New Zealand has unveiled a plan to tax sheep and cattle burps in a bid to tackle one of the country's biggest sources of greenhouse gases.

It would make it the first nation to charge farmers for the methane emissions from the animals they keep. New Zealand is home to just over five million people, along with around 10 million cattle and 26 million sheep.

Almost half the country's total greenhouse gas emissions come from agriculture, mainly methane...

... The plan also includes incentives for farmers who reduce emissions through feed additives, while planting trees on farms could be used to offset emissions.

Andrew Hoggard - who is a dairy farmer and the national president of Federated Farmers of New Zealand - told the BBC that he broadly approved of the proposals. "We've been working with the government and other organisations on this for years to get an approach that won't shut down farming in New Zealand, so we've signed off on a lot of stuff we're happy with." "But you know, like all of these types of agreements with many parties involved, there's always going to be a couple of dead rats..."

... Methane is the second most common greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide (CO2). It is one of the most potent and responsible for a third of current warming from human activities...

Now we just need the rest of the world to follow that prime example, especially including for cattle...

Cue yet more deadly unhealthy lobbying from the fast food industry such as McDonald's?...

We really do need to get the polluters to pay at the source of their pollution.

Yes those nuke stations work well when properly monitored and maintained, but in some cases coal fired may just have to serve as a temporary solution for some countries sadly. :-(

A floating city in the Maldives begins to take shape.

A city is rising from the waters of the Indian Ocean. In a turquoise lagoon, just 10 minutes by boat from Male, the Maldivian capital, a floating city, big enough to house 20,000 people, is being constructed.

Designed in a pattern similar to brain coral, the city will consist of 5,000 floating units including houses, restaurants, shops and schools, with canals running in between. The first units will be unveiled this month, with residents starting to move in early 2024, and the whole city is due to be completed by 2027.

The project – a joint venture between property developer Dutch Docklands and the Government of the Maldives – is not meant as a wild experiment or a futuristic vision: it’s being built as a practical solution to the harsh reality of sea-level rise.

An archipelago of 1,190 low-lying islands, the Maldives is one of the world’s most vulnerable nations to climate change. Eighty percent of its land area is less than one meter above sea level, and with levels projected to rise up to a meter by the end of the century, almost the entire country could be submerged.

But if a city floats, it could rise with the sea. This is “new hope” for the more than half a million people of the Maldives, said Koen Olthuis, founder of Waterstudio, the architecture firm that designed the city. “It can prove that there is affordable housing, large communities, and normal towns on the water that are also safe. They (Maldivians) will go from climate refugees to climate innovators,” he told CNN....

The Dutch are past masters of building large floating communities, although most of theirs are in fresh water along rivers and canals that are prone to quite large seasonal fluctuations in level and velocity. This looks to be a far more sensible solution that the sand dunes constructed off the coast of Dubai (some of the latter are already suffering erosion after only a few years.)

The world’s largest hybrid ship will set sail in 2024.

French shipping company Brittany Ferries has commissioned the world’s largest hybrid ship for its future fleet, the company announced this week, marking another milestone in the industry’s route to decarbonization. The 639-foot Saint-Malo will be operational in 2024 and replace one of their older models on a route from St. Malo, France, to Portsmouth, England. A second hybrid ship will enter the fleet shortly thereafter.

The Saint-Malo will have a battery with an 11.5 megawatt hour (MWh) capacity, which Brittany Ferries says is about double the size of most hybrid marine vessels on the water today. Wärtsilä, a Finnish technology group, is creating the ship’s hybrid propulsion system that can draw on both liquified natural gas and battery power to run.

“The extensive battery size will allow the vessels to operate with full power, using both propellers and all thrusters to maneuver emissions-free in and out of ports, even in bad weather. The built-in shore power solution will charge the batteries while berthed,” explained Wärtsilä President and CEO Hakan Agnevall in a statement.

This new design has the potential to save up to 15 percent on greenhouse gas emissions compared to a typical diesel-powered vessel, according to the company. Brittany Ferries will double down on its efforts with a second yet-to-be-named ship planned for its route from Caen, France to Portsmouth, England, which will be ready “shortly after” the Saint-Malo, Brittany Ferries said in its announcement. The ships themselves will also be upgradeable; the builder, Stena Roro, plans to leave room on the vessels for renewable updates, such as larger batteries or solar power....

California sets nation's toughest plastics reduction rules.

Companies selling shampoo, food and other products wrapped in plastic have a decade to cut down on their use of the polluting material if they want their wares on California store shelves.

Major legislation passed and signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday aims to significantly reduce single-use plastic packaging in the state and drastically boost recycling rates for what remains. It sets the nation's most stringent requirements for the use of plastic packaging, with lawmakers saying they hope it sets a precedent for other states to follow.

“We’re ruining the planet and we’ve got to change it," Sen. Bob Hertzberg, a Democrat, said before voting on the bill.

Under the bill, plastic producers would have to reduce plastics in single-use products 10% by 2027, increasing to 25% by 2032. That reduction in plastic packaging can be met through a combination of reducing package sizing, switching to a different material or making the product easily reusable or refillable. Also by 2032, plastic would have to be recycled at a rate of 65%, a massive jump from today’s rates. It wouldn’t apply to plastic beverage bottles, which have their own recycling rules.

Efforts to limit plastic packaging have failed in the Legislature for years, but the threat of a similar ballot measure going before voters in November prompted business groups to come to the negotiating table. The measure's three main backers withdrew it from the ballot after the bill passed, though they expressed concern the plastics industry will try to weaken the requirements....

But it could've been even better.

My entire life I've never seen potato chips (crisps) packed in anything but a plastic bag. I simply can't imagine those greasy things in a paper bag.

I guess now all there will be is baked flat mashed potato rounds so they can be uniform enough put in a tube. Yuck.

I have my bright orange reusable grocery bags and when they get damaged the supermarket across the road replaces them with a free of cost replacement while recycling the damaged job.

Since they charge for bags here - new profit center for stores - I just drag the trolly full of stuff to the boot where I keep it full of the cartons the office copy paper comes in and drop it on in. One carton into the abode, unpack and carton back to the boot, grab the next.

I used to use these in the boot (trunk) when shopping by car.
Had 6 in the boot, unfold as required.
Still got them, keeping my DVD.s organised.

Over here, not bought any plastic bags since a few years now...

• I've a good selection of canvas and cloth bags for shopping, including some "eco" cloth/bamboo bags that are tough yet lightweight enough to fold up into your pocket;
  
  
• Occasionally, I'll utilize a discarded cardboard box from the market to then recycle it;
  
  
• The veg shop uses hand-sized paper bags (yes, the old-style brown paper bags) that then get recycled on the compost heap;
  
  
• Most food waste (what little is lost to chopping up and cleaning off) goes on the compost;
  
  
• Which leaves dry waste and recycling that go directly into their respective bins.
  

I still get big plastic bags given to me from commercialized collections for charities. Those get used for the rare occasion any rubbish needs to be bagged up.

I avoid plastic packaging as far as possible for the good health of myself and our planet. However, that does give cause for a lot of glass recycling...


... So that leaves just the disposed-of(*) plastic gloves used for diesel pumps and animal muck!


We can easily go a lot greener.

I have three sets of re-usable bags.
A set of bag is: one big one, one medium sized one, and a bottle bag.
Why three sets?
One at home, just inside the front door - in theory this is the one I use when I go shopping....
One in the car, essential when I forget the one by the door
One on the boat.
They rotate around the three locations as I do forget to pick up a set when I head off shopping, or am carrying stuff to the boat.

Then there's a few assorted cloth bags which get used as and when.

Like Martin those "magnificent" charity bags get used as rubbish bags when needed (or as a poncho when needs must....)
