Now righties are suddenly sounding like organized labour fighting against the globalists. I'm not sure if I would laugh at them or cry for their inability to see that the old adage "Look after the pence and the pounds will look after themselves" is just as true now as when it was first uttered. Canada for many years had a law that in order for a brewery to sell beer in each province they had to brew it in that province. You know, if you hang around this world long enough, you get to see some things. Like globalization efforts. From the 1970's until the present, it was the right wing that supported the corporate strategy of moving production to the third world. Now righties are suddenly sounding like organized labour fighting against the globalists. All I can do is laugh at them. They're like a f@rt in a windstorm, going wherever the wind takes them. I do not fight fascists because I think I can win. I fight them because they are fascists. Chris Hedges A riot is the language of the unheard. -Martin Luther King, Jr. |

I think this pandemic experience, once it's over, could and should spark some fundamental re-thought of the economic 'financial system'. We're used to hearing about big figures like "money supply" and "Gross Domestic Product", but it's become much clearer to me that we have to think much more about micro-scale money flow. I'm middle class, in the UK sense. That's probably posher than the American (USA) use of the term. I get my pension monthly, paid into the bank. I've got a debit card, a pre-approved overdraft, a credit card - my bills are mostly paid monthly or annually by direct debit. The same will be true of national politicians and senior civil servants. It's the way we all live - and the way we all think. It's normal - for us. But half of it has stopped moving. My weekly shopping trip will still pay the shelf-stacker's wage, but my empty pint glass isn't paying the barmaid. All those little micro-transactions aren't noticed until they stop. Except by those wage-earners who need to keep it moving on down the chain to the next shop or childminder. But the big bills - the rent and the utilities - just keep piling up. The unravelling will be painful - and that's just the national problems, before the overseas remittances are even considered. |

Covid-19 is showing up a lot of issues where what is often been taken for granted, is now becoming very serious for many. Lifelines curtailed Likewise, he says young children now, even those not yet born, whose parents' income is diminished by the decline in remittances, will "be much more likely to pass away, to be undernourished, to drop out of school to supplement family income. And those are things that future researchers will be able to detect, unfortunately, in the data 50 to 70 years from now."I wonder if at that time, historians will look at governments of 2020 handling of the pandemic? The article does provide a link to an interesting study. Is the 1918 pandemic over |

Sadly we had a few brain dead fools down in Melbourne being complete idiots yesterday. Conspiracy theorists flout social distancing rules at Melbourne coronavirus lockdown rally. They must be SKY News subscribers. |

Oh there'd be more than enough fools around to believe that bit of fiction. :-( Anyhow the U.K. has now passed Italy for 3rd spot before Russia takes them both. |

Sheesh! Some of the conspiracy theories memes are so far beyond belief that they very badly put Darwin's theory to the test!! Hopefully, that ridiculous (spoof?) example shouldn't get very far... Changing direction slightly, an interesting story has popped up on the BBC website this morning. Coronavirus doctor's diary: The strange case of the choir that coughed in January (and the choir member's partner who flew back from Wuhan in mid-December) I may be biased, because the geographical centre of the events described is less than five miles from my house - but it seems to me that this is (should be?) of major scientific interest. I'd expect to be seeing medical examination and research teams parachuting past my living room window! But the story ends with the lamest of testing excuses: "We haven't yet, in the NHS, got a reliable test that reveals whether someone had it in the past". And this is supposed to be a first-world country with the best integrated public health service in the world? Sometimes I despair. |

World wide the number of reported cases has passed 4.1 million and 280,000 reported deaths while the U.S. passes 80,000 reported deaths and Russia is about to join Spain, Italy and the U.K. in the 200,000 club while Russia along with Brazil are still recording 10,000+ cases per day.Well Russia has just thrown in a >11,000 day taking them to over 209,000 and putting them within striking distance of both the U.K. and Italy and will likely be in 3rd spot in 48hrs. :-O |

On May 5 on my way back from my doctors office I passed by a couple of Mexican restaurants and noticed the parking lots were full. It appears that many of those who like to celebrate cinco de mayo were thowing caution to the wind and partying anyway. I noticed today at the Florida covid 19 information web page that there was a spike on the 6th of newly reported cases. I think that unless officials plan to keep us at home until a vaccine is developed all restrictions should be terminated. We are all grown up men and women and enough information is out there for us to make our own decisions about where to go and whom to see. Personally I will be continuing as usual, meaning I stay home 99% of the time and only go out for groceries , doctor's appointments and taking my dog to the dog park. I will be wearing my mask if conditions look too crowded. +2 Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. --- George Santayana Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely. --- Lord Acton |

The celebrations started as early as last Friday around here but I can't verify activity at Mexican venues as I only leave my home when absolutely necessary. So I will watch the case rate increase over the next week. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |
