In the UK, I believe it depends very much on the actions of individual medical practitioners. When my mother passed away five years ago, I was handed a sealed envelope prepared by her family doctor, who had been responsible for supervising her medical care while she was living in a residential care home. I was directed to take this envelope to the county Registrar when registering the death. The certificate prepared by the Registrar says that the cause of death was "Cerebrovascular Accident" - which I understand to imply a problem with blood supply to the brain. The care home staff also told me that they had no doubt that my mother was also suffering from Alzheimer's disease (dementia). I believe that it is quite common for family doctors to restrict themselves to bald, medical, facts when preparing the death certificate - to protect the feelings of grieving family members. Words like 'suicide', 'HIV', 'AIDS', 'Alzheimer's', and now 'coronavirus', may be avoided, even if relevant. Since the data relay passes from family doctor, to Registrar, to state statistical office, to federal statistical office, there are many opportunities for these well-meaning protections of feelings to distort the final global report. |

Are these the 'real' numbers? That also applies to the US States. WaPo - Which deaths count toward the covid-19 death toll? It depends on the state. In Alabama, officials have ruled that one of every 10 people who died with covid-19 did not die of covid-19. Among those excluded from the numbers reported to the federal government were a bedbound patient with aspiration pneumonia in one lung and a person with a buildup of fluid and partial collapse of one lung. |

Are these the 'real' numbers? And therein lies a major problem. Country 'A' is counting apples only while Country 'B' is including oranges and pineapples. Without a standardized rule of what constitutes a fatality of Covid and what is an 'other' but also had Covid positivity there won't be an accurate tally. The WHO used to be looked to for that definition but with their reputation now tarnished by their acquiescence to the Chinese Government's wish to conceal numbers and details of the origin, it's a free for all. As the U.S. continues on its merry way, Russia has recorded another 10K+ day as it rushes to catch up with Spain and Brazil threw in another 11K+ day clearing France and is now in hot pursuit of Italy. Meanwhile India and Peru are in a dual to see who'll take China's 11th spot off them and Saudi Arabia has slipped past the Netherlands into 16th place with Mexico, Pakistan and Chile in a race to see who'll be next to knock them further down. Israel is down to 32nd, Japan down to 34th, South Korea 43rd and Australia will lose its 50th spot to Argentina very soon with a few more countries slowly catching up. But this COVID-19 has certainly brought the nutters out. :-( Conspiracy theorists, far-right extremists around the world seize on the pandemic. Maybe now is the time to swept them all up while they're out and put away for their and the rest of us own safeties. ;-) |

Who to believe? "The ventilators are working to their limits. Preliminary indications are that it was overloaded and caught fire, and that was the cause," a source at St Petersburg emergencies department told the Interfax news agency. Alexei Kurinny, a member of the Russian parliament's health committee, said it was unlikely that a ventilator could have short-circuited or overloaded, and that fire safety was built into their design. |

Following up on a now old story but one that still has consequences from the misplaced (reckless?) hype: Nationwide Study Finds Malaria Drug Touted by President Trump Led to More Deaths, No Benefits in Coronavirus Patients wrote: A malaria drug widely touted by President Donald Trump for treating the new coronavirus showed no benefit in a large analysis of its use in U.S. veterans hospitals. There were more deaths among those given hydroxychloroquine versus standard care, researchers reported... Hydroxychloroquine Fails to Help Coronavirus Patients in Largest Study of the Drug to Date wrote: In a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, scientists led by a team at Columbia University found that people infected with COVID-19 taking hydroxychloroquine do not fare better than those not receiving the drug... Posted yesterday Very enlightening blog regarding infection risks and rates while re-opening society.....written by a Comparative Immunologist and Biology Professor.. I fear it is written above the intelligence of the average Faux news presenter to grasp. Confirmation came hours later: https://thehill.com/homenews/media/497226-fox-newss-john-roberts-rips-abcs-jonathan-karl-on-mask-shaming-tweet Fox News chief White House correspondent John Roberts slammed ABC News chief White House correspondent Jonathan Karl on Twitter after Karl posted a picture of Roberts without a mask prior to the start of President Trump's press conference. Today. The US Genius tweeted this. https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1260171664865796097 Our Testing is the BEST in the World, by FAR! Numbers are coming down in most parts of our Country, which wants to open and get going again. It is happening, safely! "We estimate that our nation will be able to carry out at least 40 to 50 million tests per month this fall, if needed at that time," said Admiral Brett Giroir, at the HHS. He added that 12.9 million tests will be conducted in the next four weeks, in addition to the 9 million tests already done in the country. It was reported to be twice as many tests as any other country has done. (Hmm... Compared to what countries?) Meanwhile the head of the NIAID, Anthony Fauci, said in a Senate hearing on Tuesday that the coronary-related deaths in the United States are likely to be more than the official death toll. He said he was not sure how many percent higher the actual death rate could be. But in all likelihood, it's higher, he said. He also urged caution to ease restrictions in the United States. "If you think we have it under control, we don't have it," he replied to Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren during the hearing. Fauci stated that there are currently nine possible "candidates" for covid-19 vaccine and research that began in January. "If we are successful, you will know this in the fall or winter," Fauci said, adding that the authorities said it would take 12 to 18 months to produce a vaccine, shortly after the research began. "I also have to warn that there are opportunities for negative consequences or that some vaccines may increase the negative effect of the infection," said Dr. Anthony Fauci. |

I think we have to be careful to distinguish 'statistical' statistics from 'political' statistics. I was reminded of the old proverb "A lie can run halfway round the world before the truth can get its boots on". Political statistics are quick, glib, partial, selective, ... - all sorts of naughty things like that. Statistical statistics are slow, nuanced, complete (as far as possible in the time), and analytical. For the UK, I much prefer the Deaths registered by week report, published by our Office of National Statistics. That chart, published this morning, has figures up to 1st May only. |

The John Hopkins page show Russia in 2nd place.I'll stick with this page, https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries, and by that Russia will be in 2nd place by this time next week, but who can really say how accurate any figures are with the way that some countries are reporting cases, deaths and their amount of testing with tracking? But as I've said before, if all things were equal then the previous linked page would look more like this page, https://www.worldometers.info/world-population/population-by-country/. |

This time last night (my time) Russia had leap frogged both the U.K. and Italy into 3rd place by reported cases, but this morning the U.K. had taken 3rd spot for a short time as Russia has just shoved right past them and now has its sights on Spain's 2nd place. :-O The John Hopkins page show Russia in 2nd place. And on AP there is a report that Iran's death total, as disclosed from the research arm of the government, is close to 12,000 nearly double the official figure from the Health Ministry. |

India has jumped Canada for 12th place and is now off after China while Peru looks to take Canada next. Meanwhile Japan is now down to 34th spot, South Korea's down to 40th and Australia is now down to 50th spot. |

I'm not sure if I would laugh at them or cry for their inability to see that the old adage "Look after the pence and the pounds will look after themselves" is just as true now as when it was first uttered.+1. An oldie but golden. You know, if you hang around this world long enough, you get to see some things.Another +1. Not taken a screenshot because it'll identity the man. Recently got a missed call & a text message one Sunday at 17:45 (not yesterday). Had popped out to my local shop to get some milk, always leave my phone at home for those little trips. Seeing who the missed call was from, thought if urgent, he'll call back. Checked out the text message: "Where are you? My computer is faulty". I kid you not. Keeping that on my phone for future reference. I'll let you all imagine what my thoughts were regarding that message. :-) |
