Message 2058543 - Posted: 7 Oct 2020, 9:43:50 UTC - in response to Message 2058536.

Total admission of total confusion of ancient units! (In feeble feebril defense, there usually has to be a magical "12" in the old units somewhere... ;-) )
12 feet is two fathoms. Were you ever a sailor?
Or horse racing in which 12 furlongs equals 1.5 miles (or 2.41km which here is classed as a 2400 metre race).

Personally I'll feel better off when all these non metric weights and measures are annihilated for the good and safety of all, but my personal tape measures are still all dual imperial/metric jobs and when advising on renovations on houses built here between 1975 and 1990 I'll use my stud finder to determine what metric was used during construction.

Pre 1970 we were taught imperial along with all the U.S. short variations, but from 1970 the metric standard was also taught in our schools here along with how to convert imperial or U.S. weights and measures to metric until around 1980 (IIRC) when only metric took over.

Maybe we should start a thread here on just this matter and the implications.

Cheers.

For Trump's religious right base, you'll probably have to specify that in cubits.

Could this be why the death rate in the U.S. is so high?
"Major hospitals throughout the country have private spaces for celebrities, the super-rich and the influential, patients who want to be shielded from the public and just may make a large donation if they are happy with their care."
U.S. heathcare
"While it may be correct to say the United States has some of the best healthcare services in the world, it is not accessible to all Americans equally," says Professor Peters.

Yes, I've done a lot of yachting, including with an old analog echo sounder that had two ranges[*]: feet and fathoms.

However, on this occasion, I think more likely I'd made the wrong mental leap of 12-inches-inna-foot and wishing to convert metres into feet and skipping all the bits about actually calculating anything!

A simple memory table look-up is a lot faster than actually doing any arithmetic! :-)

All in good haste. And very good that some people actually do read the numbers!

Stay safe!
Martin

[*]: The echo sounder device was an ultrasonic pinger, which in its day was 'high tech'. The display unit was a backlit spinning disk with a radial slot near the edge. There were graduation marks on the case. Depth under the pinger was indicated by how far the disk had rotated by the time the backlight was flashed on according to the delay and strength of the return echo. The disk had two spin speeds: one (slow) to read off fathoms; the second (x12 faster) to read off feet. Note that depth as marked on the charts was in reality indicated depth + draft for the pinger! When the depth indication flash, instead of being a nice clear line, instead broadened or even smeared out to illuminate the entire disk, you then knew you'd grounded! You automatically knew what scale was in use by the pitch of the whir of the display disk... The sounder was also too many years too old and you were also 6th-sense alert to when it wasn't pinging and spinning! All good fun in coastal sea fog lining up between sand banks to find the channel back into port...

... consider themselves IT experts, fit to manage multi-million projects. Er no!!...

... know MsOfice pretty well, but it has its limitations...

The foul-up of using a 16000 entries limited ".xls" file format rather than the much more accommodating usually default ".xlsx" or even ".ods" suggests some other worrying follow-on aspects:

  • Really? No end-to-end data checks?
  • Is the data actually being sent insecurely as an email attachment, unencrypted, and likely via a 3rd-party 'cloud' and 3rd-party 'antivirus checks'?

Unfortunately, due to years of abuse in UK education teaching Microsoft products, for free, and only Microsoft products as though that was somehow "Information and Communication/Computer Technology", we have far too many office workers who only know the word of Microsoft...

Especially so for the inevitably untrained and overly ignorantly proud Management...

Oh what a fine mess?

At least we got to hear of some of the failure details for this one instance of the UK Track-n-Trace without the need for a Freedom of Information hit.

And the fix is?...

Stay safe!

Message 2058611 - Posted: 8 Oct 2020, 2:55:00 UTC

The world's total case number now exceeds 36,380,000 and passes 1,060,000 deaths while the U.S. now accounts for over 7,776,000 of those cases and over 216,700 deaths as India passes 6,832,000 cases and over 105,550 deaths (officially known of anyway) , Brazil now has become the 3rd country to pass 5,000,000 cases and has recorded over 148,300 deaths and Russia is continuing to pick up the pace passing 1,248,600 cases and 21,800 deaths (supposedly). Then comes the 5 countries that make up the Spanish Inquisition group, Colombia, Spain, Argentina has moved past Peru while Mexico drags the chain and South Africa continues to round out the top 10 (but France will change that over the weekend).

I'll now head back down to the down the list. Georgia passed Mozambique for 105th place while Malaysia took 95th from Sudan, Jordan has jumped both North Macedonia and the Ivory Coast into 85th place as Myanmar leapt over Cameroon and Greece to takeover 82nd. Meanwhile Tunisia has passed South Korea into 79th spot as Ireland reclaimed 70th place from Afghanistan and Lebanon moved into 64th past Kyrgyzstan.

Moldova moved past Singapore into 57th place while Ethiopia took 51st from Honduras as Czechia put in a big effort to take Nepal out of 44th place. Kuwait moved past Kazakhstan into 36th spot, but Poland will not let them enjoy that for very long, the Philippines replaced Turkey in 19th place and that's about it for now. ;-)

But the NHS is staffed by Doctors, Surgeons, and Nurses, trained to treat sick and ill people. What do they know, or are expected to know about IT? The same with Civil Service Dept's. They are just overpaid clerks and senior clerks.

I think you grossly underestimate the number of non-medical staff in the NHS these days, many of whom are little more than pen-pushers employed to waste budgets that should be going to the medical staff.

(I include the likes of pharmacists, ambulance crew, the various **** therapists, cleaners & porters in "medical" as they are essential for patient well being)

Hey, for 12 years as a NATO civilian and as far as the UK was concerned I was effectively a civil servant, and I wasn't overpaid, although I did have some extra benefits during that time. What I did get at the end was a very good pension.

After 3 massive reporting days the world's total case count has passed 37,450,000 and deaths have passed 1,077,200. The U.S. is pushing ahead with another 50K+ new case day as the clock up over 7,944,000 with over 219,000 deaths (it looks like they're determined to try and hold India off). India meanwhile has clocked up over 7,051,500 infections along with passing 108,300 deaths (that are known of anyway) while Brazil continues on with over 5,091,800 cases and over 150,000 deaths. Russia continues to pick up their pace passing 1,285,000 infections with over 22,450 deaths. Then comes the 5 Spanish Inquisition countries, but I'll come back to them in a bit as I dive back down the list.

Georgia has made it into 100th place while Slovakia moved up to 89th, Jordan has made it into 83rd spot as Myanmar takes over 80th, Tunisia has jumped up into 76th and Hungry has taken over 73rd place. Meanwhile Ireland is fighting back by jumping back into 69th place as Lebanon takes over 63rd, Austria is also picking up the pace while moving back into 61st and Moldova has made it into 55th spot.

Costa Rica passed China to take 47th position quickly followed by Portugal into 48th, the U.A.E. moved past both Oman and Egypt and then Nepal came along and jump the lot of them into 40th place. Czechia is now into 37th place as Poland moves into 34th while Belgium has moved up to 30th and looks to get involved with Morocco's and Romania's little race. Indonesia passed Pakistan taking over 21st spot and Germany followed them back into 22nd as they pick up the pace again, Italy took 17th place from Saudi Arabia as Iraq became the 15th country to pass 400,000 cases.

France looks to have refilled the kettle on the run as they reclaimed 10th spot from South Africa and blasted past 700,000 cases while Mexico became the last of the Spanish Inquisition to pass 800,000 cases while at the head of the pack Colombia became the 5th country to pass 900,000 cases. Spain maybe the next to pass that mark, but due to their having to have weekends off Argentina might beat them to it (or they won't be very far behind). But Colombia's position at the head of the pack is under threat from both Spain and Argentina.

Anyhow I'll report back later with more updates in the great COVID race.

It looks like Slovenia (currently 111th) will be the next country to enter the top 100 while Finland made it to 98th place, before Georgia passes them, and Malaysia has made it into 93rd. Croatia passed the Ivory Coast taking over 87th place as Jordan passed South Korea taking up 81st while Myanmar has claimed 79th spot from Australia and Tunisia removed Denmark from 75th place. Ireland passed Azerbaijan, but Libya jumped over both to take up 68th place, Lebanon moves up to 62nd spot displacing Algeria while Belarus jumped over Venezuela and Honduras into 51st position and Oman passed Egypt to take over 42nd spot.

Meanwhile Belgium leapt over both Morocco and Romania to take up 28th place as the Philippines passed Saudi Arabia into 18th while Iran became the 13th country to pass 500,000 infections and the U.K became the 12th to pass 600,000. Tomorrow will tell where Spain lands (unless there's a public holiday) in relation to Colombia and Argentina.

That's it for today, but there'll be more to come tomorrow when those slacko countries (that don't like working on weekends) finally report, and then we'll have to wait another day for those extra slacko (or is it just extra lazy?) countries (*cough* Sweden *cough*) to catch up.

One possible solution your friend's dilemma is to take advantage of the date used by different (Christian) cultures for their "Christmas" dinner - from memory the spread is over a two week period, so plenty of time to do three separate feasts for smaller gatherings (provided the impending lockdowns don't get in the way and stop all travel to far-flung parts of the UK, or from abroad).

Or do what the Scotts do, start their winter celebrations at the end of November (St.Andrew's day) and carry on until the end of January (Burn's birthday). Then February is lost in the resultant over-indulgence induced stupor ;-)

Late p.s. The front page of the Mail today says that there will be 4-week lockdowns imposed and tells the government no, it will harm the economy and is in nobody's interests. But Boris is faced with mounting evidence that the rise in infections is now exponential, i.e. the rate of increase is increasing. He is damned if he does, and damned if he doesn't. The popular press is not exactly being very helpful.
Our state of Victoria has proved that 3 months of lockdown isn't enough, but at least your paltry and by far 2 week crap has been thrown out though even 4 weeks is no where near enough for effective control.

Time and time again, people come in with no masks and no social distancing. Mainly the under 50's age group it seems. People 50 and over simply do what the government has advised.
You are joking arn't you? Or are you just trying to place the blame elsewhere? Stats here prove you wrong as it's 50+ group here that are the worst offenders.

Get a grip of yourself Chris and stop your usual blaming of younger people for today's problems when in fact it's people of our age that are the biggest problem ATM (just look at that idiot Donny for a prime example). ;-)

From my random and totally uncontrolled observations I would suggest that the age distribution of not wearing masks is fairly flat, maybe with a peak in the 30-50 age range during the week. But on a weekend evening the peak is certainly in a lower age group, and predominantly female - excuse I heard being screamed last weekend was "IT wrecks my makeup" (I was in my car waiting at traffic lights, windows and radio up) I never heard what the cop thought of this as an excuse because the lights changed and I was "Way out of Dodge".

Just a reminder - due to the amount of name calling and abuse that has gone on in these threads we generally don't want to see individual names (or alternative monica) being used in the politics forum. So, from here on, just address the comments in the post, but not using the poster's name.

In my neck of the woods since March I've found that practically all those over 60 have been taking precautions which is understandable I suppose.
What I have found is that at least 1 in four* people take precautions with the rest having an attitude problem. The sad thing is that most of those have been female & of all ages.
*IMO, a fairly accurate estimation.

I'm no scientist or doctor but again IMO & looking at it from a logistical point of view, we will be paying for this shambles for many a year to come.
It could have been handled much better using just one parameter.
Common sense.

In which case I hope that you won't mind if I forward your post to the Governor of Victoria, as I am sure that she would welcome your opinion.
You could send that to the Queen's mouthpiece for that state, but the state Premier, Danial Andrews, might be more interested in it as he actually runs that state.

Tell me, are all Aussies as rude as you or is it something specific to Victoria?
I wouldn't know as I don't live down there, but they do do things a bit differently there than the rest of the country which is why that state has recorded 20,306 cases and 811 deaths out of this country's current totals of 27,298 and 899. ;-)

On a day the the world's total case tally passed 38 million and 1,085,000 deaths the U.S. passed 8 million infections while passing 220,000 deaths. :-O

Georgia passed Finland to take 98th place, Malaysia has jumped into 91st, Slovakia moved into 88th, Bulgaria took over 82nd, Paraguay became the 64th country to pass 50,000 infections, Switzerland finally gave up its numbers which propelled them back into 55th place, Nepal moved up to 39th, Czechia jumped into 35th and Poland moved up into 33rd spot.

Spain came clean with their weekend numbers which made them the 6th country to pass 900,000 cases, but they still can't get their act together to keep up with their numbers being correct, and Argentina became the 7th to pass that mark.

There are still some missing numbers, but they'll just have to wait for my next update.

The "nice a gentle" approach to fining non-wearers sends a very mixed message - so many cases of people not wearing masks and not being fined the £200 just doesn't get that part of the message across. Hit them with £1k fine (first offence), doubling with each subsequent fine to say £16k; a few of those will grab the idiots' attention and hopefully pursued other non-wearers of the error of their ways.
