GENEVA —

A panel of World Health Organization experts says strategies must be strengthened to combat the worsening Ebola epidemic in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The WHO's latest report counted 1,738 cases of Ebola in Congo, including 1,218 deaths.

Congo's minister of health, Oly Ilungo, likened the Ebola epidemic to a multi-headed dragon. Speaking through an interpreter, he said the epidemic began in one place, Mangina, but keeps popping up elsewhere.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is warning people not to “kiss or snuggle” chickens after an outbreak of salmonella that has affected 52 people in multiple states.

The CDC and public health officials have linked a widespread outbreak of salmonella infections to contact with “backyard poultry.”

The agency says 52 cases have been reported across 21 states since May 10, with Ohio, Missouri and Pennsylvania seeing the largest numbers. The outbreak began sometime in January and victims have included children less than a year old, the CDC said.

Great News!

Algeria and Argentina have been officially recognized by WHO as malaria-free. The certification is granted when a country proves that it has interrupted indigenous transmission of the disease for at least 3 consecutive years.

The measles outbreak got so bad in Manila, Philippines, that San Lazaro Hospital had to set up tents in the parking lot, the courtyard and even the landing at the top of the stairs outside the pediatric ward to house patients.

"This ward would only accommodate 50 patients," says Dr. Ferdinand de Guzman, the head of family medicine at the hospital. "But at the height of the outbreak, [there were] 300 patients per ward."

High-security Ebola burials spark dismay, anger in DR Congo

People in Ebola-hit eastern DR Congo are struggling to come to terms with high-security burials that are part of a hard-pressed strategy to roll back the disease.

Anyone who dies of the highly infectious haemorrhagic fever has to be buried in carefully-controlled conditions designed to minimise the risk of infection from body fluids.

First declared last August, the epidemic has now claimed nearly 1,200 lives -- 200 of them in May alone.

Parasite in paradise: Rat lungworm disease confirmed in three Hawaii visitors
https://www.cnn.com/2019/05/27/health/rat-lungworm-hawaii-cdc-trnd/index.html

Rat lungworm disease has sickened three more visitors to the state of Hawaii recently, bringing the total number of cases to 10 for 2018 and five so far this year, the state's Department of Health said.
The three cases newly confirmed by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are unrelated, and affected three adult travelers from mainland United States.

New Hampshire man treated for rabies after being bitten by bat hiding in iPad case, report says

A New Hampshire man required treatment for rabies after a bat that was reportedly hiding in his iPad case snuck out and bit him last week — and now he hopes his ordeal will help educate others about the dangerous disease.

Roy Syvertson, 86, said he had been using his tablet for about an hour before the critter popped its head out and nipped him.

U.S. Measles Outbreaks Hit Highest Level in More Than 25 Years
https://www.wsj.com/articles/u-s-measles-cases-set-record-11559242458

The number of measles cases in the U.S. this year has hit the highest level in more than 25 years, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Thursday, warning that the virus may no longer be considered to have been eliminated in this country if the large outbreaks continue through the fall.

Children under five dying at higher rate in Congo Ebola epidemic - WHO

GENEVA (Reuters) - Children under five infected with Ebola in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo are dying at a higher rate than other patients as their parents shun special treatment centres, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Thursday.

Three out of four of the under-fives, or 77%, are succumbing to the disease, compared with 57% for older youngsters and 67% for all infected people, the U.N. body said in a new analysis of the epidemic - the world's second worst on record.

Eggs again?

Study: Cholesterol in eggs tied to cardiac disease, death
https://medicalxpress.com/news/2019-06-cholesterol-eggs-tied-cardiac-disease.html
The risk of heart disease and death increases with the number of eggs an individual consumes, according to a UMass Lowell nutrition expert who has studied the issue.

Research that tracked the diets, health and lifestyle habits of nearly 30,000 adults across the country for as long as 31 years has found that cholesterol in eggs, when consumed in large quantities, is associated with ill health effects, according to Katherine Tucker, a biomedical and nutritional sciences professor in UMass Lowell's Zuckerberg College of Health Sciences, who co-authored the analysis. The study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Islamic State claims deadly attack in east Congo's Ebola zone
http://news.trust.org//item/20190604191037-ap8pc/

GOMA, Congo, June 4 (Reuters) - Islamic State claimed responsibility on Tuesday for a deadly overnight attack in an area of eastern Congo hit by an Ebola epidemic, although its account of the violence differed from local reports.

The deputy mayor of Beni in the eastern Democratic of Congo said 13 civilians were killed late on Monday in an attack by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) - a group thought to be linked to Islamic State.

Note a key description in there:

"when consumed in large quantities"

Hence, keep to a good balanced varied diet with no one thing in "large quantities".

Even better for yourself and our planet: Keep away from (heavily packaged and Marketed) 'highly processed foods'.
