How can the supposed 'adults' get our world so badly wrong?!

School Strike 4 Climate: Thousands join Australia protest
wrote:
Thousands of Australian children are walking out of school to attend protests, calling for action on climate change.

Up to 50,000 students are expected at School Strike for Climate rallies across the country...

... The protesters are also calling for no new coal, oil and gas projects in Australia, including the controversial Adani mine. ... Protesters want 100% renewable energy generation and exports by 2030 too, along with plans for the transition away from fossil fuel jobs...

... "Simply put, gas doesn't make economic sense in Australia any more... it increases emissions at a time when the rest of the world is reducing emissions, and it creates very few jobs," Nicki Hutley, economist at the Climate Council, said.

The announcement of the new plant came as a report from the International Energy Agency recommended that no new oil and natural gas fields are required beyond those that have already been approved for development, in order to reach net zero-emissions by 2050.

What does it take to kill off the corrupt fossil fuels industry?...

Do we really need to go to court and enforce legal action for every step against the dirty greedy polluters?

Shell: Netherlands court orders oil giant to cut emissions
wrote:
A court in the Netherlands has ruled in a landmark case that the oil giant Shell must reduce its emissions...

The Shell group is responsible for its own CO2 emissions and those of its suppliers, the verdict said.

It is the first time a company has been legally obliged to align its policies with the Paris climate accords...

... Earlier this year another Dutch court ruled that Shell was responsible for damage caused by oil leaks in the Niger Delta, and ordered the company to pay compensation to farmers...

All this despite renewables already being more profitable than dirty pollution!

https://www.latimes.com/politics/story/2021-05-25/biden-administration-unveils-an-offshore-wind-plan-for-californias-coast
The federal government plans to open more than 250,000 acres off the California coast to wind development, the Biden administration announced Tuesday, as part of a major effort to ramp up the nation’s renewable energy and cut its climate-warming emissions.

Under the plan, the administration would allow wind power projects to be built in federal waters off the coast of Central California northwest of Morro Bay, as well as at a second location west of Humboldt Bay. Officials estimate that the two areas combined could generate 4,600 megawatts of electricity — enough to power 1.6 million homes.

Thanks for that. Good to see positive movement...

... 4,600 megawatts of electricity — enough to power 1.6 million homes...

Yikes! Are USA homes so wastefully power hungry??!

That would be powering over 4 million UK homes with power to spare...

Cue moves to improve the AirCon and thermal insulation?...

Going green and clean for the good of everyone:

Bus depot bid to be UK's largest electric vehicle charging hub
wrote:
Scotland's biggest bus operator has announced it is building the UK's largest electric vehicle charging hub.

First Bus will install 160 charging points and replace half its fleet with electric buses at its Caledonia depot in Glasgow...

... Charging the full fleet will use the same electricity as it takes to power a town of 10,000 people. The scale of the project means changes are needed to the power grid to accommodate the extra demand.

First Glasgow managing director Andrew Jarvis told BBC Scotland: "We've got to play our part in society in changing how we all live and work. A big part of that is emissions from vehicles. "Transport is stubbornly high in terms of emissions and bus companies need to play their part, and are playing their part, in that zero emission journey."...

... The transition requires a £35.6m investment by First with electric buses costing almost double the £225,000 bill for a single decker running on diesel.

But the company says maintenance and running costs are then much lower. The buses can run on urban routes for 16 hours and be rapidly recharged in just four hours...

Way to go for a brighter cleaner more healthy horizon!

That paragraph probably foretells the biggest story, is the UK and most other countries anywhere near working out the solutions for the extra electricity generation and distribution needed.

Coal fired peaking power plants?

Nope... There should be no need. Especially so here in the UK with our excess of gas powered plants...

Old coal fired plant might still have a role to play for 'emergency' capacity management to be fired up and brought online only to cover for supply failures elsewhere.

Meanwhile, we have other far better options for covering for power peaks.

There is also the aspect that with only a 4 hours charge time, are the Glasgow buses going to be charging up on cheap overnight electricity whilst the rest of the country sleeps?

Way to go...!

Here's a good article covering the costs of balancing the peaks and troughs of power supply vs demand:

Getting to 100% renewables requires cheap energy storage. But how cheap?
wrote:
New research gives energy storage a cost target...

... highly relevant to current events as a whole host of states and cities are passing laws targeting “100 percent clean energy.” Some, like Hawaii, specifically target 100 percent renewables. Some, like Washington state, target 100 percent “clean,” allowing room for non-renewable sources.

Which target is more realistic and prudent? Just how far can renewables get?...

Note that article is from 2019. Since then we have had Tesla save South Australia from the dirty old coal plants 'gaming' and expensively gouging the supply grid. The storage batteries used there for balancing the grid supply have already paid for themselves multiple times over. We now also have good improvements in costs and tech across multiple storage systems... More details to come.

Are we there yet?

We do at least seem to be getting towards good clean power systems. The question is more of are we converting to going green and clean quickly enough...

Along with everybody else needing to charge their vehicles for use the next business day. Considering the numbers involved it could be that night time might not be the low consumption time.

For the time being, we're a long way away from that yet...

Also, more development is needed yet. We'll soon enough wonder however people survived fueling up with the smelly toxic dangerously flammable stuff of today!

How long ago was it that smoking was banned at petrol stations?...

We'll get there but soon enough?

For the time being, we're a long way away from that yet...

With the time it takes to do major infrastructure changes the the time between now and when Boris has said we will all go electric is not long.

In fact it is very short.

Give me a time frame for when every street in the country where there is no off-road parking and outside multistory dwellings, for the electricity distribution companies to install two charge points for every ten houses.

That's the easy part. Connecting them to the grid so all of them can be in use at once is the tricky part. Every power cable will have to be replaced with one say three times the diameter to carry the power. Every transformer in the country will need to be replaced with one with three times the power rating. Every bank of reactance capacitors will need to be replaced. Where power is underground new raceways will have to be dug. Where overhead, stronger telephone poles will be needed. Doing anything more that a cosmetic political feel good stunt is a project akin to taking a civilian economy and transforming it into a wartime economy.

How many Power Plants have you been in?

I worked in them. Coal and Nuke.

I Breathed Big Gobs of Air and Never Coughed or Choked. Was Like sitting in front of my TV at Home.

FRESH Beautamous Air.

You Know when I CHOKE and COUGH. When I'm Outside my House and A Car goes by or a Person Goes by with CIG Smoke Billowing Out
of Car Windows and Passerby Lungs. I've CHOKED and COUGHED 100s of Thousands of Times because of CIG and CIGAR Smoke. NEVER while at POWER PLANT.

Turbine Floor to Top of Boilers and All About dA Pipe Racks. Clean and Fresh Baby!

You Know Nothing of Clean Power. I've Breathed it Many Many Many Times.

You?
Don't judge Fossil Fuels by a Few instances of a Nearby Terribly UNTuned Vehicle spewing UNBurnt fuel out Exhaust Pipe. Once it Blows by it is Back to Beautamous Air Again.

You might as Well GET RID of ALL FORESTs and BUILDINGs 'cause of Forest Fires.

Nope
