Further small steps towards the light: A breakthrough approaches for solar power wrote: ... The Met Office says it has probably been the sunniest April on record and the solar power industry reported its highest ever production of electricity (9.68GW) in the UK at 12:30 on Monday 20 April... Lots of sun = hottest on record. Not a solution. |

Lots of sun = hottest on record. Not a solution. The quoted 9.68GW example was just used as a lead-in to the main part of the story... Photovoltaic solar power (pvsolar) is now a significant part of the power generation mix. Over the last week, we've had daily peaks of pvsolar providing 30% to 20% of the mains power generation for the UK. That's a lot of not burning coal or gas. Note that the rest of the story is the continued improvement in solar power that is cleanly pushing out the polluting dirty old fossils. In a parallel thread, electrical storage technology is also advancing but still has a way to go to catch up to present day needs... All a work in progress. The question is whether that progress is progressing quickly enough... Can the world come out cleaner from the Coronavirus pandemic? Commenting here for the UK: Coronavirus: UK warned to avoid climate change crisis wrote: The UK must avoid lurching from the coronavirus crisis into a deeper climate crisis, the government’s advisers have warned. Here's hoping the politics can be pushed to go less polluting! I'm putting this here because I don't think it justifies a separate thread. Gas stoves making indoor air up to five times dirtier than outdoor air, report finds Gas stoves are making people sick, contributing pollution that makes indoor air up to two to five times dirtier than outdoor air, according to a new report. |

A solution but Grenfell fears prevent timber boom “With encouragement from the Government, we could triple the amount of carbon locked into buildings – one of the simplest steps we can take to help meet the UK’s climate goals.â€Not worry, Cummings will give his "expert" advice on that! |

This shines as a very good change of use for that area: Biggest UK solar plant approved wrote: The go-ahead has been given to the UK’s biggest solar farm, stretching 900 acres on the north Kent coast... A good move that is far better than continuing to subsidise the farmer to not farm his land! Renewables surpass coal in US energy generation for first time in 130 years Solar, wind and other renewable sources have toppled coal in energy generation in the United States for the first time in over 130 years, with the coronavirus pandemic accelerating a decline in coal that has profound implications for the climate crisis. |

Let us pray that the increased use of renewable energy continuous unabated. Only the economics will win and they are. |

Aussie scientists are at it again. Australian scientists may have achieved a decades-long quest to find a plant-based alternative to petroleum-based engine oils, one that can be recycled, reused and breaks down in the environment. Agronomist David Hudson, a 40-year veteran of Australia's cropping industry, has been overseeing the safflower field trials and believes the oil offers unique benefits when it comes to sustainability. And again as usual royalties will go back to CSIRO to invest in further important research to benefit all. Cheers. |

This is steadily coming: Fertility rate: 'Jaw-dropping' global crash in children being born Personally, I'm skeptical about the overly optimistic/pessimistic slope that has been projected for the immediate future, but regardless we should be able to take advantage of our 'better ways' of living. The bigger problems are political and social to balance the inevitable population migrations that are to come, soon... We really do need better leaders and better politics, worldwide! This is steadily coming: That's where I believe we differ in that I consider the greatest positive impetus is from the positive effects of better education and better (food, social, health, physical, political) 'security' for ALL... Consequently, a fall in birth rate is just one of many positive consequences... Perhaps our improved tech, medicine, and possibly a reduction in physical wars, are all helping. This is steadily coming: Ask yourself how better education is helping people deal with Covid-19. Are they yet smart enough to wear a face covering and social distance? Are they still greedily chasing more profit? The issue is one of math. Reductions are always going to be at best linear. Population growth until this forecast has been exponential. No matter how large a linear reduction is, exponential growth will always overtake it. |
