Troubling indeed and a bad surprise!

At those rates, we are no longer talking of "geologic" timescales of thousands of years...

This is happening now and the consequences are being felt now and the new consequences from what is seen in that report show that we have the new consequences adding up to big changes in the coming immediate years.

One thousand years? Nope. We are now talking mere years and months.


Indeed the new description really is that of a "Climate Emergency".

With their sled in tow, a pack of dogs trudge towards a distant mountain range in north-west Greenland.

The stunning picture may seem typical enough of the Danish territory. What's beneath their feet - a shallow pool of crystal-blue water - is anything but.

Last week, however, temperatures soared well above normal levels in Greenland, causing about half of its ice sheet surface to experience melting.

And the sea ice around the territory is, of course, also feeling this heat...

Special note: Ice and snow reflect the sun's heat. Water instead absorbs nearly all that heat...

A high of 17.3 deg C (63 degrees Fahrenheit) in that area is scary!

Amazon fires: Seven countries sign forest protection pact

Seven South American countries have agreed measures to protect the Amazon river basin, amid global concern over massive fires in the world's largest tropical forest. Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru and Suriname signed a pact, setting up a disaster response network and satellite monitoring.

At a summit in Colombia, they also agreed to work on reforestation.

More than 80,000 fires have broken out in the Amazon rainforest this year.

"This meeting will live on as a co-ordination mechanism for the presidents that share this treasure - the Amazon," said Colombian Presiden Iván Duque, who hosted the summit in the city of Leticia. Meanwhile, Peruvian President Martín Vizcarra said: "Goodwill alone is not enough anymore."

The seven nations also agreed to put more efforts into education and increase the role of indigenous communities...

... Meanwhile, Brazil's leading meat export industry group and agricultural businesses have joined an environmental campaign calling for an end to deforestation in public lands in the Amazon and demanding government action.

Several international retailers have said they are suspending purchases of Brazilian leather because of the links between cattle ranching and the fires devastating parts of the Amazon rainforest.
