Deny this? Climate change: Oceans running out of oxygen as temperatures rise Climate change and nutrient pollution are driving the oxygen from our oceans, and threatening many species of fish... ... The threat to oceans from nutrient run-off of chemicals such as nitrogen and phosphorus from farms and industry has long been known to impact the levels of oxygen in the sea waters and still remains the primary factor, especially closer to coasts. However, in recent years the threat from climate change has increased. As more carbon dioxide is released enhancing the greenhouse effect, much of the heat is absorbed by the oceans. In turn, this warmer water can hold less oxygen. The scientists estimate that between 1960 and 2010, the amount of the gas dissolved in the oceans declined by 2%. That may not seem like much as it is a global average, but in some tropical locations the loss can range up to 40%. Even small changes can impact marine life in a significant way. So waters with less oxygen favour species such as jellyfish, but not so good for bigger, fast-swimming species like tuna... If our oceans die, we die. Simple. The company's equipment has been linked to several blazes including the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in state history... And for East Africa, the extreme weather is extreme with localized extreme rain or completely no rain: Uganda floods: At least 16 people dead... ... Rescuers have been recovering the bodies of victims swept to their deaths by the flash floods in the western Bundibugyo area, the aid group said. Homes have been washed away and a number of roads blocked or destroyed. Large parts of east Africa have suffered floods and landslides in recent weeks. Hundreds have died and millions have been displaced... ... Meanwhile, in Somalia, the authorities are trying to assess the damage caused by tropical storm Pawan, which brought wind and torrential rain to part of the northern coast on Saturday... And at the other extreme to come, no water: Climate change: [Nearly TWO] billion people rely on natural 'water towers' In a unique study, scientists have assessed and ranked the importance of Earth's great "water towers". These are the 78 mountainous regions that are able to generate and then store vast quantities of water. They deliver it in a controlled way to major populations living downstream. The Dutch-led team finds Asia's Indus basin - fed by the Himalayan, Karakoram, Hindu-Kush, and Ladakh ranges - to be the most important storage unit on the planet... ... but the most obvious threat is climate change. A warming world will disrupt precipitation patterns and denude glaciers of their storage capacity... ... And one of the defining aspects of the towers is the way they are able to maintain essential water supplies to populations even in drought years through the steady melt of high-elevation ice in summer months... ... "What we recommend in our study is that we should really recognise mountains as global assets of the Earth system, and that means mountain ranges should be at the top of political agendas, and dedicated policies should be developed,"... Climate change: Major emitters accused of blocking progress at UN talks Delegates from developing countries have reacted angrily to what they see as attempts to block progress at the COP25 meeting in Madrid. One negotiator told the BBC that the talks had failed to find agreement on a range of issues because of the blocking actions of some large emitters. Carlos Fuller from Belize said that Brazil, Saudi Arabia, India and China were "part of the problem"... ... hopes of an ambitious declaration at COP25 have smacked straight into the realities of politics and entrenched positions... ... Climate change: Amazon oil boom under fire at UN talks A report presented at COP25 says that plans are in place for a huge expansion of oil drilling in the upper Amazon. The analysis says that Ecuador and Peru are set to sanction oil extraction across an area of forest the size of Italy... ... Right now this is a pristine area, with few roads. The indigenous people have title to these lands and in the area several tribes are living in voluntary isolation. Campaigners fear that if the oil blocks are sold it will see new roads built, which will lead to illegal logging, deforestation and poor outcomes for the residents of the region... ... "All those countries are here making declarations about cutting emissions, Ecuador and Peru are making declarations about protecting the Amazon but what we are seeing is a whole different plan to expand extraction... ... "The world needs to understand that the Amazon goes beyond Brazil, and that us, the indigenous from Peru and Ecuador, can work hand in hand with governments and philanthropists in the creation of a new economic model for the Amazon Forest," said Lizardo Cauper, from Peru. Reflecting the scale of violence that many indigenous people from the Amazon region live under, a delegation of more than 20 Brazilian leaders held a protest at the COP against the murder of two people on Saturday. Greta Thunberg accuses world leaders of 'creative PR' at climate summit Greta Thunberg has called upon world leaders to stop using "clever accounting and creative PR" to avoid real action on climate change... ... She accused world leaders of making constant attempts to find loopholes to avoid making substantial changes. Looks like Greta has at least some of the polluting leaders on the run: Greta Thunberg changes Twitter bio after Trump dig Climate activist Greta Thunberg has changed her Twitter bio to mock US President Donald Trump's outrage at her winning Time Person of the Year 2019... ... This is not the first time she has changed her Twitter bio to reflect Mr Trump and other leaders' criticism of her. On Tuesday Ms Thunberg changed her bio to "pirralha" - the Portuguese word for brat - after Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro criticised her highlighting the plight of Brazil's indigenous people... ... In October she changed the bio to "a kind but poorly informed teenager". This was exactly how Russian President Vladimir Putin had described her... How many more countries are there where she can no longer visit for having 'upset' the local 'despot'? More seriously, how do we do away with such despot vandals or even transform them into saving our planet?? Australia heatwave: Next week could see hottest day on record Australia could experience its hottest day on record next week as a severe heatwave in the country's west is set to make its way east, forecasters say. Temperatures are likely to exceed 40C in many areas from Wednesday... ... The current record of 50.7C was set on 2 January 1960 in the outback town of Oodnadatta in South Australia. Fire weather warnings have been issued for parts of Western Australia and Queensland. In Perth, in Western Australia, temperatures are forecast to remain high on the weekend, reaching 40C on Saturday and 41C on Sunday. Next week, the extreme heat is likely to continue in parts of Western Australia and also affect much of South Australia, where Adelaide should see highs of 40C on Tuesday and Wednesday, 41C on Thursday and 42C on Friday... ... When the Madrid climate summit now goes into long overdue, vulnerable countries together with environmental organizations warn of a total failure. With only hours left, the negotiations are still completely locked, and it all risks ending with an agreement that allows cheating with emissions trading and lowered ambitions. "The politicians here are f***ing up, and people all over the world have to get up to save the planet," says Mohamed Adow of Power Shift Africa. Brazil, Australia, the USA and Japan are identified as the stop blocks. "These are the ones the chairman is now listening to. Climate change: Longest talks end with compromise deal The longest United Nations climate talks on record have finally ended in Madrid with a compromise deal... All countries will need to put new climate pledges on the table by the time of the next major conference in Glasgow next year. Divisions over other questions - including carbon markets - were delayed until the next gathering... All parties will need to address the gap between what the science says is necessary to avoid dangerous climate change... Supported by the European Union and small island states, the push for higher ambition was opposed by a range of countries including the US, Brazil, India and China. However a compromise was agreed with the richer nations having to show that they have kept their promises on climate change in the years before 2020... ... Many of those in attendance were unhappy with the overall package, feeling it did not reflect the urgency of the science... However, negotiators will be satisfied to have kept the process alive after these difficult and complex talks in Madrid... Greta Thunberg apologises for 'put leaders against the wall' comment Greta Thunberg has apologised for saying world leaders should be "put against the wall" in a speech. The teenage climate activist made the comment while addressing a Fridays For Future protest in Turin, Italy. In English the phrase is associated with execution by firing squad, but Ms Thunberg said it had a different meaning in her native language Swedish. "That's what happens when you improvise speeches in a second language,"... ... She said she feared the summit alone would not lead to adequate climate action, and that activists should continue to take world leaders to task. "World leaders are still trying to run away from their responsibilities, but we have to make sure they cannot do that," she said. "We will make sure that we put them against the wall, and they will have to do their job to protect our futures."... ... "That's Swenglish: 'att ställa nÃ¥gon mot väggen' (to put someone against the wall) means to hold someone accountable." She continued: "Of course I apologise if anyone misunderstood this. A summary of the COP25 is given: Climate change: Five things we've learned from Madrid talks ... Delegates were highly critical of the fact that when it came to the key text about ambition, the Chileans presented the lowest common denominator language first, resulting in a huge number of objections from countries eager to see more ambition on carbon cuts. Experienced COP watchers said they should have started with high ambition and negotiated down to a compromise... ... There was a yawning gap between the demands of those outside the process and the actions of those within. This disconnect was the difference between the urgency underlined by the latest science, the demands for more ambitious climate targets from school strikers around the world, and the torturous, convoluted nature of the talks... ... If countries can't be persuaded to move away from ... self-protective positions, Glasgow will suffer the same fate as the ill-fated Copenhagen COP in 2009... ... The heat is ON: Australia heatwave: All-time temperature record broken again A state of emergency has been declared in New South Wales, Australia, amid fears a record-breaking heatwave will exacerbate the state's bushfire crisis. The nation endured its hottest-ever day on Tuesday, but that record was smashed again on Wednesday - which saw an average maximum of 41.9C (107.4F). Tuesday's 40.9C had eclipsed the previous record of 40.3C, set in 2013... ... And that could have profound effects on the way the economy is funded... ... It's perhaps not intuitive to see how climate change affects financial assets. VW hit with record fine in Australia over emissions scandal Volkswagen (VW) has been slapped with a record fine by Australia's consumer watchdog to settle lawsuits over the carmaker's global emissions scandal. The A$125m ($86m; £66m) penalty is the highest ordered by a court for breaches of Australian consumer law. VW has been hit with a flurry of legal action since 2015, when it emerged the firm had been cheating emissions tests. Australian regulators have also launched proceedings over VW's consumer loans... Yet, does that deter for the profits made? Does the fine adequately pay for the damage done to the environment and everyone and the consequences? Australia fires: Travel warnings issued over 'catastrophic' conditions Catastrophic fire warnings are in place across the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW), where firefighters are tackling more than 100 blazes. Authorities have urged Christmas travellers to delay their journeys as conditions threaten to intensify the bushfire crisis... ... A combination of temperatures above 40C, low humidity and strong winds have worsened the struggle for the almost 10,000 emergency personnel mobilised to deal with the bushfires in NSW. "We are in a period of unbelievable drought and some areas haven't seen rain for more than 12 months"... ... Although climate change is not the direct cause of bushfires, scientists have long warned that a hotter, drier climate would contribute to Australia's fires becoming more frequent and more intense. Whilst here in the UK we are being flooded out: Flood and weather warnings in place across England More than 100 flood warnings are in place across England after days of heavy rain, and more downpours expected. The warnings are in place across southern and eastern England, the Midlands and Yorkshire. A severe weather warning of more heavy rain is in place across southern England until noon on Sunday. Motorists starting out for the Christmas getaway are being advised to check their routes in advance... And the plants in my garden are totally confused.
