Last Friday, the town of Gallargues-le-Monteux in southern France had a very high temperature of 45.9 degrees Celsius (!), which is the highest temperature ever recorded in the country. Also elsewhere in Europe, heat records were struck. But does the extreme heat depend on the ongoing climate change, or is it occasional weather events?
- The study shows very clearly that the human impact on the climate has increased the likelihood of heat waves similar to what we have seen in Europe over the past few weeks.

Is this what the Global Warming deniers will try to blame as a "Biblical Deluge"?

Heavy rains in Japan force more than a million residents to evacuate

More than one million people across the Japanese island of Kyushu have been ordered to evacuate, amid warnings of landslides and floods brought on by heavy rain...

... 1,000mm (39in) of rain has fallen on Kyushu island since Friday, and Japan's Meteorological Agency forecasts the rains will continue into next week.

A further 350mm of rain is expected in the southern part of the island by midday on Thursday, with some areas predicted to get more than 80mm of rain every hour...

All a game of how much pollution we can yet put into our only one atmosphere before the hand of god (atmospheric physics) washes us all away?...

Meanwhile, we continue to corruptly suffer:

'Football pitch' of Amazon forest lost every minute

An area of Amazon rainforest roughly the size of a football pitch is now being cleared every single minute ...

The rate of losses has accelerated as Brazil's new right-wing president favours development over conservation...

Where for just one of the consequences felt by others, we have:

Climate change: Heatwave made 'at least' five times more likely by warming

Last week's record breaking heatwave across much of Europe was made "at least five times" more likely to happen by climate change...

... rising temperatures "super-charged" the event, making it more likely to happen than through natural variability alone. Heatwaves in June are now about 4C hotter than they used to be, the researchers said. Globally, the average temperature for June was the highest on record...

... They found that, over France, the probability of having a heatwave had increased by at least a factor of five. However, the researchers say that this influence could be much higher still, by a factor of 100 or more...

... "The new record of 45.9C set in France last Friday is one more step to confirmation that, without urgent climate mitigation actions, temperatures in France could potentially rise to about 50°C or more in France by the end of the century."...

So... 50 deg C... Welcome to our own Man-made Hell?

Martin

The whimsical political denial continues?!...

Climate change: UK government 'like Dad's Army'

The UK has been dealt a "brutal reality check" on its climate change ambitions, environmentalists have said. The government's official climate change advisers warn ministers are failing to cut emissions fast enough, and adapt to rising temperatures.

Committee on Climate Change chair John Gummer likened them to the hapless characters in 1970s comedy Dad's Army...

... "There's an increasing sense of frustration that the government knows what it has to do - but it's just not doing it."...

Attenborough: Climate risks Africa turmoil

The naturalist and broadcaster Sir David Attenborough says that climate change will make parts of Africa uninhabitable.

Speaking to the Commons Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy committee, Sir David said we can't be radical enough when tackling the problem. Tough, unpopular actions from the government would be needed, he said...

... He criticised those governments where voices sceptical about climate science were still clearly heard. And he hoped the electorate in the US and Australia particularly would remember this come election time.

Sir David told MPs that everyone would have to play their part in the battle against climate change... The public mood was changing, he said. The young, he said, gave him hope that the world would change before irreversible climate change destroyed our world.

Despite the stark nature of his message, Sir David's passion and status seemed to charm the MPs on the committee. The chair described it as the "most inspiring session" that they've held.

If the politicians are not stirred to immediate positive action by such a big name figure of our planet, what hope do we have for any useful political action?...

Can the denialists deny these increasing real-world consequences?

Greece storm: Six tourists die in Halkidiki

Six tourists have been killed and at least 30 other people injured in a violent storm that swept across a region of northern Greece.

Gale-force winds, heavy rain and hailstorms lashed Halkidiki, near the city of Thessaloniki, late on Wednesday...

... head of civil protection in northern Greece, described it as an "unprecedented phenomenon".

The storm followed a spell of very hot weather in Greece with temperatures soaring to 37C (98F) over the past two days...

... This is the latest in a series of other extreme weather events across Europe in recent weeks. A heat-wave brought record June temperatures to several countries. Golf ball-sized hail has been reported in parts of the south of France and Italy and there were forest fires in Sicily on Wednesday, including in popular beach resort areas.

Climate change: How hot cities could be in 2050

London could feel as hot as Barcelona by 2050, with Edinburgh's climate more like Paris, Leeds feeling like Melbourne and Cardiff like Montevideo.

That's from a study looking at how a 2C temperature increase could change the world's 520 major cities.

And that's not as good as it might sound. More than a fifth, including Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, will experience conditions big cities haven't seen before...

... Scientists hope pairing up cities will help people visualise the impact climate change could have within their own lifetimes. "History has repeatedly shown us that data and facts alone do not inspire humans to change their beliefs or act,"...

How do we 'inspire' politics and business to change their planet destructive corrupt greedy ways to something even a little more positive, better, sustainable?

I think many politicians and businesses already are really considering that global warming is a problem. Many even take actions already.
Yes. People that are not greedy:) Realising that there are even business opportunities to follow.
However... It also up to us as individuals to really follow advices and regulations from them.
Then there are of course politicians, businesses and individuals who doesn't care at all...

Is this a continued "don't care" for the environment and the consequences be damned?

The coal mine that ate Hambacher forest

More than a third of Germany's electricity is still produced by burning coal - mostly dirty brown lignite - and environmental activists are fighting to change this...

... "We're fighting capitalism and the big companies who are ruling the world and destroying it for profit," says Jim...

... They're here because the Hambi is threatened with total destruction. There's not much of it left now. The forest sits atop one of the largest coalfields in Europe and since mining started in 1978 the trees have been gradually stripped away... To add insult to injury, the coal that is extracted here is brown coal, also known as lignite, which emits particularly high levels of carbon dioxide...

... Brown coal

Germany is the biggest source of lignite in the world, followed by China and Turkey - in 2016, the EU was responsible for 37.5% of global production
The Belchatow mine in Poland, at 12km long and 200m deep, is the world's biggest
Germany's Niederaussem plant, supplied by the Hambacher mine, ranks second in Europe for emissions of mercury
Burning coal damages health by producing particulates, ground-level ozone and nitrogen dioxide
Brown coal is worse than ordinary coal - for health and the climate - because more must be burned to produce the same amount of energy
Contamination from Germany and Poland stretches across Europe, including to the UK, depending on the wind direction...

The pictures just have to be seen to be believed, all just for two power stations.

There is no place for that with our present tech and knowledge and understanding...

I have worked for Swedish Vattenfall for many years. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vattenfall
A company who has very high ambitions to brand themself as a Green/Clean/Low CO2 emission company. https://youtu.be/AqA2Xlnf1eU
They, heavily invested starting in the 90's, in brown coal mining in Germany and the Czech Republic.
Well they stopped their investments later after years of protests.
Or did they stop? LOL:)
https://www.dn.se/nyheter/politik/delvis-sant-att-sveriges-salda-brunkolsgruvor-inte-langre-expanderar/

In case anyone doesn't know, using brown coal is the worst choice to produce energy if you are concerned to CO2 emissions.

And another corrupt game of ignoring the worldwide picture and all consequences be damned:

Used cooking oil imports may fuel deforestation

Imports of a "green fuel" source may be inadvertently increasing deforestation and the demand for new palm oil, a study says.

Experts say there has been a recent boom in the amount of used cooking oil imported into the UK from Asia. This waste oil is the basis for biodiesel, which produces far less CO2 than fossil fuels in cars.

But this report is concerned that the used oil is [instead] being replaced across Asia with palm oil from deforested areas...

... The report's authors are concerned that since it is more profitable to sell Asian UCO to Europe for fuel rather than feed it to animals, it is likely being replaced by virgin palm oil which is cheaper to buy...

All a game of who can cook up their own numbers?

The heat waves are becoming more common nowadays...
A new heat wave has swept across Europe and in several countries temperatures have reached record levels. In Paris, the thermometer shows over 40.6 degrees - which is the hottest ever in the French capital. Authorities, however, warn that degrees may rise further.

"Only" about 30 degrees here...

Yep...

Here in the UK we have trains canceled or reduced to silly slow speeds due to the tracks getting too hot and buckling in the heat... We're also all too close to the tarmac melting on some of our roads. Especially so for the roads suffering heavy traffic. Very expensive to repair...

Some work places in the city here have closed early for the day due to inadequate or overloaded aircon...

No doubt there will be many other knock-on effects, some good but mostly disruptive or bad.

That's another cr*p story from Breitbart who doesn't know anything about science obviously.
According to Denmark's TV2, it has melted between ten and eleven billion tonnes of ice a day in recent days. That's more than twice as much as normal!
Extreme weather events, which have become more common in recent years, are the first indications of climate change.
And the warming is about twice as much in the Arctic then the rest of the globe.
That's a fact!
Huskies in Greenland with their paws in melt water on an ice covered lake.
The picture was taken June 13 this year before the heatwave last week!

We continue to cook our planet into uninhabitabilty:

Heat-trapping gases broke records in 2018, climate crisis report finds

... The gases heating the planet in 2018 were higher than humans have ever recorded, according to an authoritative new report from the American Meteorological Society and the US government.

Greenhouse gas levels topped 60 years of modern measurements and 800,000 years of ice core data, the study found...

... There were 14 weather and climate events in the US that each caused over $1bn in damage...

And is this the best solution we have?!

And so the local food shortages begin:

Cauliflower shortages as extreme weather kills crops

Britain is experiencing a cauliflower shortage after extreme weather killed off much of this year's crops.

Heavy rainfall in June destroyed crops in Lincolnshire, and alternative European supplies wilted in last month's heatwave.

Cauliflower prices have soared and some farmers have suffered financial losses after the destruction of their crops...
