And waves across an ocean can travel for thousands of miles... It is very rare to have no waves crashing upon a seashore.

And as for all renewables, you always have a mix of sources to guarantee a diverse supply.

Not all waves are generated by the action of wind over water, some are the result of tidal motion of the sea over the sea bed, turbulence due to the inflow of rivers. And as Martin says these waves can travel for trans-oceanic distances.

The most significant place in the UK is the pentland firth

So far most trials there have failed because the tidal power is so strong the generating devices have broken their moorings.

tidal action is not waves. waves don't transport water, tides do

Finally Canberra is leading the way forward.

No new gas connections for ACT homes and businesses from 2023 under plan to phase out fossil fuels.

Now if they hand out some of that ultra white roof paint to cover up those dark heat absorbing rooves and turn them into reflectors that would be good too.

Seeing as our last government sat on their coal with gas 2 businesses combined to start cutting the ties.

A 'graphite battery' in Wodonga will be Australia's first commercial thermal energy storage.

When Finland recently unveiled the world's first "sand battery", there was speculation that Australian manufacturers would soon be rolling out their own versions, as they looked to burn less gas.

Now, a pet food factory in Wodonga has announced it's doing just that.

The Mars Petcare facility, one of the largest pet-food makers in the country, will take delivery of a "graphite battery" later this year, as part of a trial to reduce emissions and ultimately save money.

From the outside, the orange container won't look like much, but experts say the system's installation is an important moment in the country's clean energy transition, and such thermal energy storage (TES) facilities will become a common sight over the next decade.....

....Like the Finnish sand battery, the Wodonga TES system purchases renewable electricity from the grid when it's cheapest and converts this to heat through resistive heating (like an electric bar-heater).

This heat is then stored in the graphite blocks at temperatures of up to 900C.

The modular design can be scaled up. A single container has a capacity of about 3 megawatt-hours of thermal energy, which is equivalent to the amount of electrical energy stored by a large neighbourhood chemical battery.

In practice, the battery is designed to be charged and discharged at the same time, which means that over the course of a day it can process up to 8MWh of thermal energy.

When heat is needed, water is run through pipes within the seacrate, and converted to high-pressure steam, at temperatures of 150-250C.

This heat is then used wherever it's needed. In the case of the Wodonga factory, it will cook pet food.

The clean energy system will reduce the factory's gas consumption by 20 per cent, said Paul Matuschka, its head of sustainability.

The system is scheduled to begin operation early next year, and more batteries may be installed.

"We've got a metric to be 100 per cent renewable from direct operations by 2040," Mr Matuschka said....
Now if that little system can cut gas use by 20% using renewable electricity (as claimed) then it wouldn't be hard to scale gas out altogether there.

...The time it takes for TES units to pay for themselves through gas savings depended on where a business was getting its electricity, Mr Zaal said.

If they're buying from the grid, it might take 10 years, but if they're generating their own it could take as little as five, he said.

"These systems are 30-year systems. Once paid back, it's pretty much free," he said.

Mars Petcare had calculated a payback period of 10-12 years, Mr Matushcka said....
And that has to be a plus on top.

Uruguay goes 100% renewables powered for their entire country.

They even export completely clean green electricity to their neighboring countries.

... All for a lower cost than that for using dirty old fossil fuel.

So... Why the negative title for this report?...

... Is the final skewed line in that report inserted in there so as to confuse the real world circumstances, as explained by this comment?

It doesn't matter that the cost of producing renewables are lower, because THE PRICE is set by speculations in "free market". That's why they are happy to export their electricity to Brazil and Argentina. A solution would be to set two parallel prices for local users and export, but that would lead to a potential trade war.

No matter what your spin is, the truth of the matter is that 'renewable energy' all relies on the same old fossil fuels that have gotten us this far.
Where do you think all the energy came from to make their plastics and build their batteries?
And what are they going to do with them when they reach their end of life?
California ALREADY does not know what to do with all of their expired solar panels.
Nothing exists without the energy of the sun stored via the petroleum in the ground.
Can we do better? Yes, but it will take years more than the greenies will currently accept as possible.

The 'greenhouse effect' is already in a steady motion that will not be affected by anything that 'environmentalists' can or will do. It is already in motion and cannot be stopped.

So just sit back and enjoy the warming.

https://factcheck.afp.com/doc.afp.com.327A429
"A 2017 study published in the scientific journal Nature Energy calculated that one gigawatt hour of solar electricity produces five tonnes of greenhouse gases, compared to 820 tonnes for a coal-fired power plant." This is inclusive of the total energy requirement to manufacture and transport solar panels.

"The European Environment Agency says around 90 percent of the mass of the wind turbines can be recycled"

"Research cited by the EPA and International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) also shows that electric vehicles make less planet-warming emissions over their life cycles than gasoline cars."

""In any case, it's clear that the social and environmental impact of global warming is catastrophic, at a different scale than the mining of battery raw materials, and that battery electric vehicles have a much lower global warming impact than combustion engine cars,"

"According to the European Environment Agency, 95 percent of the materials in solar panels can be recycled."

https://www.newscientist.com/lastword/mg24332461-400-what-is-the-carbon-payback-period-for-a-wind-turbine/
"In 2006, turbine manufacturer Vestas studied the carbon payback period for various turbines. This took into account extraction and manufacturing of raw materials, production of the turbines, their transport, erection, operation, maintenance, dismantling and disposal, and the same for their foundation and the transmission grid. The figure was between seven and nine months, depending on the type of turbine. Other analyses have come up with similar figures."

Personally, I am more concerned about running out of fossil fuel... if alternatives buy humanity enough time that some long-term solutions in development can come online (ie thorium or breeder nuclear, fusion) so much the better.

"Can be" is not will be, or is economic, or carbon reducing and until all three are assured it is just more hot air warming the planet.

I'm more interested in the 5 - 10% that cannot be recycled.
My gut reaction that the majority is the structure and mechanical parts and the parts, that so far cannot be recycled, are at the center of the electrical generation equipment that contain the rare earths and other minerals that are in short supply and are all difficult and dirty to mine and process.

edit] Did a little more digging. Suspect those 90 - 95% numbers are questionable as the blades are about 15% of the structures and they are made from glass or carbon fibres that cannot be recycled and go into land fill.
Also in that bad news the blades when produced have an expected life of 25 years, BUT are often replaced after 10 - 15 years for more efficient blades.

Hi-tech glass fibre, and other fibre reinforces polymers are being recycled into a variety of lower grade polymer reinforcement materials. Wiggo points to bridges, but use is also being found in road surfaces, low-end cement, railway sleepers (railroad ties), garden furniture are also using these difficult to recycle materials. In some cases the recycling is being inhibited by the companies and authorities doing the first stages (collection and sorting) just can't be bothered.

Germany opens a passengers rail line with hydrogen-fueled trains

Fourteen hydrogen trains powered by fuel cell propulsion will exclusively run on the route in Bremervörde, Lower Saxony. The 93 million euro ($92.3 million) deal has been struck by state subsidiary Landesnahverkehrsgesellschaft Niedersachsen (LVNG), the owners of the railway, and Alstom, builders of the Coradia iLint trains. The Elbe-Weser Railways and Transport Company (EVB), which will operate the trains, and gas and engineering company Linde, are also part of the project.

The trains, five of which which debut Wednesday, will gradually replace the 15 diesel trains that currently run on the route, with all 14 running exclusively by the end of the year. Just 1 kilo of hydrogen fuel can do the same as around 4.5 kilos of diesel.

The trains are emissions-free and low-noise, with only steam and condensed water issuing from the exhaust. They have a range of 1,000 kilometers (621 miles), meaning they can run for an entire day on the network on a single tank of hydrogen. A hydrogen filling station has already been established on the route. The trains can go at a maximum of 140 kph, or 87mph, though regular speeds on the line are much less, between 80-120 kph.

Now wouldn't it be ironic given Germany's recent fuel issues if the hydrogen was made from natural gas, oil, coal, or water electrolysis using coal-generated electricity. :^p Hydrogen is of course only an intermediary.

Solar panel sales boom as energy bills soar
wrote:
The energy bills crisis has prompted a big rise in demand for solar panels.

Just over 3,000 solar installations are being carried out every week, according to trade association Solar Energy UK, up from 1,000 a week in July 2020.

One provider said this month it had seen enquiries about solar panels rise tenfold...

All good for the long term...

I just hope there are not too many "boom time scams" being perpetrated by the more dubious installers lost in the rush...
