Hornsea 2: North Sea wind farm claims title of world's largest
wrote:
The world's largest offshore wind farm is now fully operational, 55 miles off the coast of Yorkshire.

The Hornsea 2 project can generate enough electricity to power about 1.3 million homes - that's enough for a city the size of Manchester.

A decade ago renewables made up just 11% of the UK's energy mix. By 2021 it was 40%, with offshore wind the largest component...

... With even larger projects under construction nearby in the North Sea it's unlikely its title will last long. The Dogger Bank wind farm, which when fully built will be able to power 6m homes, is due to start coming on stream next year...

... The current worldwide energy crisis, triggered by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, has intensified the search for alternatives to gas fired power stations. There are no quick solutions. Offshore wind projects take about five years from planning consent to full operation...

Really, is this a worthwhile solution?

Sizewell C: Boris Johnson 'confident' nuclear plant will go ahead
wrote:
... The project, which is being developed by French energy company EDF, is estimated to cost about £20bn overall...

We can expect that price to at least double to £40,000 Million pounds.

That huge sum is enough instead to completely rewire our entire National Grid and max us all out on wind and tidal power and power storage systems to allow us to go completely pollution free.

Better yet, going wind and tidal can be accomplished in less than 10 years to quickly benefit us sooner rather than too late.

In contrast, the nuclear power build is going to take multiple decades to make it very expensively very late to the party to trap us with expensively outdated old tech...

Is this really such a good idea?...

Or just jobs for the boys??

Switching to green fuel needs same urgency as Covid jab, says energy boss
wrote:
The UK would be paying "billions" of pounds less for its energy, if it had stuck with plans to reduce fossil fuel use, an energy boss has said...

... A report earlier this year by energy analysis site Carbon Brief said bills in the UK were nearly £2,500 Million higher than they would have been if climate policies had not been scrapped over the past decade.

"We now need to get on with it, and going green will not only help prevent the catastrophic climate change we see already changing weather patterns, but will also drive energy costs down,"...

At last!

A taste of reality:

Dutch city of Haarlem may be world’s first to ban most meat ads
wrote:
Haarlem in The Netherlands is set to ban most meat ads from public spaces because of the food's climate impact...

... opposition from the meat sector and some who say it stifles free speech.

The UN says livestock generate more than 14% of all man-made greenhouse gases, including methane.

"Meat is very harmful to the environment. We cannot tell people that there is a climate crisis and encourage them to buy products that are part of it,"...

... The backlash from the meat industry was swift. "The authorities are going too far in telling people what's best for them," said a spokesman from the Central Organisation for the Meat Sector...

... Amsterdam and The Hague have already banned adverts for the aviation and fossil fuel industries.

Beef produces the most greenhouse gas emissions, which include methane...

As is all too often, we have Big Business against the world and our planet. At least their excuses are totally pathetic on this one.

Something good to catch on and spread far and wide?...

Or are meat eaters willfully blind and "unaware"?...

A failed solution?
Special Report: How U.S. ethanol plants are allowed to pollute more than oil refineries
WASHINGTON, Sept 8 (Reuters) - In 2007, the U.S. Congress mandated the blending of biofuels such as corn-based ethanol into gasoline. One of the top goals: reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

But today, the nation’s ethanol plants produce more than double the climate-damaging pollution, per gallon of fuel production capacity, than the nation’s oil refineries, according to a Reuters analysis of federal data.

The average ethanol plant chuffed out 1,187 metric tons of carbon emissions per million gallons of fuel capacity in 2020, the latest year data is available. The average oil refinery, by contrast, produced 533 metric tons of carbon.

It's a huge undertaking, but it needs to be done.

To find old methane-leaking oil wells, researchers look to history.

But finding the hundreds of thousands of them won't be easy.

A lot of so called carbon reducing solutions are actually carbon exporting solutions that allow the greens to claim 'it's all clean here'

CO2 is not very toxic other than by simply replacing oxygen at high concentrations. We're at about 417ppm right now. The highest Earth has even seen is about 6,000ppm prior to the Carboniferous, and we could survive in that.

Bear in mind, in those conditions there would not be a trace of sea-level ice or permafrost anywhere, the oceans would be about 100m higher, as was the case in the Devonian. This is close to undeniable, as it has already happened before and is simply geography/elevation and volume, rather than requiring prediction. I'll skip any predictions of temperature lol.

I am amazed how much of China disappears...

Why has this take oh so long?...

Australia's most-polluting coal plant to shut decade earlier than planned
wrote:
Australia's dirtiest power plant - responsible for more than 3% of the country's emissions - will shut a decade earlier than planned.

The coal-fired Loy Yang A power station in Victoria will close in 2035...

... Since his election in May, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has committed to a 43% reduction in 2005 emissions by 2030, up from his predecessor's pledge of 26-28%.

But scientists have criticised the government for continuing to support fossil fuel industries.

The Climate Council says AGL's decision is proof coal is no longer commercially viable in Australia.

"Coal is unable to compete on cost with renewable energy, it is also inflexible, ageing, unreliable and inefficient," spokesman Greg Bourne said.

Australia's biggest coal-fired power station will also shut earlier than planned, it was announced earlier this year.

And on Wednesday, the Queensland state government unveiled a plan to shift the state away from coal power by 2035.

Why not sooner?

Elon Musk already has the proven grid-changing tech (for just one example)...

Because the actual grid needs to be fixed 1st which our previous coal loving government didn't want to do. ;-)

You get rid of an out of touch fossil fuel loving government and it's just amazing how quickly things start to change, but trying to catch up on a decade of stupid neglect and denial will be a challenge.

Australia's great energy transition reaches a 'tipping point' as clock winds forward for coal.

And it seems like hardly a week goes by now where some new renewable energy producing resource isn't announced here.

They just keep on getting better.

A wind turbine just smashed a global energy record—and it's recyclable.

The new offshore turbine could power a Model 3 Tesla for over 1 million miles.

Siemens Gamesa announced Monday that its breakthrough development in offshore wind turbine technology, the 14-222 DD offshore prototype, has set a new world record for the most energy generated over 24 hours. As first reported by news outlets earlier this week, the prototype delivered 359 megawatt-hours in a single day—roughly enough to power 18,000 households, or keep a Tesla Model 3 charged for over 1 million miles....

...One of the keys to the 14-222 DD offshore prototype's success are its "revolutionary" blades cast from a single, gigantic piece of recyclable resin. Although the company's "RecyclableBlade" technology first appeared in an earlier turbine generation last year, additional construction advancements have further optimized its offerings via its latest project....
