At least 207 killed, 450 hurt in eight church, hotel bombings in Sri Lanka
April 21 (UPI) -- Eight bomb blasts across Sri Lanka killed at least 207 people and injured 450 others Sunday morning in high-end hotels and churches, including during Easter services.

At least 27 foreigners, including Americans, died in the bombings in the south Asian island country in the Indian Ocean, including the capital Colombo as well as Kochchikade, Negombo, Batticaloa, Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia and Dematagoda. Other victims were British, Chinese, Dutch and Portuguese nationals, The New York Times reported.

"These are certainly acts of terror," Manisha Gunasekera, the high commissioner of Sri Lanka to Britain, told CNN. "This is an attack against the whole of Sri Lanka because Sri Lanka is [a] multi-ethnic, multi-religious and multi-cultural country and the whole country comes together in celebration of Easter Sunday."

No one so far has claimed responsibility for the terrorist attacks but seven people have been detained in connection with them, according to Ruwan Wijewardan, Sri Lanka's state minister for defense. He said the unnamed suicide bombers were believed to be part of a single group.

'International network' linked to bombings.
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-48012085
The local group National Thowheeth Jama’ath are apparently the group responsible but with help from international militants.
Strange that they attack christian churches in a country with only a small minority of christians.
And also international hotels where the guests seldom are churchgoers even if it's Easter holiday.

Defence minister Ruwan Wijewardene told parliament on Tuesday that "preliminary investigations" indicated the bombings were in retaliation for deadly attacks on mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, in March. He did not give any details.

In total, now 359 people have lost their lives in Sri Lanka.
The police have now identified eight of the suicide bombers. Most are well educated and come from economically strong families. Some of them have studied abroad.
A total of 60 people have now been arrested suspects for connections to the attack, and more arrests are to be expected.
Now the president calls on the country's chief police officer and defense secretary to resign, sources say Reuters.
The reason why President Sirisena kicks them is that, despite strong warning signs, the country's security service did not take any action to stop the terrorists.
Among other things, Indian security service should have provided the authorities with detailed information that terrorist acts were being prepared against, among other things, Christian churches, but no one acted. According to the President of the country's parliament, high-ranking officials deliberately let go of the information.

At least one person was killed in an attack on a five-star hotel in southwestern Pakistan, officials said.

An official told Reuters most guests had been evacuated from the hotel in Gwadar as of Saturday evening.

Gwadar is in the country’s poorest region, Balochistan, and has been targeted for heavy investment from China, according to BBC.

A separatist group called Balochistan Liberation Army claimed responsibility for the attack, news reports said.

The BLA has targeted Chinese workers in Pakistan multiple times, including during a brazen daylight attack on the Chinese consulate in Karachi that killed four people in November last year.

At the time, the BLA branded Beijing “an oppressor.”

A man has been arrested in Sweden on probable grounds for conspiracy to terrorist acts. The man should have tried to drive over people and into a crowd in Östersund on Wednesday, according to Aftonbladet. The man is also being investigated for links to terrorist convicted Rakhmat Akilov. He is also from Uzbekistan, according to Sveriges Radio Ekot.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The death toll from a late-night suicide bombing at a crowded wedding party in the Afghan capital rose to at least 63 on Sunday, including women and children, officials said. It was the deadliest attack in Kabul this year.

Another 182 civilians were wounded in the Saturday night explosion, government spokesman Feroz Bashari said. Interior Ministry spokesman Nusrat Rahimi confirmed the toll as some families began to bury the dead.
