine that is just 50% effective – protecting half those who get it. The company says there have been no serious side-effects.

“Today is a great day for science and humanity. The first set of results from our phase 3 Covid-19 vaccine trial provides the initial evidence of our vaccine’s ability to prevent Covid-19,” said Dr Albert Bourla, the Pfizer chairman and CEO.

“We are reaching this critical milestone in our vaccine development program at a time when the world needs it most with infection rates setting new records, hospitals nearing over-capacity and economies struggling to reopen.”

Thanks for that, good find.

Sadly, Trump has inadvertently speeded the clinical trials to gain earlier results:

... To confirm its efficacy rate, Pfizer said it will continue the trial until there are 164 Covid-19 cases among participants in vaccinated and non-vaccinated groups. Given the recent spike in US infection rates, that number could be reached by early December...

Note carefully for some good healthy caution:

... “I congratulate the brilliant women and men who helped produce this breakthrough and to give us so much cause for hope,” the US president-elect, Joe Biden, said. “It is also important to understand that the end of the battle against Covid-19 is still months away … a mask remains a more potent weapon against the virus than a vaccine. Today’s news does not change this urgent reality.”...
