But some companies are working on a radical redesign, placing motors in the wheels themselves.

That has a big problem, in creasing the unsprung weight is not a good thing for the ride or handeling.

Just in case you missed it.
BBC - Climate change: ‘Clear and unequivocal’ emergency, say scientists
WaPo - More than 11,000 scientists from around the world declare a ‘climate emergency’
Or choose your own media channel Google

Thanks for those.

A key quote from the BBC article is:

The study, based on 40 years of data on a range of measures, says governments are failing to address the crisis.

Without deep and lasting changes, the world is facing "untold human suffering" the study says.

So... How do we kick the politics into positively clearing our crisis?

The biggest splash we have at the moment is the publicity for Extinction Rebellion.

Beyond words and Marketing crap, we need immediate urgent genuine positive action... Now... How?

Some good new power generation tech to come... But what of our measures for a non-polluting stop-gap?

Nuclear fusion is 'a question of when, not if'

... With the price of wind and solar continuing to drop, experts say these existing renewables might offer a more economical and timely method of tackling climate change and generating energy than an unproven technology like fusion...

... While governments are wrestling with ITER, many are also driving ahead with their own national plans. China, India, Russia and the US among others are working on developing commercial reactors.

As well as the UK government putting cash in, the European Investment Bank is pumping hundreds of millions of euros into an Italian programme to produce fusion energy by 2050.

But perhaps the major excitement comes from private companies. They are usually smaller, nimbler, and they develop by making mistakes and learning from them quickly.

There are now dozens of them around the world, raising funds and pushing forward...

... "When ITER works, and I say when, not if, it will be a step change for fusion and you will see massive investment come into the field." ...

Two very small steps but something that can have an immediate and large result:

Climate change: British Airways reviews 'fuel-tankering' over climate concerns

British Airways has launched a review into a money-saving practice which increases its greenhouse gas emissions.

It follows a BBC investigation exposing "fuel tankering" by airlines - in which planes are filled with extra fuel, usually to avoid paying higher prices for refuelling at destination airports. The industry-wide practice could mean extra annual emissions equivalent to those of a large European town.

BA now says that using tankering to cut costs "may be the wrong thing to do"...

... The practice [just] on European routes could result in additional annual greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to that produced by a town of 100,000 people...

Climate change: Speed limits for ships can have 'massive' benefits

Cutting the speed of ships has huge benefits for humans, nature and the climate, according to a new report.

A 20% reduction would cut greenhouse gases but also curb pollutants that damage human health such as black carbon and nitrogen oxides. This speed limit would cut underwater noise by 66% and reduce the chances of whale collisions by 78%.

UN negotiators will meet in London this week to consider proposals to curb maritime speeds...

... Shipping generates roughly 3% of the global total of warming gases...

All the sooner the better!

Only the one conscientious voice?

Geologist blasts society's links with oil firms

... Prof Bill McGuire is furious at the links between major fossil fuel companies and the Geological Society.

After more than 40 years as a member, he's resigned from the society – saying it's madness to take cash from firms causing a climate emergency.

The society said geologists were playing a vital role in the transition to the zero carbon economy. But Prof McGuire told BBC News: "Geologists know more than anyone how suddenly an apparently stable climate can dramatically shift, with massive consequences.

"The society shouldn't be accepting sponsorship from these firms and cosying up to them. It's madness."...

Any further voices to make a positive change for our planet and us all?

Another positive note:

Coldplay to pause touring until concerts are 'environmentally beneficial'

Coldplay have put plans to tour their new album on hold, due to concerns over the environmental impact of concerts.

"We're not touring this album," frontman Chris Martin told BBC News.

"We're taking time over the next year or two, to work out how our tour can not only be sustainable [but] how can it be actively beneficial."

"All of us have to work out the best way of doing our job," he continued, saying the band wanted their future tours to "have a positive impact".

Coldplay's new album Everyday Life is released on Friday and, instead of spending months on the road, they are playing two gigs in Jordan, which will be broadcast, free, to a global audience on YouTube...

Good news all round on that one. Way to go!

All by the blind forces of economics regardless of our only one planet:

Coal: Is this the beginning of the end?

The fuel that powered the industrial revolution may be in decline at last. This year looks set to see the largest fall in electricity production from coal on record...

... projected to drop [over the year] by 3% - which is a fall of 300 terawatt hours...

... "It is clear that the economics of coal production no longer make sense in many parts of the world where it is simply cheaper to generate electricity from natural gas and renewables,"...

Here's hoping...

Climate change: Critical year for climate change starts in Madrid

A critical 12 months in the battle against rising temperatures begins in Madrid this week, as UN delegates gather for key talks. The 25th Conference of the Parties, or COP, will see negotiators from almost 200 countries in attendance.

Ahead of the meeting the UN secretary general has warned that the world is at the point of no return. António Guterres said the global response to date has been "utterly inadequate". ...

... "We simply have to stop digging and drilling and take advantage of the vast possibilities offered by renewable energy and nature-based solutions,"...

Really real meaningful action to be agreed and actioned?

Or yet more unbelievable insanity, hot air and procrastination and greedy brinkmanship politics?

Meanwhile, another technological step towards a little something better:

Solid state battery breakthrough could double the density of lithium-ion cells

... this could be a way to double the energy density of lithium batteries, which, in commercial settings, are currently peaking at around 250 Wh/kg (in Tesla's Model 3 battery pack). Getting that up toward 500 Wh/kg would allow massively extended ranges, or smaller, cheaper and vastly lighter battery packs. It's not the 10X jump everyone seems to believe is coming down the pipeline, but it would be very significant.

The Deakin team says it has only used existing commercial polymers in the new process, meaning that industrial production should proceed with "little difficulty."...

It's just a great shame that our governments here just want to keep throwing $'s at building roads to take more vehicles instead of investing those $'s into creating a new industry here taking in all the advances in solar energy and storage systems that we've developed over the last few years.

We have the knowledge, we have the resources and we have the ability, but sadly what we don't have is the infrastructure to support it. South Australia would be the perfect and logical spot to develop this project as that is where all the natural resources for it are close at hand.

Sadly our federal conservative government really doesn't want to believe in climate change. :-(

Cheers.

Staying in your part of the world:

Air New Zealand trials edible coffee cups to combat waste

New Zealand's national airline says it is trialling edible coffee cups in a bid to reduce the amount of waste on board its planes.

The cups, by local company Twiice, are made from vanilla-flavoured biscotti - and are apparently "leak-proof". Air New Zealand, which serves more than eight million cups of coffee a year, said it wanted to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills...

... In the UK, some 2.5 billion coffee cups are estimated to be thrown away each year and only 0.25% of them are recycled.

Air New Zealand said the trial of edible cups followed a recent switch to compostable cups made of paper and corn, used in all of its aircraft and lounges.

But some social media users said the airline needed to change more than coffee cups if it wanted to help the environment...

One good small step and an interesting start. There's a long way to go yet...

... One good small step and an interesting start. There's a long way to go yet...

And for another small positive step:

Seychelles: The island nation with a novel way to tackle climate change

... "You know at my age I've seen the fish size decrease dramatically," the fisherman reminisces. He's on board his boat with his young grandson in tow.

"If as fishermen, we do not take responsibility for our fish stocks, who's going to do it? If we don't start somewhere then in the future we're going to be very hard pushed to find fish to feed our children."

Mr Green has been fishing his local bay for decades - but not any more. He's set up a project with his fellow fishermen to voluntarily stop fishing here for six months of the year, hoping that this will allow fish stocks to replenish...

... In the first deal of its kind, the East African nation swapped 5% of its national debt for a cash injection to fight the effects of climate change on the ocean.

In return, it promised to protect 30% of its national waters, which is an area twice the size of the UK - by the end of next year...

That is all the more needed and more of that needed when compared to how we are killing off our oceans...

Interestingly and against my prejudices of political greed, this summary has come out that 3 of our 4 main political parties have gone positively green for their election manifestos:

Friends of the Earth: General Election 2019 manifestos: final scores

... We've combed through the party manifestos (and any additional pledges they've made during the campaign) to see how they score on tackling the climate and ecological emergency. These are the results...

... Earlier in 2019 UK Parliament declared a climate emergency, but despite adopting a new target to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions, action to cut emissions has stalled and our transport emissions are rising...

... Labour, Lib Dems and Greens all score highly, but with the Labour Party given a slightly higher mark overall. The Conservative Party scored poorly and its manifesto was judged to be missing significant commitments in numerous areas, inadequate policies in others, with actively damaging policies in transport...

Interesting times... Which party will gain power to save our part of our only one planet?

(And oh how Putin will laugh?... But Putin is for another political thread...)

I don't agree. Russia is very concerned about the climate change. Why should Putin laugh? Laughing that northern Russia above the Arctic Circle that already has suffered from high temperatures that are melting the permafrost giving a LOT of methane into our atmosphere?
Some more exemples happening right now.
https://siberiantimes.com/science/casestudy/features/russian-birch-trees-are-climbing-mountains-due-to-climate-change/
https://siberiantimes.com/other/others/features/northern-reindeer-that-roamed-taymyr-peninsula-are-at-the-brink-of-extinction/

It seems to me that the problem lies more to politicians in countries below the Arctic Circle that doesn't understand that this a problem.

Meanwhile, we take small jumps to something less polluting:

'World's first' fully-electric commercial flight takes off

An all-electric powered seaplane has taken flight in Vancouver, Canada, in what the operators describe as a "world first" for the aviation industry.

The short test flight by Harbour Air and magniX involved a six-passenger aircraft fitted with an electric motor.

The companies said it was a first step to building the "world's first all-electric commercial fleet"...
