Millions of young people gather today and for a week around the world to participate in what is believed to be the world's largest climate strike. In New York alone, up to 1.1 million students have received permission from the school to participate in the climate march with Greta Thunberg. SVT News reports from the climate strikes all day.

Greta Thunberg was to speak before the US Congress on Wednesday. But instead, she chose to talk for less than a minute.
"I don't want you to listen to me, I want you to listen to the researchers," Thunberg said.Of the young people invited to speak before the congress, Greta Thunberg was first out. But she immediately explained that she had not prepared any speech.
Instead, she wanted to pay attention to leadership meetings on the UN Climate Panel's report on what happens at 1.5 degree warming, from October 2018.
"This report is my testimony," said Thunberg.
"Take real action"
Thunberg also said she wants congressional leadership meetings to unite behind the research in the report.
"Then I want you to take real action," she said.
Thunberg was later asked by one of the congressional leaders why they should listen to the research, to which she replied that she "did not see a reason not to listen."
These are not political opinions. It's not my opinions, it's science, Tunberg said.

Very good and so simple even the politicians cannot fail to hear.

Perhaps it really does need a well spoken young woman to wake up the all-too-old politicians?

The BBC reports:

Greta Thunberg to US politicians: 'Sorry, you're not trying hard enough'

... "I know you are trying, but just not hard enough. Sorry," said the climate activist, who's inspired young people across the world to protest against the impact of global warming.

She told the Senate climate task force in Washington DC to "save your praise". "Don't invite us here to just tell us how inspiring we are without actually doing anything about it," she said.

The 16-year-old was one of several young activists from around the world invited to address the task force during two days of action and speeches...

... Instead of submitting a personal statement, as is usual ahead of a hearing, she sent Congress a major report on global warming along with eight sentences of her own.

"I am submitting this report as my testimony because I don't want you to listen to me," she said. "I want you to listen to the scientists. And I want you to unite behind the science. And then I want you to take action."...

Very good and succinct.

To what effect?

One small step from more campaigning children:

Burger King ditches free toys and will 'melt' old ones

Burger King UK will no longer give away plastic toys with children's meals, amid pressure to reduce plastic waste.

The fast food restaurant chain is also encouraging customers to bring in old promotional plastic toys, which it says it plans to melt to make other items.

The move comes after two Hampshire children petitioned the fast food giant and its rival McDonald's to stop giving away free plastic toys.

McDonald's said its customers would be able to choose between a toy and fruit...

Every positive little bit helps,

Happening around the world, now:

Climate strike: Protests held across UK

Protests are taking place across the UK, with pupils leaving schools and workers downing tools as part of a global "climate strike" day.

Rallies are taking place in cities including Glasgow, Manchester and London, urging "climate justice" and "an end to the age of fossil fuels"...

Millions attend global climate strike

A global climate strike is under way, with millions of people protesting for "an end to the age of fossil fuels and climate justice for everyone". The event was sparked by teenage campaigner Greta Thunberg, who is attending the New York protest, where 1.1m children have been allowed to miss school to join the march.

Here are pictures of marches across the world...

Climate change action: We can't all be Greta, but your choices have a ripple effect

... But let's be honest, you're no Greta Thunberg. Even if your choices do ripple out into the world and affect a few other people, your decision to eat a little less meat and turn down the thermostat a notch isn't the clarion call that is about to rally the world to the carbon cutting cause, is it?

So, why should individuals take action?...

We all have our part to play, for good or for bad.

Can you be for the good?

Another small positive step but is this enough, soon enough?

Saudi Arabia to open up to foreign tourists with new visas

Saudi Arabia will open its doors to international tourists for the first time as part of a broader push to cut its economic dependence on oil...

Saudi Arabia is also hoping to secure foreign investment in the tourism industry. It wants tourism to rise from 3% to 10% of gross domestic product by 2030...

... And will they be leaving the rest of the oil to remain in the ground, unsold and unburnt?...

The world's largest offshore wind farm is nearly complete. It can power 1 million homes

London (CNN Business)The world's largest offshore wind farm is taking shape off the east coast of Britain, a landmark project that demonstrates one way to combat climate change at scale.

Located 120 kilometers (75 miles) off England's Yorkshire coast, Hornsea One will produce enough energy to supply 1 million UK homes with clean electricity when it is completed in 2020.

The project spans an area that's bigger than the Maldives or Malta, and is located farther out to see [sic] than any other wind farm. It consists of 174 seven-megawatt wind turbines that are each 100 meters tall. The blades have a circumference [sic] of 75 meters, and cover an area bigger than the London Eye observation wheel as they turn.

Just a single rotation of one of the turbines can power the average home for an entire day, according to Stefan Hoonings, senior project manager at Orsted (DOGEF), the Danish energy company that built the farm.

They're back!

Extinction Rebellion: Police order activists to move or face arrest

... Extinction Rebellion activists are protesting in cities around the world, including Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam and Sydney, and are calling for urgent action on global climate and wildlife emergencies.

Protesters say they are occupying 11 sites in central London and people have travelled from across the UK to take part in the demonstrations...

But really, what is it going to take to get the politics and industry to wake up to taking immediate positive urgent action?

I'm sticking this here because the invention of Lithium-ion batteries, is probably the best solution for storing electrical energy discovered in recent times and making it alternative fuel for transportation. Lithium-ion batteries take chemistry Nobel

Three scientists have been awarded the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the development of lithium-ion batteries.

John B Goodenough, M Stanley Whittingham and Akira Yoshino share the prize for their work on these rechargeable devices, which are used for portable electronics.

At the age of 96, Prof Goodenough is the oldest person to win the award.

The laureates will share the prize money of nine million kronor (£738,000).

Another step to go clean:

Snowy 2.0: Australia's divisive plan for a vast underground 'battery'

Far beneath a national park in one of the coldest parts of Australia is where the government wants to build a hugely ambitious project: a power station capable of generating 10% of the nation's energy.

It is part of a bold - and expensive - hydro electricity scheme in the Kosciuszko National Park in south-east New South Wales...

... When there is cheap, excess electricity in the grid and demand is low, usually at night, water from the lower reservoir, Talbingo, is pumped up to its lofty cousin Tantangara that sits on a high, open plateau. When demand for energy rises, the water is released, and is sent tumbling down the main waterway tunnel.

Electricity is generated in a powerhouse buried 800m below the surface by turbines, which are also used as pumps to heave water back up from the lower reservoir to Tantangara...

... "It is essentially an extremely large and extremely powerful battery. At full power output it would be roughly 10% of Australia's electricity production."...

... The engineers working on the project appear unfazed by the controversies and expect that Snowy 2.0 will be pumping out electricity by late 2024, or early the following year...

Good to go unobtrusively clean!

Martin

The best ever comment seen on the Internet since it came into being.
Peter Dearman from his garage in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire.
......has single handedly achieved more to help the environment than 1 million so called activists worldwide who have done nothing more than dressing up, waving placards around and swanning about in fancy yachts.
Another helpful solution?

Sounds great. It doesn't reduce the greenhouse effects since the system doesn't produce greenhouse gases.
But the need to produce energy at peak hours will decrease it that otherwise will have to be done from other sources.
Battery storage is a problem but if this will work it would solve another problem as well.
One attractive feature is that it uses existing simple technology developed for storing and compressing liquefied natural gas (LNG), so unlike battery storage it does not require mining for rare minerals.
Meaning cheaper that I think even Trump can approve:)

One small step in the right direction despite corrupt greedy politics pushing for dirty profits:

Is the future of fracking now in doubt?

The National Audit Office officially has no opinion on whether fracking should continue on these shores, but its findings resemble a collection of nails available to be driven into the coffin of a once trumpeted shale gas revolution...

... A technology that had changed the US energy industry and geopolitics with it could provide a bonanza of benefits to the UK...

... The NAO report is a hammer blow to those aspirations.

It found no evidence that prices would be lowered, uncertainty as to whether it could viably produce gas in meaningful quantities, no plan for clean-up if a fracking firm were to go bust, serial breaches of agreed limits on earth tremors, strains on local authorities in fracking areas, and plummeting public support...

Here's hoping good clean sense prevails to save ourselves from ourselves...

Two positives in the news:

Greta Thunberg: New beetle named after climate activist

A newly discovered species of beetle has been named after young climate activist Greta Thunberg.

Nelloptodes gretae bears little resemblance to its namesake - it is less than 1mm long, and has no wings or eyes. The insect does, however, have two long pigtail-like antennae.

Scientist Dr Michael Darby said he chose the name because he was "immensely impressed" by the Swedish teenager's environmental campaigning...

... Dr Max Barclay, the museum's senior curator in charge of beetles, said the name was apt because "it is likely that undiscovered species are being lost all the time, before scientists have even named them, because of biodiversity loss". "So it is appropriate to name one of the newest discoveries after someone who has worked so hard to champion the natural world and protect vulnerable species,"...

Wheels of fortune? A new age for electric motors

... improvements in motor technology are set to have a profound effect on the performance of electric vehicles in the coming years...

However, Nelloptodes gretae is not entirely new. The species was found in Kenya as early as the 1960s and was then donated to the museum where it was named part of a larger collection. The beetle was then "discovered" again by Dr. Michael Darby who studied the collection.
“I'm really a big fan of Greta. She is a good advocate for saving the planet and she is fantastic at doing so, which is why I thought it was a good opportunity to acknowledge it, ”he says in a statement
