One thing technology cannot prevent is... a blabbermouth... ...you or I commit such an offence, & we'll be serving a lengthy custodial sentence. Senior government officials on the other hand, whose motto is "laws are for peasants" believe they're exempt from such "piddling matters". |

The wonderful world of free and open source software where you the user must be a computer scientist to know if a program is nefarious https://www.engadget.com/2019/04/26/google-bans-app-developer-do-global-play-store-ad-fraud/ Google is banning a major Android developer DO Global and removing its apps from the Google Play Store after it was discovered the company was committing ad fraud. Nearly half of the developer's more than 100 apps have already been removed from Google's app marketplace and it's expected the rest will disappear in the coming days, according to BuzzFeed. Apps published by DO Global, which is in part owned by massive Chinese tech firm Baidu, have racked up more than 600 million downloads in the Play Store. |

The wonderful world of free and open source software where you the user must be a computer scientist to know if a program is nefarious Are you able to provide the source code or a link to it for any one of these hundred apps. to demonstrate that they are, in fact, open source as you claim? I didn't think so either. |

Technology being put to good use. Only problem is though it highlights a big problem for the greatest nation on Earth. He enlisted Code For America, a non-profit organisation that works on creating Silicon Valley-esque solutions to problems within the many antiquated systems powering the US government.Technology at work |

Millions of eyeballs So... An Android web browser display exploit... Similar to as is done for some very annoying click-bait adverts and malware... For all browsers, the display area really should be a secured 'sandbox' whereby the displaying of pixels cannot disturb anything else other than the intelligence of the viewer... IT is what we make it... Martin See new freedom: Mageia Linux Take a look for yourself: Linux Format The Future is what We all make IT (GPLv3) |

All in the great Marketing economy of the USA: Ok Google, please ignore this free tax filing code so we can keep on s******g America The United States' tax-filing software industry actively prevents search engines from discovering their free-filing versions, it has been discovered, adding further criticism to an industry that drives Americans toward unnecessary paid-for products... Really only a 'game' of Market forces for the land of the free to be freely exploited?... IT is what we allow it to be... Millions of eyeballs You mean millions of eyeballs didn't figure that out? Or is it the pursuit of the almighty advertising dollar and new ways to foist content on unwilling eyeballs when web standards are written by those millions of eyeballs. |

Or is it the pursuit of the almighty advertising dollar and new ways to foist content on unwilling eyeballs when web standards are written by those millions of eyeballs. If you are meaning Google, then note that indeed Google is a very "commercial" entity that has very successfully built its success on the back of Free/Libre Open Source Software. Note that does not mean that all their dedicated software in their Android system is fully open or fully Free/Libre (it isn't). Nor does that say anything about the level of whatever interest there may or may not be to peer review the Google software... But also note that Google is very usefully pioneering automated checks to make ALL software better for anyone wishing to run such checks... That's a vast improvement on certain other vendors... IT is very much what we make it... Martin See new freedom: Mageia Linux Take a look for yourself: Linux Format The Future is what We all make IT (GPLv3) |

No Martin, not Google per say, but the people who write such standards as HTML5 - WC3 & WHATWG - which allows such exploits to exist no matter who makes the web browser. Yes it is better than Flash, but that isn't saying much. |

Yes it is better than Flash, but that isn't saying much. Good you've picked up that point. The exploit is as much some clever trickery that imitates the browser user-interface. That is always going to be a problem where we have things such as the address bar being hidden for the browser. The real fix is to rework the user interface so that there is no possible ambiguity... That does rather require dedicated screen space for that. IT is what we make it... That does rather require dedicated screen space for that. That takes space away from advertisers. Can W3C and WHATWG be convinced to not be the advertisers' bitch? (Look at who funds them!) |

Something too hot to handle in other threads?... YouTube: 10 things you can do with Linux that you can't do with Windows Linux holds significant advantage over Windows with few drawbacks... To be fair, that list gives some good points that are a big advantage for running servers. However, for home users, there is nothing in there that is a "killer must have" feature. However, are those good features enough to persuade home users over to Linux despite the fabulous Marketing that promotes Windows?... IT is what we make it... Rather than continue with your obsessive hatred of all things MS, shouldn't you be in regular contact with the Linux developers & doing your best to transform Linux into a viable alternative to MS instead of the "lowly" 1% of the market? |
