And those who wish to add a High Speed Train between Europe and the America's?I'm sure Elon Musk is aiming for a hyperloop tube to do just that. Edit - I thought that was just a joke, but see what the Daily Mail thought of it: Forget the Hyperloop! Plan for vacuum tube travel between UK and the US unveiled - but is it just a pipe dream? |

Elon Musk must have seen Gene Roddenberry's pilot film for the failed Genesis II series in 1973, as did the Daily Mail. :-) |

Bit stale. :-) The Royal Navy confirmed the problem was identified during sea trials and said the aircraft carrier is scheduled for repair.Got that on video provided by the BBC in 2017/18.. At least the QE didn't have such a hilarious issue What is the main purpose of an Aircraft Carrier J.E.? |

......and then there's the Titanic.......a good stout product of Belfast.......Don't you know that White Star Line who built the Titanic was owned by the American banker John Pierpont Morgan but let British Joseph Bruce Ismay be the CEO of the company. White Star Line then built the Titanic in Belfast, Ireland. Sounds like outsourcing or business as usual to me and not socialism. |

Bit stale. :-) As the wag wrote in the QE article, problems always are found in 1st of Class warships. Also 'Bit stale https://navaltoday.com/2019/01/17/uss-gerald-r-ford-receives-first-functional-weapons-elevator/ USS Gerald R. Ford is the first Ford-class aircraft carrier and is the first new carrier design in over 40 years. Unlike Nimitz-class carrier elevators that utilize cables for movement, the Ford class elevators are commanded via electromagnetic, linear synchronous motors allowing for greater capacities and a faster movement of weapons. The Ford also has electromagnetic catapults and arrestors. It is still undergoing acceptance trials. "Sour Grapes make a bitter Whine." <(0)> |

Leaks, moomin, leaks.Yes, sometimes leaks happen. Still waiting for the trickle-down effect in the economy though... |

Stupidity knows no bounds. One close EMP burst, bye bye elevators & catapults. :-) Back to hydraulic lifts & steam catapults in the future? |

There is no such thing about "close" That's the funny thing about EMP and how it is generated .... less to do with distance more to do with angle of incidence. |

That's the funny thing about EMP and how it is generated .... less to do with distance more to do with angle of incidence.July 9 1962, 240 miles above Johnston Island in mid Pacific - "As it was, significant damage was done to both civilian and military electrical systems throughout the Hawaiian Islands, over 800 miles away from ground zero." In Hawaii, the effects were almost immediate: streetlights blew out, circuit breakers tripped, telephone service crashed, aircraft radios malfunctioned, burglar alarms sounded, and garage door openers mysteriously activated. All created by a 1.4 megaton warhead. |

Yep and the size of the warhead has only a passing influence (square root) on the damage. The dirtyness of the explosion and elevation above the atmosphere has more. |

If an enemy detonates a nuclear warhead generating a destructive EMP pulse against Soveriegn US Territory(which carriers are), the elevators won't matter as that enemy will be nothing but a radioactive memory 3 hours later......and human life will probably cease in the Universe shortly thereafter. It's called MAD. "Sour Grapes make a bitter Whine." <(0)> |
