They aren’t any wider than the dual fan cards. Just shorter

OK, then let's call the heatsink 'taller' instead of wider. It is bigger (taller) than the heat sinks on the twin fan cards. Again, you get close to the same amount of surface area. I never saw the EVGA 1060 6GB ever break out of the 60's. Normally in the 63-65° C. range under BOINC load.

[Edit]
The Zotac Mini 1070 Ti uses a larger than normal heat sink that is taller by 1/2" than the stock height of the reference coolers or twin fan coolers. It is running 58-62° C. Heat sink is 125mm tall.

I don't think they are taller either.

I have both single and dual fan models. and i'm 99% sure they are the same pcb height. i've used both cards in 3U sized cases which didn't allow more than the standard height cards to be used and had similar clearance from both. I'll post some comparison pics later tonight.

actually you can just see here:
EVGA 06G-P4-6163 SC Single fan
Dimentions:
Height: 4.38 in - 111.15 mm
Length: 6.8 in - 172.72 mm
Width: Dual Slot

EVGA 06G-P4-6267 SSC Dual fan
Dimensions
Height: 4.376in - 111.15mm
Length: 10.5in - 266.7mm
Width: Dual Slot

identical height, identical width, only different length

specific to zotac yeah. I had some zotac 1060 minis at one time too, but they seemed more or less normal height also. but my zotac mini 1080 is the same as you're describing now. but all zotacs are a a tad longer still than the EVGA short cards in question.

The Zotac Mini at 8" long are just short enough not to intrude on the fan header and I/O header pins on the bottom of the motherboard when used in the bottom PCIe slot. Even the short PCB reference 970 and 1070 cards are too long to fit in that position.

I'm going to get the short MSI card, the seller of the long Gigabyte one hasn't responded. The card is going into my server mobo that sits on an open shelf (no case). The GPU will be exposed to plenty of room temperature air. I have huge heat sinks with 120mm fans to keep the Xeons cool.

I always re-apply heat sink compound to stuff I buy used and to all my computers periodically. The compound hardens with age and loses heat conductivity. Laptops are worse since the constant flexing and temperature changes can make the seal break down even faster. On computers I've reapplied the compound to it's not unusual to see at least a 10 F decrease in temperature in normal use.

TBar: To run my MacBook Pro 2010 without the GPU I tried downloading and installing AVX2_CPUr3605. It has an i7 and runs High Sierra. I fixed permissions manually and then by reinstalling BOINC. Both times I got this error:
Your app_info.xml file doesn't have a usable version of SETI@home v8.
What did I do wrong?

MacBook Pro 2010.... Would that be the one that is now showing 65 Errors?
If it is, the CPU doesn't have AVX2. Probably why all the Errors. According to CPU world the Intel Core i7-620M only has SSE42. You need the SSE41 App.
The SSE41 App is in the CUDA_Special-ElCap-Yosemite package. For now you need to download that package and use the CPU App MBv8_8.22r3711_sse41_x86_64-apple-darwin & app_info.xml from there. Just delete the other sections from the app_info so it looks as though;

 <app_info>
    <app>
       <name>setiathome_v8</name>
    </app>
      <file_info>
         <name>MBv8_8.22r3711_sse41_x86_64-apple-darwin</name>
         <executable/>
      </file_info>
    <app_version>
       <app_name>setiathome_v8</app_name>
       <platform>x86_64-apple-darwin</platform>
       <version_num>805</version_num>
        <file_ref>
           <file_name>MBv8_8.22r3711_sse41_x86_64-apple-darwin</file_name>
           <main_program/>
        </file_ref>
    </app_version>
 </app_info>
That CPU App will work on most of your other machines, but you might check them anyway.
Since the Stock CPU App is Now at v8.05 x86_64, make sure the app_info has <version_num>805</version_num> in it or you will trash your existing tasks.
The reason you are getting the 'doesn't have a usable version' message is you've trashed so many tasks the Server will not send anymore tasks to Anonymous platform.
You'll have to wait until you're out of the penalty box, probably an hour or so, maybe more.

Once again, many thanks for your expertise. My three old MacBook Pros are now happily running SETI without their GPUs. The 2010 is the i7, the other two are 2008 Core 2 Duos, one an old style 17" the other a unibody 15". I'll let them run for a few days to see if they're worth keeping the power on.

After 4+ days of running the GTX 1060 the results are great. My dual-Xeon 2.93 GHz server mobo without a GPU was averaging 6644 credits/day across all projects. Now it's averaging 94,327!

I have to run Mojave on one Mac Pro, but not on the other. I'll look into getting rid of my two Radeon RX 560s, getting an NVIDIA, and downgrading to Sierra or High Sierra. Is the 1060 a good recommendation for Mac Pros? Budget is a big concern for me.

Pascal Support, (10x0 Cards), for Sierra DID NOT exist until 10.12.4... You'll be better off with High Sierra, (just Updated to 10.13.6 - (17G7024), NVIDIA Web Driver now 387.10.10.10.40.128, CUDA Driver now 418.163), make sure to use a MacVidCards' GPU that has been Flashed with Mac Boot ROM to get the Mac Boot Screen. I don't think the 1060 has been used by MacVidCards, at least it's NOT in their List of Cards being sold. MacVidCards DOES have a "Low Power" GTX-1070 8GB Card with ONE 8-Pin Connector - Pre-Flashed. Unfortunately, getting a Flashed Card COSTS $$$. The GTX-1070, (which I have for my Hackintosh), was $555 + $14 for Shipping. NOW it's $615 + $14 Shipping.

TBar will tell you that it's IMPORTANT to have a Pre-Flashed Card in order to get the Boot Screen, and I agree. (This essentially is the EFI Boot on the Card.) IF you choose NOT to care about having the Mac Boot Screen, then YES, you CAN get an off the shelf EVGA GTX-1060 Card, (paying far less $$$), BUT the order of events are, Power on the Mac Pro, get Black Screen from Power On through the Boot Process, then, (IF you have a Password on your User Account), the Login Screen will be the first visible screen. (IF NO Password, then your Desktop will be the first visible screen.)

El Capitan 10.11.6 was the LAST MacOS to allow Maxwell Cards, (750TI through 980Ti), to boot with Boot Screen WITHOUT being Flashed.

Feel free to look through the Product Line at MacVidCards.com to see what's available to you.

Just thought I'd pass this info on to you prior to you purchasing a Card and then finding out the hard way that you'll NOT have the Boot Screen AND THEN think something is wrong. ymmv.

TL

[EDIT:]

Also, BEFORE installing ANY 10x0 Card into the Mac Pro, Download and Install the appropriate NVIDIA Driver for your MacOS. IF you are Installing vanilla 10.13.6 - (17G6030), you'll need NVIDIA Web Driver 387.10.10.10.40.127, (possibly even farther back to 387.10.10.10.40.122), THEN power down the Mac Pro, and THEN install the NVIDIA Card of choice, THEN power back on the System.

You CANNOT just Install the Card and then "hope" to Install the Video Driver. You most likely would end up in an endless reboot situation. The Driver MUST be Installed FIRST.

MacVidCards' GTX-1070 8GB Card - "Low Power", 8-Pin.

Price just dropped recently on the MacVidCards' GTX-1070 8GB Card. Now down to $565 +$14 Shipping in the Continental US.

The $565 Card has DP x3, DVI x1, HDMI x1. MacVidCards currently has two of these available for sale. The other two models are out of stock.

MacVidCards' NVIDIA Web Driver List. (Detailed to specify which Driver for a specific MacOS.)

Here is a List of specified NVIDIA Web Drivers for each MacOS Version Release.

NVIDIA CUDA Driver List.

Grab the Latest CUDA Driver: 418.163

TL

[EDIT:]

IF you DL the plain Vanilla 10.13.6 - (17G65) <<--- Original 10.13.6 Version, and Install it... You'll need NVIDIA Driver 387.10.10.10.40.105, then after installing the Driver you'll shut down the System and Install the Card. Then Power Up the System.

From there, you can perform the latest Security Update, 10.13.6 2019-003, (17G7024), and upon successful Update and Reboot the NVIDIA Driver Utility will prompt you to Update to the latest Web Driver, 387.10.10.10.40.128. Upon successful Install, you'll Reboot again.

NOW, once all these Updates are done, DL and Install CUDA Driver 418.163. NO Reboot is required for Installation of CUDA Driver.

TimeLord04:

Thanks for the wealth of info but those prices are way too high for my budget. For my single-CPU Mac Pro I may downgrade to El Capitan since I won't use it for anything but BOINC.

Both my Mac Pros running Mojave run headless, so I'm not overly concerned about not seeing the boot process. On the rare occasion that something really goes amok, I put the original GT120 video back in just to watch the boot.

Common misconception: Mojave will boot without a Metal-capable card. You just can't install it without one.

All my High Sierra and Mojave Macs lose their Internet connectivity far too often. It's not my network, all my other computers are fine. Right now I'm downgraded my 2010 MacBook Pro 17" from High Sierra to El Capitan.

I use my dual-CPU Mac Pro as a SpamSieve Mail Drone. It reads mail 24/7 and filters out the spam (I do my own filtering for my personal domain). I do this so I don't have to wade through 200 spams/day on my iPhone. I'm looking into doing this in VMware on my main iMac. But even the virtual Mojave has network (and hanging) issues...

Sam

Your Internet Issues, (IF on the Mac Pro), with High Sierra and Mojave "COULD" be the Original Apple WiFi Card as it is NOT "AC" Capable... (I didn't actually think that High Sierra had this issue, BUT I know from InsanelyMac and elsewhere that Mojave DISABLES ALL prior WiFi Cards NOT "AC & Bluetooth 4" Capable.) I Upgraded my Mac Pro's stock WiFi Card with one I got from e-Bay. The new Card is a Keuren, (name of the guy who made it), WiFi-AC & Bluetooth 4 Combo Card. (Had to unplug the stock Bluetooth Card AND plug in a LOOOONG Antenna Cable from the Keuren Card to the stock Bluetooth Pinout Point.

On the Hackintosh, I solved this by installing a Fenvi FV-T919 PCI-e x1 WiFi-AC & Bluetooth 4 Card into the System. Both Systems have NO issues with WiFi connectivity under High Sierra. These two WiFi-AC Upgrades also make my Systems Mojave Compatible. ALL I need now is for Apple and NVIDIA to "play nice together" and release the Mojave NVIDIA Web Drivers. THEN I will move to Mojave.

IF I CANNOT get to Mojave, the recent news from InsanelyMac is that MacOS 10.15.x IS going to have a way to Sign Drivers and THEN NVIDIA WILL release Drivers for 10.15.x - "Marzipan". So, at that point, the Hackintosh WILL move up to 10.15.x, and unfortunately the Mac Pro will have to stay on High Sierra until "End of Life". (Hopefully I can get at least 4 more years use out of the Mac Pro 5,1 with Dual Xeon 2.4GHz CPUs.)

TL

[EDIT:]

AND, as to the prices of the MacVidCards GPUs... IF you get a "matching" off-the-shelf GTX-1070 PC Version Card, you CAN send that in to MacVidCards to be "Flashed" for about $105 at my last check of their Flashing Services. (IF this is of interest to you.) BUT buying a card DIRECTLY from MacVidCards, you'll get a 60-Day Warranty from them. I don't think they provide that Warranty on cards the User sends in to be Flashed.

By "matching" I mean that the number and type of Ports on the PC Version Card MUST match one of the Versions that MacVidCards sells directly. So, IF you can locate on e-Bay, (or elsewhere), a GTX-1070 8GB Card with DP x3, DVI x1, and HDMI x1 Ports then you can send that Card in to MacVidCards to be Flashed. At that point, you'll have a Mac EFI Capable Card that WILL give you Boot Screen.

TL

[EDIT 2:]

JUST found this CHEAP Founder's Edition GTX-1070 8GB Card with DP x3, DVI x1, HDMI x1 Ports on e-Bay. $200

Founder's Edition GTX-1070 8GB Card with DP x3, DVI x1, and HDMI x1 Ports.

This is an EXCELLENT candidate to have Flashed by MacVidCards. 😀 MacVidCards raised their Flashing Service Price for this card. To Flash this one is $150 PLUS Shipping Charges.

TL

[EDIT 3:]

Mac Pro 4,1 and 5,1 WiFi-AC & Bluetooth 4 Upgrade Kit with Antenna Cable for Bluetooth.

Found this on e-Bay for $114 and some change... This will most likely solve your Mac Pro WiFi Internet Connectivity Issues.

You may want to go with Sierra. Sierra will run both the older zi3v App which runs without any trouble, and the newer 0.98b1 App which still has the problem with missing Pulses after first boot. With El Capitan you can only run the Older CUDA 8.0 App as you can't run CUDA 9.x in El Capitan. To run CUDA 10.x you need High Sierra, but, for now there isn't any advantage to running CUDA 10.x. Perhaps later, depending on what it takes to run Turing, it might better with something newer. But for now, Sierra is the best for SETI, and trouble free with the zi3v CUDA App.

Many thanks, I do Mac & IT support for a living (semi-retired, mainly the tired part...) and haven't heard about this particular issue. FWIW: Mojave did not disable my dual-CPU Mac Pro's original WiFi or Bluetooth. Both my Mac Pros are hooked up with Ethernet as the primary connection. Out of habit I connected my dual-CPU's original WiFi Card to use 5GHz N on my AirPort Extreme tower/ac. My single-CPU has neither WiFi nor Bluetooth cards. The dual has lost networking far more often than the single. I just disabled WiFi and Bluetooth on the dual, let's see if that cures it.

What I can spend will depend on what I can sell my two new Radeon RX 560s for. They were only about $130 each.

2018 Article on Mojave cutting old WiFi Card and Bluetooth Support.

Hope this article helps. 😀 (Prices quoted in the article are DRASTICALLY outdated. Due to demand and low supply, the AC Cards tend to run on average close to $100 for something decent.)

My Keuren WiFi-AC & Bluetooth 4 Card for the Mac Pro 5,1 cost me $111 + $25 in International Shipping from Denmark. The new model Card I Linked prior is from China. These AC Cards typically come up in MacOS as stating they are "Airport Extreme" Cards. Even on the Hackintosh, the Fenvi Card comes up as "Airport Extreme".
