Trees 'most effective solution' for warming
The authors say that this is the most effective climate change solution available to the world right now...

Great idea to restore forests. Why haven't anybody come up with that idea before?
The scientists from ETH-Zurich in Switzerland used a method called photo-interpretation to examine a global dataset of observations covering 78,000 forests.
A map showing only the potential for restoring forests and excluding desert, agricultural and urban areas
https://www.crowtherlab.com/maps-2/
Actually many countries are restoring forests already and have done that for decades.
Looking at Sweden for example so according to the scientists from ETH-Zurich map we have plenty of room of new trees.
That's nonsense. There are already new plants growing there in restored forests. Probably not detected with the so called "photo-interpretation":)
Im' quite certain it's the same in the countries mentioned by the research team.
Like Russia (151m hectares), US (103m), Canada (78m), Australia (58m), Brazil (50m) and China (40m).
Maybe not Brazil and China...

No. It's not enough to restore forests. More forests are needed.

Good comment thanks.

All a very good idea that is good for the planet and ourselves...

Except for the practicality of...

"This far, humans have enhanced forest cover on a large scale only by shrinking their population size (Russia), increasing productivity of industrial agriculture (the West) or by direct order of an autocratic government (China). None of these activities look remotely feasible or sustainable at global scale."

Obviously Prof Martin Lukac from the University of Reading haven't been to Siberia or the northern part of Russia in Europe. LOL:)
And there is no need to shrink the population to enhance forest cover in a country.
Not in Sweden, Finland and Estonia either despite about 70% of our land are covered by forests.
In the more southern Europe it's very different.
However there is room for many more trees. So what's stopping you to plant more trees?

Good to see that positive pressure is still being applied:

Extinction Rebellion protesters block roads in UK cities

Environmental campaigners are blocking some roads across the UK in protest against "inaction" on climate change.

Extinction Rebellion are using five boats to stop traffic in Cardiff, Glasgow, Bristol, Leeds, and London.

The group, which is calling on the government to declare a climate emergency, said it was beginning a five-day "summer uprising"...

... "Now we're out of time and we can see climate breakdown all around us. Enough's enough: it's time to act now."

Extinction Rebellion says the UK must act immediately to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025...

Here's hoping for a usefully prompt positive response!

Will this really work? Or is this something too easy to be corruptly bypassed??

India air pollution: Will Gujarat's 'cap and trade' programme work?

Air pollution contributed to the deaths of at least 1.2 million Indians in 2017 - but a unique pilot scheme to combat air pollution in the western state of Gujarat could prove to be a model for the rest of the country...

... "Particulate air pollution is shortening lives in India, so if the pilot is successful there is a terrific opportunity for a win-win by scaling up emissions trading in order to reduce industries' compliance costs and to improve air quality which would ultimately [improve] people's health,"...

That looks to be one small part to curb particulate pollution. Will that go further to reduce the greenhouse gases pollution also?...

I don't think it's possible to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025. Or 2050 for that matter.
Extinction Rebellion think so but how many will change their lifestyles to meet the goal?
Not even the Extinction Rebellions themself...

Global thermonuclear war. Might reduce the human infestation enough to get to net zero.

Actually there was some "scientist" that came up with the "brilliant" idea to use the global nuclear stock of thermonuclear weapons to stop the global warming. Perhaps not such good idea:)

Another small technical step to remove the unnecessary greenhouse gasses pollution from our present day infrastructure:

Just add water: Efficient Energy’s HFC-free chillers arrive in the UK

The EU goes to war against refrigerants – so the German upstart designed a system that uses [plain simple] water

... The eChiller, developed by German startup Efficient Energy, is built on a somewhat ridiculous premise: instead of fluorinated gases like R-134a – which have a high global warming potential (GWP) ... water is circulated in a closed-loop system driven by a compressor, and the company claims it can do the job as well as traditional refrigeration agents...

That's a good multi-way win with removing the gas pollution, at source, all the way through the lifetime maintenance, and at whatever time later when the equipment is scrapped.

Why oh why are we being so slow to get clean and smart?

Amazing what people can do:

This is what happened earlier this year:

Global climate strike: students take to the streets – in pictures

Inspired by Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, protesters turn out in their thousands...

And the story continues:

Young people have led the climate strikes. Now we need adults to join us too

We can’t stave off global heating by ourselves. Together, on 20 September, we can unleash mass resistance...

... We don’t feel like we have a choice: it’s been years of talking, countless negotiations, empty deals on climate change and fossil fuel companies being given free rides...

... So this is our invitation. Starting on Friday 20 September we will kickstart a week of climate action with a worldwide strike for the climate. We’re asking adults to step up alongside us. There are many different plans under way in different parts of the world...

What are YOU doing this September 2019?

GLOBAL Climate Strike

This September, millions of us will walk out of our workplaces and homes to join young climate strikers on the streets and demand an end to the age of fossil fuels.

Our house is on fire — let’s act like it. We demand climate justice for everyone.

One has to admit that climate change is an issue, but it sure brings out the "crazies".
Solution or just plain selfishness?

Reducing the population or at least reducing the population growth to something more sedate is one of the solutions...

The big questions are how best to do that without going science fiction dystopian extreme...

There are very good examples for how better education and a better society/culture lead to much smaller (healthier) families.

Or there is also the present ongoing capitalist extreme of modern day corporate slavery of long work hours that leave the workforce incapable of starting or raising a family!

There has to be a good way.

A big "if" is whether there is enough cooperation and motivation to do something useful soon enough.

A coincidental positive move...

The UK now consumes as much energy as 50 years ago — with an economy three times larger

... The feat is more impressive given that the UK economy grew more than three times larger from 1965 to today, implying that the amount of energy required to produce each pound of economic output has fallen precipitously...

... When a lump of coal or a liter of gasoline is burned, much of it is lost as heat and only fraction of the energy is used productively. Renewable energy generation from wind, solar, and hydro features much lower losses from generation to consumption.

The country has also adopted high standards for energy efficiency...

Useful enough and soon enough and with enough political will to push further positivity?

Denmark’s former minister for the environment, Ida Auken, has a deal that might interest Trump.

Here's a very good solution that cannot be done with the old fossils:

World's Largest EV Never Has to be Recharged [from the grid]

A quarry in Biel, Switzerland, is operating the world's largest electric vehicle, a 110-ton dump truck, to haul lime and marl off the side of a mountain to a cement factory. Perhaps best of all, it consumes no energy doing it.

How is that possible, you ask?

The dump truck, at 45 tons, ascends the 13-percent grade and takes on 65 tons of ore...

All very good and positive... Until that is you get to the cement making bit...

But hey-ho, one step at a time?...

Yes. Utilizing gravity is a very good way to save energy. No CO2 emissions and no cost!
The same could be done with every vehicle utilizing the energy from when braking to slowing down in daily traffic.
It require though that the vehicles are powered with electricity and batteries to store energy between the moments.
But now it's getting more important to also do these little small steps.

Greta Thunberg was to speak before the US Congress on Wednesday. But instead, she chose to talk for less than a minute.
"I don't want you to listen to me, I want you to listen to the researchers," Thunberg said.Of the young people invited to speak before the congress, Greta Thunberg was first out. But she immediately explained that she had not prepared any speech.
Instead, she wanted to pay attention to leadership meetings on the UN Climate Panel's report on what happens at 1.5 degree warming, from October 2018.
"This report is my testimony," said Thunberg.
"Take real action"
Thunberg also said she wants congressional leadership meetings to unite behind the research in the report.
"Then I want you to take real action," she said.
Thunberg was later asked by one of the congressional leaders why they should listen to the research, to which she replied that she "did not see a reason not to listen."
These are not political opinions. It's not my opinions, it's science, Tunberg said.
