Me thinks that there's a good reason behind why Berenson is a "former New York Times reporter". ;-)

Has the UK gone COVID rapidly exponential?...

Or just a 'small blip'?

Covid-19: Daily reported UK cases rise by a quarter
wrote:
... Covid-19 cases has risen by a quarter [over the last 24 hours], according to the latest UK government figures.

There have been 6,178 coronavirus cases in the UK in the last 24 hours, up 1,252 since Tuesday, and 37 deaths...

Even more worryingly, note that those figures are in effect a significant number of days 'behind the curve' due to the incubation period, a few days for people to feel ill enough to get checked, and then the one or two days for the results to be reported...

Here really is hoping this is a anomalous 'blip'.

However, considering how lax our UK precautions lapsed into, and that we're only today gaining some half-hearted measures to slow the spread, I'm guessing this is going to be expensive... Both socially and economically.

The UK has had a world of examples predicting this second exponential explosion... Especially with the recent examples for France and Spain just 'next door'! Why has there been no anticipation to avert death and disruption?

Why-o-why are politicians oblivious to the far healthier options of prevention?

The economy - only the next quarter matters.

In that case, our only hope lies with the fact that infection -> death completes within a financial quarter so as to give some political impetus for keeping at least some of us still alive and still spending for the next quarter!

The world's case tally has now passed 32.4 million while deaths have passed 987,000. :-(

We'll start towards the bottom today with Myanmar* leaping into 104th spot as Montenegro passed Tajikistan* to take 99th place while Tunisia* has moved into 91st spot and is now eyeing Norway up, Croatia is now up to 86th with Greece moving into 84th and Bulgaria into 81st while Hungary is up into 79th place.

Palestine moved past Kenya* to take 67th while Moldova shifted into 60th as Czechia jumped into 54th, Costa Rica (51st) and Nepal (52nd) are still in their tight race for Venezuela (Portugal and Ethiopia* are also in their sights). The U.A.E. took 41st from Guatemala*, Sweden became the 40th country to pass 90,000 cases as the Netherlands leapt past both Kuwait and Egypt to takeover 36th place while Morocco jumped Panama* for 32nd (and narrowly missing out on taking out the Dominican Republic at the same time) and Israel is putting in some big numbers to become 24th country to pass 200,000 cases (they've closed businesses down and severely restricted peoples' movement, but the silly buggers have left places of worship unrestricted and these places are where most of the locally acquired cases are coming from).

Meanwhile Turkey took 19th place from Pakistan*, Iraq removed Saudi Arabia from 16th while Argentina replaced South Africa in 9th and Spain became the country to pass 700,000 cases. Other than that India* is still powering along, though their numbers are slightly down this week but that could have a lot to do with eastern India suffering monsoon rains and landslides, but the U.S. is slowing the rate at which they're closing in at now.

* denotes numbers that I'd take with a bucket of salt.

Well the world total case tally has passed 32.75 million while deaths fell just short of 993,000 (1 million isn't far away now).

Myanmar* has now leapt past both Haiti and Gabon into 102nd place as Montenegro took 98th spot from French Guiana while Tunisia* leapt over Norway and Sudan* into 89th and Lebanon* moved into 71st place passing Serbia with Ireland clearly in their sights.

Meanwhile Costa Rica became the 51st country to pass 70,000 cases closely followed by Nepal while Belgium didn't even blink as they went past Kazakhstan into 34th place as Morocco moved into 31st passing the Dominican Republic and Canada became the 26th country to pass 150,000 cases as they pick up the pace a bit (not that their position is under any current threat, then comes a strung out pack.

Anyhow the U.K. (14th) is distancing itself from 1 pack while slowly catching up to the tail end of the next as France becomes the 11th country to pass a half a million cases in their quest to hunt down South Africa, but will that have stamina to close that gap?

Now here's something that I just realised (yes, I can be a bit slow at times), spots 5 to 9 are all old Spanish colonies with the exception of 7th place being Spain itself. Is there a pattern here?

Russia* (currently a safe 4th) has begun to pick up its pace recently (are they worried about the Spanish Inquisition behind them?), meanwhile Brazil* sits in a very isolated 3rd place as India (2nd) continues to close the gap to the U.S. (5.9 million vs. 7.2 million) who is also picking up the pace (they certainly seem to want to go to the elections still in 1st place).

Now to the really bad list and the question of, will the U.S pass 210,000 deaths by the end of their weekend?

Brazil* has passed 140,000 recored deaths, India* is on track to officially pass 100,000 this coming week, Mexico* became the 4th country to pass 75,000, the U.K followed by Italy, Peru, France, Spain and Iran round out the "Top 10" while Colombia became the 11th country to pass 25,000 deaths with Russia* 12th to pass 20,000.

Anyhow that's enough of the action for today.

* denotes numbers that I'd take with a bucket of salt.

Over the last reporting period (though it's not complete as yet) the world's case count passed 33 million and 998,000 deaths.

The U.S. continues to get its case numbers up India has cut their lead down to just 1.3 million now (estimate 30 days to do that in at current rates) while Colombia has become the 5th country to pass 800,000 cases quickly followed by Peru as Argentina passed 700,000 and at their current rate both Mexico and Spain chances of holding their positions are numbered in days.

Meanwhile the Philippines has become the 21st member of the 300,000 club, Ecuador passed Bolivia to take 27th spot as Belgium leapt over Panama and the Dominican Republic to take over 32nd while the Netherlands overtook Kazakhstan for 35th, Kuwait knocked Egypt out of 37th and Poland removed China from 43rd place.

Portugal passed Ethiopia for 48th place, Costa Rica took 50th from Venezuela while Moldova became the 60th country to pass 50,000 case, Lebanon has taken 70th from Ireland as Montenegro passed Maldives into 97th and Myanmar leapt over Finland, Tajikistan and French Guiana into 99th place.

2 other countries to keep and eye on are Slovakia (currently 105th) and Jordan (107th) who have joined the end of a large closely knit pack and will be quickly moving through it.

Stay tuned for more updates on the race of the century.

Now that the numbers are more or less up to date after the weekend the world's total case count has passed 3.8 million and 1,012,000 deaths while the U.S. passes 7.4 million and 210,000 with India getting ever closer in passing 6.2million and 97,000 meanwhile Brazil and Russia are safe enough in their positions. Now I'll head to the other end where the action is.

Jordan has jumped into 100th place as Myanmar does the same into 93rd and Tunisia followed suit into 85th. Greece moved into 83rd place while Hungary moved past South Korea into 78th as Denmark hopped into 75th past Bosnia / Herzegovina and Australia, Bosnia / Herzegovina then passed Australia to take 76th and leaving Australia exposed to Hungry.

Meanwhile Libya passed Serbia to takeover 72nd place and now has Ireland in their sights, Paraguay made a move on Afghanistan into 66th and then Palestine followed suit into 67th while Moldova moved into 59th past Algeria. Costa Rica passed Ethiopia for 49th spot, but then Nepal decided to pass both of them as well as Portugal and Honduras into 47th place.

The U.A.E. took 40th place from Sweden as the Netherlands removed Belgium from 37th place while the Ukraine became the 25th country to pass 200,000 cases, Pakistan was taken out of 19th by Italy who is now entering a race with Turkey to see who'll get to Saudi Arabia first. The U.K. (still in 14th), but is looking to engage Iran in a race for Chile's 12th spot while Argentina has shoved Mexico out of 8th place and is now in hot pursuit of the patriarch of the Spanish Inquisition.

Oh well, tomorrow's another day.

If they are, This won't help matters
"It probably was really selfish of me, and I probably won't do it again," she says, sheepishly. "But at the time, I guess you just think of yourself and you want that holiday - but then you don't want to quarantine. No one wants to quarantine.

Reading around... And noting how infectious the Coranavirus-SARS2 appears to be... Including for people that are in an enclosed space and beyond 2 metres away yet still getting infected from a single source infected person...

Personally, I'm convinced there must be a significant spread from infectious aerosols.

Unfortunately, those aerosols turn the "keep 2 metres distant" advice into a bit of a statistics game...

Imagine the smoke from an old-style cigarette smoker rather than the spittle-splutter from a drunkard. The spittle might largely well "rain out" within a 2 metre radius. Those smoke-like particle aerosols instead linger a long way downstream and round abouts...

Hence the emphasis to avoid meeting people indoors? And to always ensure good ventilation?

Shame about all those aircon compromised stinking offices and other minimum cost cramped enclosed office work spaces...

The world case total has now passed 34.1 million and deaths passed 1,018,000. :-O

I'm starting to feel sorry for Finland as everytime they move out of 102nd spot someone else comes along and slaps them back, Slovakia is the culprit this time. Meanwhile Montenegro passed both Guinea and the D.R.C. into 96th place as Namibia passed Malaysia for 94th spot, but Jordan didn't like 100th spot and decided to jump over all just mentioned and into 94th place knock all those others back a spot. Myanmar (93rd) has joined the end of the next pack and will start moving through that group before Jordan gets to them. Tunisia passed North Macedonia into 84th and now threatens Greece.

Lebanon passed both Kenya and Afghanistan to take over 68th spot while Paraguay moved past Azerbaijan into 65th and to the head of that pack. Costa Rica passed Portugal to move back into 49th while Romania removed Qatar from 29th and Argentina became the 8th country to pass 750,000 cases.

The biggest mover of the day was Guadeloupe who jumped into into 118th spot from 129th, but they're not regular reporters to the stats.

Anyhow I'll have more updates later as the race continues.

I see that there is a "New Zealand spike" of 12 new cases, but it isn't really, 10 of the cases recently arrived on the same flight from India. The other two were also imports from the US and the Philippines.

When I last checked on our Kiwi cousins they were is 152nd spot, but they're now down to 156th now and seeing that after 2 months of lockdown Victoria has finally got their act back together so talk is on now to open the airways back up between our 2 countries before Xmas.

Of our 17 cases reported here today only 2 are of unknown community transmissions (1 in N.S.W. and 1 in Victoria), 3 overseas arrivals (2 in N.S.W. and 1 in W.A.) and Victoria can claim the rest of them (but they're certainly light years better than the 700+ daily cases that they were throwing up not so long ago). Out of our 888 deaths Victoria accounts for 800 of them.
